Amazon has another chest-thumping, but detail free, proclamation about Kindle sales.

It tells All Things D, “Wednesday was the $199 Kindle Fire HD’s biggest day of sales since launch and up 3x week over week.”

Apple announced the iPad mini on Tuesday, so the clear suggestion is that people waited to see what Apple was releasing. Once they saw it, they opted for Amazon’s less expensive option.

With Amazon, though, we really have no idea what that statement means. It doesn’t provide any details on Kindle unit sales. For all we know, the company sold 200 Kindle Fire HDs on Wednesday.

Amazon is going to hire 50,000 seasonal workers for the holidays. Pretty awesome.

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 16, 2012– Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is hiring for more than 50,000 seasonal positions at its fulfillment centers across the U.S. this holiday season.

“In addition to the thousands of people we’ve hired for full-time jobs this year, we’re proud to be adding more than 50,000 seasonal jobs this holiday,” said Dave Clark, vice president, Global Customer Fulfillment. “We’re hiring at our sites across the U.S. for talented individuals to help us deliver a great experience for our customers this holiday season. Temporary associates play a critical role in meeting increased customer demand during the holiday season, and we expect thousands of temporary associates will stay on in full-time positions.”

Amazon employs more than 20,000 people across its 40 U.S. fulfillment centers and pays its full-time, permanent employees 30 percent more than what traditional retail store employees earn—and that doesn’t even include the stock grants that full-time employees receive, which over the past five years have added an average of 9 percent to base pay annually.

For its full-time, permanent positions, Amazon offers competitive hourly wages, Amazon stock grants, and comprehensive benefits, including medical and dental coverage, company-paid vision, company-paid life insurance, company-paid disability insurance, paid vacation, a 401(k) plan with a company match and discount programs. This year, Amazon launched Career Choice, an innovative program designed to expand the choices available to associates in their future career, whether that’s at Amazon or in another industry. The Biggest Difference Between Apple And Amazon (AAPL, AMZN)

Now that Amazon is going all-in on tablets, and likely to release its own smartphone, the comparisons between it and Apple are going to pick up.

Below is a chart from Dan Frommer at ReadWriteWeb that shows the biggest difference between the two companies. Apple, as you can see, makes an insane amount of money each quarter, whereas Amazon does not.

This is because Apple sells very expensive hardware while Amazon is a retailer who operates on very thin margins. Jeff Bezos is okay with this arrangement. He says Amazon charges low prices because it wants to be in alignment with its customers, who want low prices.

The Explosion In Kindle Book Sales (AMZN)

Here’s a very cool chart Amazon flashed at today’s Kindle event. It shows how quickly sales of Kindle books have grown in comparison to physical book sales.

We don’t get any absolute numbers, so we’re missing part of the picture, but it’s pretty safe to assume Amazon sells a lot of physical books. And its e-book sales have blown away physical book sales.

Amazon Appears To Be Inflating The List Prices Of Some Discounted Items (AMZN)

You know how when you shop on Amazon there is a price and a then a “list price” which is usually much higher?

The effect is that you feel like you’re getting a big discount shopping on Amazon.

It turns out Amazon might be publishing list prices that are too high.

Mouse Print first noticed the problem with an array of general consumer products such as Kraft’s Mac & Cheese and a 100-count box of Splenda.

As if this afternoon, most of these prices have been fixed, except for a ton of pet food items.

Take for example the dog treats you see above. The retail value of one Merrick Flossies is approximately $4, making a 50-count supply valued at no more than $200. Yet Amazon claims the list price stands at a whopping $422.89, more than doubled what it should cost.

We tried to contact Amazon for comments, but did not receive a response.

The incident reminds us of last year when Amazon listed a seemingly normal book about flies for $23,698,655.93. Biologist Michael Eisen blogged about the unrealistic selling price, and documented how Amazon’s price for the book The Making of a Fly constantly went up day after another.

Here’s what happened: A professor required this book for a class and students naturally flocked to Amazon to purchase the text. Eventually, only two sellers still had the product available.

Because the book quickly became an exclusive, hot ticket item, Amazon’s algorithm for retailers to competitively price their product catapulted the retail value to more than $23 million.

