The Duracell Powermat and the Power Matters Alliance are charging forward in their quest to make wireless charging of smartphones all the more ubiquitous, today announcing the appointment of several notable companies to the PMA’s shareholder board: Google, AT&T, and Starbucks. Subsequently, said appointments will result in various initiatives involving the wireless charging standard — select Boston-area Starbucks will get PMA standard-based wireless charging spots, AT&T is selling PMA standard-based charging devices in “select markets,” and … uh … Google is just kinda throwing its support in. Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist (best job title ever?) Vint Cerf already serves as honorary member of the PMA’s board, so perhaps that’s more than enough.

Ah, and of course, if you’re into charging mobile devices wirelessly while getting $2,500 Remy Martin bottle service, Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club is also supporting PMA-based wireless charging spots. Of course. For a full list of spots, check the PR below the break.

You Can Now Search Through Facebook Photos on BingWell here’s a strange little feature that has popped up as a result of Microsoft and Facebook’s alliance: the ability to search through the photos of you and your friends. If you ever wanted to find that one photo a friend posted, but can’t remember what album it was in, but can remember what the caption said, you might find this useful. Plus, it looks nice. Microsoft sets ‘do not track’ as default on IE10, ruffles feathers

Microsoft sets 'do not track' as default on IE10, ruffles feathers

Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 won’t be the first major browser to pack a “do not track” component, but it’ll be the first to have it switched on by default. Though Microsoft doesn’t yet support the feature on its own websites, it plans to help hammer out the protocols by cooperating with industry, government and standards organizations in the months ahead. With Twitter’s support for the measure, the crew in Redmond isn’t the only one kicking the privacy ball forward. The Digital Advertising Alliance, however, isn’t pleased with the development, in no small part because it struck a deal with the White House to honor “do not track” so long as it’s not a default setting. Despite the move, Microsoft said it hopes users will choose to share their data with advertisers to receive more relevant advertising. Hit the more coverage links for added details on Microsoft’s feather ruffling.

Twenty-four telecom operators unite to form Wholesale Applications Community

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/twenty-four-telecom-operators-unite-to-form-wholesale-applicatio/

Big doings over in Barcelona today. Twenty-four telecom operators, with the support of the GSMA and three major hardware manufacturers, have formally announced they will come together to form the Wholesale Applications Community. Essentially, the goal of the alliance will be to create a viable, cohesive and open industry platform for mobile app developers. Members of the Community will include AT&T, China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, TeliaSonera, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and Vodafone among others, and they’ll be supported in their endeavors by LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. The total customers of the group is about 3 billion, giving WAC (our name) some considerable — albeit theoretical for the moment — power. The group plans to work on coming up with a standard for working across platforms over the next twelve months. WAC’s website just went live a bit ago — there’s a link to it below — and the full press release is after the break.
