Privacy A Growing Concern For Almost 2 in 3 Internet Users

(By comparison, an earlier survey from TRUSTe found 69% of smartphone users saying they do not like being tracked. And on a related note, recent survey results from uSamp indicate that smartphone users are more trusting of the US government with their personal information than they are of Google, Facebook and Twitter.)

The DAA exited the TPWG (acronym alert!) to focus on its own resources. So how do consumers feel about the DAA’s AdChoices program? Awareness of the icon has steadily grown, according to the latest TRUSTe report, from 5% in 2011 to 21% this year. Moreover, 40% of respondents feel more positive about the concept of online behavioral advertising (OBA) when presented with the icon, and 44% are more positive about the individual advertiser when they see the icon on a banner ad.

Interestingly, online adults’ aided awareness of OBA appears to have dropped slightly, from 83% last year to 80% in this latest survey. Even so, the proportion of respondents wh! o believe! that personally identifiable information (PII) is attached to tracking activity has grown from 53 to 57%. These respondents are far more likely to feel that online privacy is a “really important issue” than those who don’t believe it is attached (59% vs. 37%).

This year, 36% of respondents indicated that they’re comfortable with advertisers using their web browsing history to show relevant ads as long as it is not tied to any other personally identifiable information. That figure marks a substantial increase from 29% last year.

Other Findings:

  • 68% of TRUSTe survey respondents refuse to allow companies to share their information with 3rd parties often or most of the time, down from 76% last year.
  • 52% manage their privacy choices by opting out of OBA with that level of frequency, up slightly from 50% last year.
  • 35% have stopped doing business with a company or have stopped using the company’s website due to privacy concerns.
  • More internet users this year are taking steps to protect their privacy, such as by manually deleting cookies, automatically deleting them, or using browsing privacy add-ons and features for ad-blocking or anti-tracking.
  • Internet users are most likely to hold themselves responsible for their privacy protection. However, they seem to be recognizing an increasing role in the advertising ecosystem for independent organizations.

Native Mobile Ad Formats Seeing Strong Engagement Rates

source: http://www.marketingcharts.com/wp/online/native-mobile-ad-formats-seeing-strong-engagement-rates-36301/?utm_campaign=rssfeed&utm_source=mc&utm_medium=textlink

Celtra-Mobile-Native-Ad-Formats-Performance-in-Q2-Aug2013An analysis of mobile expandable banner ad performance indicates that native mobile ad formats delivered an average expansion rate/click-through rate of 1.37% during the second quarter of this year, according to the latest quarterly report from Celtra. That compares favorably with benchmarks from other studies, which put the average click-through rate for standard mobile banner ads at 0.35% (Opera), desktop rich media ads at 0.14%, and standard desktop banner ads at 0.1% (MediaMind).

According to Celtra’s study, which was based on more than 100 mobile rich media campaigns running across a mix of different suppliers, native ad formats enjoyed an ad engagement rate of 39.1%, while social rich media ad formats sported an even higher engagement rate, of 55.2%.

Expansion rates for standard rich media ads appeared to grow alongside the quality of the media, rising from 0.36% for standard ad networks to 0.57% for premium ad networks and 0.73% for data-driven premium ad networks. Ad engagement rates did not follow the same pattern, though, highest on premium ad networks (162%) and lowest on data-driven networks (12.1%).

drag2share: The Emergence Of Native Ads On Mobile, And How They’re Turning Mobile Advertising On Its Head

source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/businessinsider/~3/JsDLD3lfkaE/the-emergence-of-native-ads-on-mobile-2013-8

u.s. mobile

We are in the post-PC era, and soon billions of consumers will be carrying around Internet-connected mobile devices for up to 16 hours a day. Mobile audiences have exploded as a result.

The advertising industry can’t quite seem to figure out how to advertise effectively to these audiences. Many mobile ads are simply banner or search ads bought inadvertently as advertisers aim for digital audiences.

Native ads are being touted as the new formats that will bring real depth and differentiation to the mobile ad market.

But what exactly is a native ad on mobile? Is it just an ad unit that was designed to show on a mobile device?

In a new report from BI Intelligence on native ads and native ads on mobile, we interview a half-dozen industry experts, we explain away the confusion surrounding native mobile ads, we categorize the various types of native ads that have gained traction on mobile, and we examine the growing role played by publishers and agencies in nurturing the native-mobile ecosystem and upending the traditional banner ad.

Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer Is Pushing IntoNow Hard (YHOO)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/yahoos-marissa-mayer-is-pushing-intonow-hard-2012-9

Yahoo’s board hired Marissa Mayer because she is a product visionary.

This has left those of us on the outside wondering which Yahoo product Mayer will put her weight behind first.

Turns out it’s IntoNow, the TV-watching app for iPhone, Android and iPad.

We just clicked on a Yahoo News link from Twitter. Check out the floating banner we found on the page:

Yahoo IntoNow Banner

What’s funny is that IntoNow is a mobile app, and I am on a desktop computer.

What’s the point of showing me this banner?

Also, does asking people to download an app with a banner ad actually work? We’d have figured the only way for apps to really grow is through organic growth. You know: people hearing about a great app from their friends and then installing it because they think it sounds useful.

Lift in search volume indicates that customers …

… saw the ad, recalled it, and thought it relevant enough at the time to make the effort to take action — search for more information about it (beyond the tidbit of info contained in the 30 second ad, print ad, radio spot, or banner ad).

But traditional ads are still very very costly and inefficient due to the extremely large media cost.

For example, at the extreme cost of a Superbowl ad, the following advertisers were able to drive fleeting (short-lived) lift in search volume: godaddy, etrade, sobe lifewater, dennys.

Notes from the Field: Made Up Words; Digital Jargonisms

web potato – the new couch potato

digital natives – the kids who dont know what newspapers are or what linear TV is

digital immigrants – old(er) ad execs who arrived on the island of digital, praying someone would save them from it help them figure it out

professional malpractice – preaching about digital when you’ve never tweeted or facebooked

obd – obsessive branding disorder

twinterns – interns who were hired to twitter

timeshifting – watching TV at whatever-the-hell-time they want

placeshifting – watching TV at whatever-the-hell-place they want

addressable audience – old(er) ad execs thinking digital gives them more tools to target (address) individual consumers with unwanted ad messages

niche-busters – blockbusters but for smaller (niche) audiences

analog dollars for digital dimes – with the greater efficiency and measurability of advertising in digital mediums, for every dollar taken out of analog mediums, only dimes need to be put back into digital to achieve similar or greater effect

I know I am wasting half of my ad dollars; I just don’t know which half — is more like “I know I am wasting 99% of my ad dollars” (banner ad click through rates are generously at 1%, which means the other 99% is known to be, for sure, wasted — no more guessing necessary).

measured media = TV, print, radio — which equals not really measurable at all

(old) branding – the process of systematically duping customers into buying inferior products by mis-information, dis-information, and lying

(new) branding – consistently delivering on the promise of superior products through rapid, customer-driven innovation

re-intermediation – re-insertion of a digital middleman whose job it is to filter, prioritize, and deliver only what is relevant and timely

click farms – banks of low-wage workers who click google ads to earn a living rather than do farming
