drag2share: The Most Popular Apps Right Now (FB, AAPL)

source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/businessinsider/~3/oXnoCPBVvwc/chart-of-the-day-facebooks-incredible-popularity-on-smartphones-2013-7

It’s not exactly news that Facebook is popular, but a new survey of smartphone and tablet users by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), shows just how popular it is.

CIRP asked users to list the three apps they use most frequently. This chart shows the percentage of respondents listing each app amongst their most frequently used.

As you can see, Facebook blows away the competition.

There are some surprises on this list. Swagbucks is one of the most popular, and we’ve never heard of it. It’s site that gives you digital currency for installing a toolbar and using the web. The digital currency can be used for real stuff like Target gift cards.

A non-surprise surprise on the list is Candy Crush Saga. This app just came out of nowhere to be massively popular. One of our writers describes her $127 a week addiction to the app here.

drag2share: Microsoft’s Big Problem In One Chart (MSFT, AAPL, GOOG)

source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-microsofts-big-problem-in-one-chart-2013-7

Microsoft’s stock was clobbered today, falling 11.4%.

The most obvious reason for the decline: The collapse of the PC industry has finally hit Microsoft’s earnings.

Windows operating income fell by over 50% on a year-over-year basis. It took a $900 million charge for inventory of its Surface RT tablet. Its CFO admitted that it’s going to take a while for tablet sales to offset the decline of the PC.

Few charts illustrate what’s happening to the PC market, and thus, what’s happening to Microsoft, better than this one from Horace Dediu, independent analyst/blogger at Asymco.

Microsoft’s monopoly over our computing is dead.

Combined iOS/Android unit sales are outpacing PC sales 2.6 to 1.

drag2share: Massive Tumblr Security Flaw Requires Everyone On iPhone, iPad To Change Their Password (YHOO, AAPL)

source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/businessinsider/~3/kXwy2-Qu-xU/tumblr-security-flaw-requires-password-change-2013-7

david karp

Tumblr has asked all users of its app on iPhone and iPad to change their password and download an update of the social blogging software in order to cure a security flaw. The news came in a very brief blog post by the company that did not explain the extent of the security breach.

Tumblr did say in a footnote that passwords could be “‘Sniffed’ in transit on certain versions of the app.”

The flaw was reportedly discovered by a reader of The Register, who had been asked to screen apps for his corporate employer. The unnamed employee tested popular apps on the company’s wifi network, and found that password logins were being transmitted in a plain-text, non-encrypted way — and therefore were entirely visible to anyone clever enough who wanted to see them.

Samsung’s Massive Marketing Budget (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-samsungs-massive-marketing-budget-2012-11

Another great chart from Horace Dediu at Asymco. He looks at the advertising budget of Apple, Samsung, HP, Dell, Microsoft, and Coke. Why include Coke? Because it’s a huge advertiser, and its “primary cost of sales is advertising.”

As you can see, Samsung is blowing all the companies away in advertising and marketing.

Not a bad price to pay, if it means you get to become the world’s biggest smartphone company. Certainly HTC wishes it had Samsung’s marketing budget.

Here’s A Disastrous Stat For Microsoft (MSFT, AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-a-disasterous-stat-for-microsoft-2012-11

Steve Ballmer

USA Today reports that software security firm Avast surveyed 140,000 of its users, and came up with this stat:

About one-third of Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP users who are ready to buy a new personal computer say they intend to switch to an Apple product.

Obviously that’s very bad news for Microsoft as it rolls out Windows 8/RT.

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber says its great news for Apple:

Historically, the single biggest problem Apple faced in the PC market is that most consumers never even considered buying an Apple computer. If this number of potential switchers is even close to true, Mac and iPad sales are going to continue to grow.

The Biggest Difference Between Apple And Amazon (AAPL, AMZN)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-apple-vs-amazon-2012-9

Now that Amazon is going all-in on tablets, and likely to release its own smartphone, the comparisons between it and Apple are going to pick up.

Below is a chart from Dan Frommer at ReadWriteWeb that shows the biggest difference between the two companies. Apple, as you can see, makes an insane amount of money each quarter, whereas Amazon does not.

This is because Apple sells very expensive hardware while Amazon is a retailer who operates on very thin margins. Jeff Bezos is okay with this arrangement. He says Amazon charges low prices because it wants to be in alignment with its customers, who want low prices.

Apple And Samsung Swallow All The Smartphone Industry’s Profits And Then Some (AAPL, RIMM, GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-value-share-for-mobile-companies-2012-8

Samsung and Apple have swallowed up all the profits in the smartphone business. According to data from Canaccord Genuity, last quarter those two companies had 108% of the industry’s profits.

Using Canaccord’s data we’ve made this chart. Note that it is annual data from 2007-2011, then quarterly data for the last two quarters. The ascent of Apple and Samsung, while everyone else crashes is astounding.

Android May Have Peaked In The U.S. — It Lost 4% Of Its Market Share Last Quarter (GOOG, AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/android-market-share-in-the-us-2012-7

screen

Google’s Android market share may have peaked in the U.S., according to a Strategy Analytics report via TechCrunch.

Last quarter Android’s U.S. smartphone share was 56.3% of all sales, down from 60.6% a year prior. Meanwhile, the iPhone’s share came in at 33.2%, up from 23.2% the year prior.

This is an impressive gain for Apple, especially considering the company sold fewer iPhones than expected.

When Apple releases the newly redesigned iPhone, we expect it to take even more share.

One Of The Most Amazing Things About The iPhone’s First Five Years (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-one-of-the-most-amazing-things-about-the-iphones-first-five-years-2012-6

The iPhone turns five this week. One of the most impressive things about the iPhone’s five year run is that the average selling price of the phone has remained just about the same around $600, notes Horace Dediu of Asymco. Meanwhile, Apple’s rivals pull in less than $400 per device.

Think about that for a second. Apple defined the modern smartphone market with the iPhone. It then faced an onslaught of competition from Google, Microsoft, Palm, and Research In Motion. Despite their various efforts to dethrone the iPhone, Apple has managed to stay on top. This is evident by the fact that since 2008 Apple has never had to slash its prices.

With all the competition, and pressure from carriers, if Apple was losing the smartphone battle, you’d expect it to cut the price of the phone. Instead, it’s been steady.
