Google, LG seeing more Nexus 4 demand than expected

Nexus 4 review lead

Who’d have thought that pricing a high-end smartphone like the Nexus 4 at $350 or less would lead to strong sales? Google and LG certainly appear to have been caught off-guard. LG’s UK mobile lead Andy Coughlin tells CNET that the pair estimated Nexus 4 shipments in the way you’d expect for any phone, but have been rocked by “huge demand” — in short, they didn’t realize that offering such a giant bargain would lead to sellouts within minutes. While we don’t have tangible shipping numbers, that the spending sprees happen over and over again suggests that LG is producing more than a handful of Nexus 4s as it tries to keep up. We suspect that many of you reading this just want to know when sales resume; sadly, Coughlin’s not telling.

The iPhone Is Literally Four Times as Powerful as the Curiosity Rover Last night NASA landed on Mars. An amazing feat! But guess what? The Curiosity rover’s on-board computer is a pretty low-power system. In fact, the iPhone 4S is four times more powerful. Check out the specs below.

Surprised? Don’t be. NASA knows what it’s doing. It has just enough to do everything it needs. And that includes 17 cameras. [@mikko]

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/09/iphone-top-selling-japan/

Think the iPhone is popular in the States? Well, the device is taking off in Asia as well. Based on a report from research firm IDC Japan, Apple snagged the largest share of mobile phone shipments in the country for the quarter at 26.6%, ending the market dominance of local manufacturers. Popularity of the iPhone 4S rose during the period from October to December and propelled the device maker past Fujitsu / Toshiba’s mark of 18.3% and third place Sharp, coming in at 15.7%. Sharp still owned the top spot for 2011, though, with 20.1% of total shipments while Apple finished the year third with 14.2%. In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.
Fallen out of love with sensor? Don’t worry, Variable Technologies is here to help. The company’s working to bring the world Node, a project aimed at helping smartphone users “explore the fun and power of sensors.” The “Swiss Army knife-sized” modular device communicates with the iPhone 4S and Android devices via Bluetooth. It has a built-in accelerometer, magnetometer and gyroscope and can detect physical motion and space, temperature and elevation, to name but a few. It also has a game control module and eight LEDs that can double as a camera flash, with carbon monoxide and radiation detection on the way. The Node will be compatible with Arduino devices and will have an open API, firmware and source code. There’s a month left to help Variable hit its lofty $50,000 goal. Click the source link for more info.

Android’s Marketshare Collapses For The First Time Ever

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-android-ios-2012-1

Android’s share of the the U.S. smartphone market collapsed for the first time ever in November and October as consumers bought up the iPhone 4S. Now that Apple sells the iPhone on Verizon, Sprint and AT&T, it actually closed the gap on Android.

The big question for Apple: Is this is a short term jolt driven by the iPhone 4S which came out in October, or is it a long term trend?

Android Can’t Even Keep Up With Apple’s Three-Year-Old iPhone Camera On Flickr (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/click-apples-iphone-4s-is-the-second-most-popular-camera-phone-on-flickr-2011-11

flickr camera log

The iPhone 4S is now the second-most popular camera phone on Flickr after coming out just more than a month ago.

The iPhone 4 is still the most popular camera phone on Flickr. It’s also the most popular camera overall. There’s only one Android-powered phone that even comes close to competing with Apple’s phones. Even the iPhone 3G, which is now three generations old, is still crushing it.

The iPhone 4S sports a better camera with improved sensor and a revamped lens.

Keep in mind Apple only has a few models of phones while there are dozens running Android.

iPhone 4S hits four million in sales after first weekend

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/17/iphone-4s-hits-four-million-in-sales-after-first-weekend/

How did you spend your weekend? If you’re Apple, the answer is simple, really: selling a whole lot of iPhones. Cupertino this morning announced that iPhone 4S sales have reached four million — quite an impressive number compared to what its predecessor was capable of, a fact no doubt helped by the addition of some carriers, like Verizon and Sprint here in the States. The handset is currently available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK, with plenty more countries coming by the end of the year. Press info can be found after the jump.

Apple sells 1.7 million iPhone 4s through Saturday, June 26

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/28/apple-sells-1-7-million-iphone-4s-through-satruday-june-26/

There you have it. 600,000 pre-orders turned into 1.7 million iPhone 4 sales through this Saturday — the Sunday transactions haven’t even been tallied up yet. One more reason for Steve and company to look smug. That eclipses the 3GS’ already phenomenal 1 million units sold over a weekend, and stands pretty much head and shoulders above any other launch the mobile world has yet seen.
