App downloads have accelerated since the beginning of the year. Approximately 10 billion apps were downloaded last year, up from ~7 billion in 2010. With ~10 billion apps downloaded through the first six months of 2012, downloads will more than double this year.

Entrepreneurs Can See The Future, And Here’s What The Future Looks Like

ron conway Entrepreneurs Can See The Future, And Heres What The Future Looks Like

SV Angel’s Ron Conway has been an investor since 1994.  In this month’s issue of The Economist, Conway writes his 2012 startup predictions.

First he says the social web has hardly reached maturity. We’ve only seen the beginning of what’s possible via Facebook. “Some 90% of the world’s data have been generated in the past two years,” he writes.

Conway thinks social interactions will be at the heart of most new products moving forward. They’ll influence everything from search results to how mom and pop shops conduct their businesses.

Conway also notes how quickly startups are seeing success at the local level. Groupon built a multi-billion-dollar business in three years. Conway wonders if we’ll see a startup become a true $1 billion business in 12 months in 2012.

The biggest trend Conway sees is something he calls “collaborative  consumption.”  By that he means people area willing to share or rent things instead of buy them. Airbnb and ZipCar are good examples of this.

Conway concludes by saying why he loves startups. “The answer is quite simple: these entrepreneurs share their vision of the future with me. And every so often, their vision becomes the future. What could be more interesting than that?”

Groupon Deal Strands Customers In Vegas [Social Networks]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5844103/groupon-deal-strands-customers-in-las-vegas

lvgroupon Groupon Deal Strands Customers In Vegas [Social Networks]Several Internet bargain hunters wanting to visit Vegas on the cheap found out the hard way that some deals are just too good to be true.

Several Groupon and Voice Daily Deals Users users bought round-trip bus tickets from Southern California to Las Vegas for $45. The price was great, but the trip was a mini disaster due to the negligence of LUX Ground Transportation, the bus company that provided the deal.

The problems started right at the beginning with many buses arriving hours later than scheduled or, sometimes, not showing up at all. When the buses did arrive, they brought their passengers safely to Las Vegas, but never returned to bring them home. Oops.

All’s well that ends well, though. A shuttle from another company was called in to rescue these abandoned passengers. And Groupon eventually canceled the deal and refunded customer’s money. LUX didn’t fare as well. It appears the company was operating without a business license and has shuttered its doors now that the world’s eyes are upon it. [MSNBC]

A Whole Lot of Games [Ipad]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5511650/ipad-apps-by-the-numbers-a-whole-lot-of-games

500x 1 distimo number of applications ipad A Whole Lot of Games [Ipad]It’s still very, very early in the world of iPad-specific apps, with less than 2,500 of them in the store compared to 150,000+ iPhone apps. But so far? It’s totally dominated by games.

App store analysts Distimo did a rundown of what you’ll find in the iPad app store, and a full third of them are games. The next closest category is “entertainment,” which clocks in at 11%, followed by “education” at 8.6%.

That seems like a whole lot of game playing and being entertained, but that proportion is even more heavy for iPhone apps, where a full 70% of apps fall into those two categories.

500x 2 distimo most popular categories ipad and iphone A Whole Lot of Games [Ipad]But with devs just getting the actual hardware into their hands a few days ago, we’re clearly just seeing the very beginning of the iPad apps craze. And depending on how people decide the want to use this thing, we could see even more games pop up or we could see the store balanced out with more content-based or productivity apps. But really, the smart money is on games, games, games. [Distimo via TechCrunch]
