Video Streaming Has Plenty Of Headroom In Tablet Market
Source: https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/welcome
Netflix’s video streaming service already counts 36% of U.S. tablet owners as subscribers, according to a recent Morgan Stanley study.
The bank’s AlphaWise survey of over 1,100 tablet owners also found that over 40% of respondents said they never had Netflix. That translates to over 27 million U.S. tablet owners who have never subscribed and could be targeted for further growth. Also, 19% of the tablet owners said they had cancelled their Netflix, and 3% said they switched to Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service.
Two years after the iPad’s launch, sizable opportunities still abound in the tablet market, even in a fairly exploited niche like video. Morgan Stanley’s survey also reveals how new entrants like Prime Instant Video, introduced in early 2011, can quickly begin to nip at the heels of market leaders. Subscription video exploiting more narrow subjects (performing arts or sports, for example) will likely also find room to grow.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A technical problem affecting the Visa network barred some people around the United States from using their credit and debit cards for about 45 minutes on Sunday, the company said.
The outage was caused by a recent update Visa has made to its system, said Visa Inc. spokeswoman Sandra Chu. She said Visa had trouble processing some transactions as a result, but the system is operating normally now.
Chu said the problem Sunday was unrelated to the security breach potentially affecting Visa and MasterCard customers that was reported Friday by credit card processor Global Payments Inc.
The outage occurred from around 2:40 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. EDT, a person from a major bank said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because bank employees were not authorized to speak publicly. Visa had notified the banks that are members of its network of the problem.
Consumers and merchants reported having Visa cards rejected on Sunday.
At the Shoot Smart gun range in Fort Worth, Texas, manager Jared Sloane said credit and debit transactions stopped working early in the afternoon.
Sloane said a few customers walked out when told they could only pay with cash or check, but otherwise the problem wasn’t yet much of a disruption.
Shoot Smart said problems with transactions were persisting at about 6:40 EDT.
Chu said Visa’s system was fully up and operational.

The lower bonus situation on Wall Street isn’t just for the bankers, but for the companies that service the bankers as well.
Since Bloomberg LP failed to meet its quota for selling its famous terminals, everyone at the financial media giant will receive lower bonus payouts, the New York Post reported citing an internal memo.
That means your favorite Bloomberg News reporters and Bloomberg TV anchors will take home a lower paycheck, according to the report.
If you’re not already familiar with the Bloomberg terminal, it’s basically a computer that’s targeted toward financial professionals so they can message other users, obtain real-time market data, news and stock quotes among many other functions.
They’re really awesome.
According to the Post, there are currently 310,000 terminals that are being used worldwide. However, the company only added 13,672 in 2011, which was short of its internal sales goal of 15,000.
So if they sold 1,328 more they wouldn’t be having this lower payout problem. Of course, it’s not exactly the best environment out there on Wall Street.
On a side note, revenue at Bloomberg climbed $720 million, or 10.5%, to $7.59 billion, the Post reported.

YBUY allows impulse tech buyers to wonder, ‘Why not?’
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/17/ybuy-allows-impulse-tech-buyers-to-wonder-why-not/
It’s always helpful when tech start-ups scheme new ways for you to burn through that bank account. Like YBUY, the membership-only site that charges a monthly fee in exchange for trying out the latest and greatest in gadgetry, like an iPad 2 or Xbox 360, sans shipping fees. The fresh-out-of-beta portal offers approved users the ability to return or purchase the pre-selected goods after a 30 day trial period, with that recurring charge going towards the full retail price if you choose to opt-in. Its co-founders claim to curate the ever-changing roster of high-end kit, taking into account the best product reviews (ahem) and even featuring certified refurbs. So, what’s the catch? Well, there doesn’t really appear to be any. It’s simply up to you to curb that tech enthusiasm and keep your credit card balance resting peacefully at zero.

