Thirty-five percent follow brands or stores on social

Although mothers are known to be especially active on social networks, that does not mean they will necessarily endorse their favorite brands by following them on social media. A June 2013 survey of US mothers participating in the Allrecipes.com community found that just more than one-third of respondents followed brands or stores on social media, while 65% said they did not.

This still put mothers ahead of Allrecipes.com participants overall in terms of their receptivity to following brands on social. More than seven out of 10 total respondents said they did not do this.

But that doesn’t mean mothers aren’t inclined to share their preferences and recommendations at a reasonably high rate—it just may be on their own terms.

A July 2013 Burst Media survey of US mothers on the web found that across all age groups, well over half of respondents posted about products or services on social media. And about 70% of the youngest mothers surveyed—those between 18 and 34 years old—did so. Shopping and retail ecommerce sites were also popular places for sharing opinions on products or services.

The Allrecipes.com survey found that a major incentive among mothers who did follow brands and stores on social was to receive discounts or special offers. Seventy-one percent of those who followed a brand socially said they di! d so for the discounts, and 69% did so to receive special offers.

Similarly, Burst Media’s research found that 56.1% of mothers surveyed shared coupons or incentives on social, a significantly higher rate than followed brands on social media. Of these coupon-sharers, more than one-quarter posted about coupons at least somewhat frequently.

Mothers are on the web scouring for deals and discounts, and they want to share what they find with others. They might not be overwhelmingly inclined to passively endorse a brand or store on social media, but with the right incentive, they’re much more likely to spread the word around.

Smartphones and Tablets Account for Half of US Adults’ Time Online

Smartphones alone account for 50% of online time for the two above-mentioned groups. Interestingly, while smartphones only account for a relatively small 25% of online time for Americans aged 50 and older, tablets grab 16% share, the highest among the age groups.

The share of internet time represented by mobile devices differs greatly from one category to the next. For example, together they account for just 24% of time online with the automotive category and 32% of time spent with TV sites (an outsized 20% of which is on tablets). By contrast, two-thirds of social media time goes to smartphones and tablets, as does 82% of online gaming time and 92% of online radio time.

Of those, about 63% (122 million) use both a PC and a mobile device, while PC-only! users nu! mber 58 million (30% share) and mobile-only 14 million (7% share). Those figures are heavily influenced by older internet users. While 17-22% of internet users aged 18-49 are PC-only, that figure jumps to 48% of those aged 50 and older.

While only 17% of online women aged 25-49 are PC-only, a greater proportion of online males of that age are so-called “screen jumpers” (mobile and PC users), at 74% share. That’s because a significant 14% share of women aged 25-49 are mobile-only.

Young Women Are The Most Valuable Mobile Ad Demographic

Data is starting to trickle in and shape our understanding of the nascent mobile ad market. According to data from Flurry Analytics, 25- to 34-year-old females are the most valuable demographic for advertisers and publishers (as measured by the underlying click-through and conversion rates).

This is not surprising: Young people have adopted smartphones at a much higher rate than their parents. However, mobile CPMs will eventually even out as penetration picks up amongst older age groups. Furthermore, women should be more valuable because they historically have controlled household expenses and there is some evidence that they use smartphones more than men while shopping.

Finally, the eCPMs strike us as pretty high—even as smartphone usage has exploded, demand seems to have held up.

ComScore report finds drastic shift from web-based to mobile email among younger users in past year

ComScore released its annual US Digital Future in Focus report this week, offering a year-end wrap of many of the trends its tracked throughout the past year and a look towards the next. One of the more telling stats concerns email use among those in their teens and twenties. According to the report, web-based email use among 12-17 year olds dropped 31 percent in the past year, while use among those 18 to 24 saw an even bigger drop of 34 percent. Some of that can no doubt be attributed to Facebook and other email alternatives, but a big factor is the growth of email use on mobile devices; both of those age groups saw double-digit growth in that respect, with mobile email use jumping 32 percent among 18 to 24 year olds.

In terms of sheer growth in the past couple of years, though, there’s not much that matches the trajectory of tablets (obviously aided by one in particular). ComScore notes that that US tablet sales over the past two years have topped 40 million, a figure that it took smartphones as a category a full seven years to reach. Another area that saw some considerable growth in 2011 is digital downloads and subscriptions (including e-books), which jumped 26 percent compared to the previous year, leading all other areas of e-commerce.
