CHART OF THE DAY: What The Heck Happened To Apple’s iPad Business? (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-what-the-heck-happened-to-apples-ipad-business-2013-7

Apple’s iPad business, which is supposed to be its second mega-business, has already hit the wall as far as growth is concerned.

Last quarter, Apple reported sales of 14.6 million units, a 14% drop on a year-over-year basis. On the company’s earnings call, Apple’s execs said that if you look at the actual sell through of the iPad, and factor in channel inventory changes, then it was down 3%.

Part of the reason the iPad business fell is that Apple didn’t roll out a new version of the iPad last quarter. In the June 2012 quarter, it was introduced the high-resolution iPad which boosted sales. With no new model of the iPad, sales lagged in comparison.

However, last year Apple wasn’t selling the iPad Mini. The $329 iPad Mini should have provided enough of a lift to offset the lack of a new iPad model.

This isn’t just a one-off bad quarter. If you look at the trend, you can see that growth is in a general nose dive for the iPad. Analyst Gene Munster says the reason the iPad business is weaker than expected is that the market is “becoming more price sensitive than we previously expected.” In other words, consumers are buying cheaper tablets from Apple’s rivals.

For why that’s troubling for Apple, check out Henry Blodget’s take here…

The Astounding Growth Of iPhone Profits (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-apples-gross-profit-per-product-2012-8

Make no mistake about it, Apple is now the iPhone company.

This chart, based on information from Apple and estimates from our own Henry Blodget, shows how gross profit from the iPhone has exploded since it was introduced in 2007. It basically overshadows profits from all other divisions at Apple.

Blodget estimates gross profits will be $67 billion in 2014, up from an estimated $44 billion this year.

How Apple’s Business Completely Changed

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-apples-business-completely-changed-2012-1

What a difference a few years makes. Four years ago, Apple analysts fretted over iPod shipments and computer sales when an earnings call rolled around. All the early chatter is now focused on whether surging iPhone and iPad sales will even be enough to meet soaring expectations.

The iPad, only a rumor two years ago, accounted for 24% of revenue last quarter. The iPhone, meanwhile, has jumped from 10% of revenue at the beginning of 2008 to 39% last quarter–and nearly 50% at the beginning of last year. With the tablet market still in its infancy and huge opportunities still available in mobile, the shift in Apple’s revenues has only just begun. All of which should futher underline the changing nature of their business: Apple is essentially a mobile computing company.

Which is not to say the rest of the company isn’t growing. Mac shipments were up 20.7% year-over-year in the fourth quarter, according to Gartner–even as the rest of the PC market fell 5.9%. It’s just that they have not kept up with the astronomic growth of the company’s mobile products.

Apple’s REAL Earnings Expectations (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-apples-real-earnings-expectations-2012-1

Apple consistently releases comically low guidance, then obliterates it. For the last six quarters, Apple has beaten its guided EPS by 38%, and revenue by 16%.

If the trend holds, Apple will report $12.86 in EPS, and $42.9 billion in revenue. That would blow away the Street’s expectation of $10.07 EPS, and $38.76 billion.

Apple’s Macs Are Growing, Everyone Else Is Tanking

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-macs-are-growing-everyone-else-is-tanking-2012-1

This chart from the Wall Street Journal tweeted by Barry Ritholtz tells you all you need to know about competition in the PC business.

These are sales of PCs in the US in Q4, by manufacturer. This does not include iPad sales, which would put Apple’s growth off the charts.

Even without iPad sales, Apple is now the third largest PC manufacturer in the U.S.

Android Can’t Even Keep Up With Apple’s Three-Year-Old iPhone Camera On Flickr (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/click-apples-iphone-4s-is-the-second-most-popular-camera-phone-on-flickr-2011-11

flickr camera log

The iPhone 4S is now the second-most popular camera phone on Flickr after coming out just more than a month ago.

The iPhone 4 is still the most popular camera phone on Flickr. It’s also the most popular camera overall. There’s only one Android-powered phone that even comes close to competing with Apple’s phones. Even the iPhone 3G, which is now three generations old, is still crushing it.

The iPhone 4S sports a better camera with improved sensor and a revamped lens.

Keep in mind Apple only has a few models of phones while there are dozens running Android.