We’re not sure if this is the same situation with the pet food offerings on the site, but it seems hard to believe the world is running out of doggie treats.

A Leak From The USA TODAY Shows How The Kindle Fire Is Blowing Away Other Android Tablets (AMZN, APPL)

Here’s an interesting look at how the platform wars are playing out across smartphones and tablets.

GeekWire landed an internal slide from USA Today that lists how many times its application has been downloaded. USA Today has a wider, more geographically diverse readership than most other newspapers, giving us insights into the ecosystem that we might not get from the typical measurement companies.

If USA Today’s internal statistics are any indication, the Kindle Fire is blowing other Android tablets out of the water. The slide shows 260,000 downloads of its app for Kindle Fire compared with only 130,000 for other Android tablets. That’s a two-to-one ratio.

The Kindle Fire still trails the iPad by some ~2.6 million downloads, but that’s unsurprising. What’s more impressive is how much headway the Kindle Fire has made in the short time since its release.

Further, you can see that the iPhone app is still beating the Android app in downloads. And Windows Phone has a lot of work to do.

AT&T Is Going To Try To Blow Away Amazon’s Cloud (AMZN, T)

There’s already no shortage of companies with their own “clouds” trying to blow up Amazon’s popular web services.

Now AT&T will too.

On Monday AT&T announced  AT&T Cloud Architect, which it describes as “a developer-centric cloud platform providing storage and infrastructure as-a-service.” Sound familiar? It should. That’s what Amazon’s Web Services does, as does Microsoft Azure, IBM’s SmartCloud, Red Hat’s OpenShift and countless others.

AT&T has promised that it’s new cloud will support multiple flavors of Linux (CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat) as well as Windows Server.

AT&T was vague as to when its cloud would be available, saying that it would be turned on sometime in the next few weeks, reports Ars Technica.

The news is significant for another reason. AT&T is choosing OpenStack to build its cloud, making it the first carrier to join the OpenStack consortium. OpenStack is an open-source cloud architecture project based on a collaboration between NASA and hosting company Rackspace. It’s not the only open source cloud architecture, but it is the one that seems to be winning the most support with the most important participants.

Having the cloud industry settle on one architecture is good for enterprise customers. It ensures they won’t get stuck with one cloud vendor. They can move their applications more easily between multiple clouds built with the same technology.

That’s the heart of the complaint thrown at Amazon by competitors like Rackspace. They say Amazon’s proprietary technology makes it hard for customers to move.

Google Is Getting Ready To Take On Amazon…In Shipping? (GOOG, AMZN)

Google is talking to major retailers like Macy’s, the Gap, and OfficeMax to offer customers one-day shipping when they buy products after finding them through Google searches.

It sounds a lot like Amazon Prime, Amazon’s $79-per-year service that offers fast shipping and other benefits.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the service, and confirmed that Macy’s had been approached by Google to participate.

The next-day shipping will apparently be combined with Google Product Search, which today lets users find products and compare them across different e-commerce sites to get the lowest price. When people buy a product from one of the sites after finding it on Google Product Search, they’ll get an offer for one day shipping for a low fee, the Journal says.

Google won’t be running an e-commerce site or stocking products in warehouses like Amazon does, but will instead create a system that figures out which retail partner’s stores are nearest to a customer and have the product in stock. Then it would team up with UPS and local couriers for delivery.

Still, e-commerce fulfillment is a pretty big step removed from Google’s core mission of organizing the world’s information. Lack of focus has been a problem for the company, and CEO Larry Page has killed a lot of non-core products this year

Developers Are Excited About The Kindle Fire (AMZN, AAPL)

Before the Kindle Fire even hits the market, it is drawing considerable interest from developers, according to an IDC poll of 2,160 developers.

The Fire is second behind the Galaxy Tab as the Android tablet developers are most interested in doing work for. Not a huge endorsement considering how weak the Android tablet app market is, but IDC says the level of interest is equal to what Apple had with the iPad pre-launch.

If the Amazon is going to have a long term life in the tablet market, it’s going to need developers building apps for its tablets.
