Verizon smartphone revenue up in Q2 2013, half of all 7.5 million activations were iPhones (updated)

Verizon’s latest quarterly report reveals a carrier chugging along nicely, thank you very much. Total revenue (including wireless and wireline) is up slightly to $29.8 billion, while wireless service revenue on its own grew by 8.3 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Nearly a million (941,000) new retail postpaid customers joined the VZW brigade, some of whom may have been drawn to the carrier’s expanding LTE service, which is now available to 301 million Americans, as well as to new handsets like the Nokia Lumia 928 and possibly even the BlackBerry Q10 (or maybe not). In any case, those high-margin subscribers helped to increase profit by 14 percent — so long as you’re the kind of person who’s content to be guided by “non-GAAP consolidated adjusted earnings per share.” There’s also no sign of the pension-related issues that affected the company last quarter, which leaves this carrier high and dry, regardless of how smartphone saturation may be affecting others along the food chain.

Update: In its earnings call, Verizon added that 59 percent of traffic on its network is on 4G LTE, and 52 percent of its smartphone activations (around 3.8 million device activations) were iPhones.

Apple Is Winning The Mobile Enterprise

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-is-winning-the-mobile-enterprise-2012-7

Business Insider Intelligence a new research and analysis service focused on mobile computing and the Internet. The product is currently in beta. For more information, and to sign up for a free 30-day trial, click here.

Apple is in prime position to win the mobile enterprise. According Good Technology, a vendor of technology to help companies manage mobile devices, Apple accounted for over 70 percent of new device activations in the second quarter. Android made up most of the rest, although Windows Phone showed up for the first time with 1.2% share.

Good Technology is not a perfect barometer of enterprise adoption because it does not track Blackberry devices, which have their own device management technology, but it is a good proxy nonetheless.

A large part of Apple’s success stems from bring your own device (BYOD) programs. At the end of 2011, 72 percent of Good’s clients had formal BYOD programs, up from 60 percent at the beginning of the year. Apple’s mobile enterprise market share is also firmed up by the iPad, which is gaining traction in the enterprise and represents more than 90 percent of all enterprise tablet deployments.

AT&T reports ‘blow-out’ Q4, revenues up 3.6 percent, 7.6 million iPhones activated

att 1327582526 AT&T reports blow out Q4, revenues up 3.6 percent, 7.6 million iPhones activated

AT&T is all smiles again, as it announces a quarter in which it managed to sell 9.4 million smartphones. It nearly doubled handset sales from Q3 and managed — perhaps unsurprisingly — 7.6 million iPhone activations, with the majority being Apple’s latest flavor of phone. It looks like the loss of its exclusivity tag hasn’t hurt its sales, with Ma Bell quick to note that it sold far more iPhones than its Big Red rival. Total consolidated revenues were up $1.1 billion from last year, that’s a 3.6 percent increase and it’s up just over $1 billion from last quarter. However, due to the failed T-Mobile acquisition (and the subsequent pay-off) net income was a loss of $6.7 billion, with $4.2 billion of this going to its previously potential partner. Aside from bumper smartphone sales, AT&T’s attributed its revenue increases to a year-on-year increase in wireless subscriptions in all their forms — including wireless internet. An additional 208,000 AT&T U-verse TV subscribers has tipped the viewer count to 3.8 million. See AT&T’s own take on its results below.

The Android platform reaches just under half the mobile market at 47%, according to the latest numbers from comScore.

iOS is sitting pretty in second place at 28.7%, followed by BlackBerry at 16.6% and Windows Phone at 5.2%.

comScore’s numbers also reflect a growing population of smartphone users — for the 3-month period ending in November, 91.4 million people owned smartphones, up 8% from the previous 3-month period.