A Raid On A Luxury Ski Resort Has Uncovered The True Scale Of Tax Evasion In Italy
Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/italy-tax-ski-resort-2012-1

A raid by Italian tax officials on a luxury ski resort revealed dire rates of tax evasion, reports the Telegraph.
Officials traced the license plates of several of the Lamborginis, Ferraris and other high-end vehicles that lined the streets of Cortina d’Ampezzo, a popular ski resort among wealthy Italians. In all, 133 vehicles were investigated; the owners of 42 of these were found to have reported annual salaries of less than $28,000 a year.
The investigators also reportedly found that hotels, restaurants and boutiques in the resort were wildly under-declaring how much income they were generating.
For example, Reuters reports that restaurants being studied by authorities were issuing sales receipts amounting to 300 percent more sales than the previous year. This demonstrated the fact that such establishments had not previously issued sales receipts in order to cut down their tax bills.
The news wire also added that tax evasion is becoming such a severe problem in Italy that the government is installing special dogs at borders, designed to sniff out bank notes with the aim of stopping people smuggling their savings abroad.

And Now You Can Use Facebook To Share Your Citibank Rewards Points With Your Friends
Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/citibank-turns-rewards-into-social-currency-2012-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Credit card rewards are the new social currency.
Citibank customers can now use Facebook to pool their rewards points online.
The bank on Tuesday launched a Facebook application that lets users team up to use their points, whether it’s for charity, a group gift or a personal goal. Citi says it’s the first bank to offer such a feature.
The app builds on a service Citi introduced last year that lets customers transfer points to one another on the bank’s homepage. After getting feedback, executives decided to expand the rewards sharing capability and offer it through social media.
“Now we’re delivering it to where customers are every day,” said Ralph Andretta, who heads Citi’s loyalty programs and co-branded cards.
Andretta noted that customers will have far more flexibility with their points, whether it’s to help a friend fly home from college or team up for a big-ticket reward. The company is giving away 2,500 free rewards points to each of the first 4,000 customers to sign up.
To get started, customers download the ThankYou Point Sharing App, which is linked on Citi’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/citibank.
Customers can then start a rewards pool by naming a recipient and explaining its purpose. The recipient of the points maintains control of any contributions, so it’s best if you know and trust that person.
Pool recipients must be individuals and cannot be an organization, even if the intended goal is a charitable donation.
Users can promote their goals by sharing links on their Facebook pages or privately inviting other Citi customers to contribute. Donors can see the total number of points a cause has amassed.
The app can collect personal information from Facebook profiles. But Citi says it does not share any customer account information with Facebook.
The program isn’t only for credit card holders either. Citi checking account customers can also earn ThankYou points. Citi introduced its lineup of ThankYou credit cards last year.

Fraudsters Now Using 3D Printers To Make Authentic Looking ATM Skimmers [Scams]
Source: http://gizmodo.com/5866491/fraudsters-now-using-3d-printers-to-make-authentic-looking-atm-skimmers
What looks like the card slot from a Chase Bank ATM is actually a sophisticated card skimmer removed from a branch in West Hills, California. And police believe a 3D printer may have been used to create it.
Those green bulbous card slots that were supposed to make it very difficult for a card skimmer to be attached to an ATM have turned out to be just a minor inconvenience for sophisticated thieves. Investigators believe this skimmer—which perfectly fits over the ATM’s regular slot— was created from a mould that came from a 3D printer. Which means those behind this particular ATM scheme had some very expensive tools at their disposal.
In addition to being a perfect replica of the ATM’s standard card slot, this skimmer incorporates a small pinhole camera that starts recording the PIN pad whenever a card is inserted. On the underside is a series of holes that investigators believe allowed the thieves to download data and footage, but the complex electronics on the inside may have been salvaged from a cellphone, giving this skimmer wireless connectivity. So in the future, like in many situations, make sure you take a good look at the hardware before you stick your thing in the slot. [KrebsonSecurity via BoingBoing]
