drag2share: Facebook Is Riddled With Click Farms Where Workers Generate 1,000 Likes For $1

source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/businessinsider/~3/xJLbpbXoNgE/how-low-paid-workers-at-click-farms-create-appearance-of-online-popularity-2013-8

the guardianHow much do you like courgettes, the green vegetable Americans call zucchini? According to one Facebook page devoted to them, hundreds of people find them delightful enough to click the “like” button – even with dozens of other pages about courgettes to choose from.

There’s just one problem: the liking was fake, done by a team of low-paid workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh, whose boss demanded just $15 per thousand “likes” at his “click farm”. Workers punching the keys might be on a three-shift system, and be paid as little as $120 a year.

The ease with which a humble vegetable could win approval calls into question the basis on which many modern companies measure success online – through Facebook likes, YouTube video views and Twitter followers.

Android Was Supposed To Be a Camera OS

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5994852/android-was-supposed-to-be-a-camera-os

Android Was Supposed To Be a Camera OSAndy Rubin, the now-departed former boss of Google’s Android division, has revealed that the OS was initially developed to power digital cameras, before the slump in snapper sales encouraged his team to turn it into a mobile phone system.

“The exact same platform, the exact same operating system we built for cameras, that became Android for cellphones,” Rubin told attendees at an economic forum in Tokyo. “We decided digital cameras wasn’t actually a big enough market. I was worried about Microsoft and I was worried about Symbian, I wasn’t worried about iPhone yet.”

Rubin showed off a presentation he put together in 2004, which showed a digital camera connecting to a computer and uploading images to a central server known as the… Android Datacenter. Once he’d switched it to a mobile OS, Android and Rubin’s team were acquired by Google in 2005. [PC World]

The Most Popular Twitter Hashtags of 2011 [Twitter]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5865096/the-most-popular-twitter-hashtags-of-2011

The Most Popular Twitter Hashtags of 2011Sure you could say that Twitter has devolved into a chaotic mess filled with #AreWeSeriouslyTweetingThisLongHashtag and Bieber freaks, but it’s still boss at figuring out what’s going on at this very second. So taking a look back at the past year, what were the most popular Twitter moments in 2011? It gets a little weird.

It either speaks to my growing uncoolness or Twitter’s tween explosion that I have no idea what channel Pretty Little Liars is on, why Raven Symone is more popular than Natalie Portman on the actress list and how the Sony NGP a more talked about topic than the iPhone and Android. What is going on?!

My favorite list though, has to be the most popular food and drink items of 2011:

McLobster
Fried Kool-Aid
Starbucks Trenta
Devassa Beer
Guinness
BBQ
Mac & Cheese

We’re all so fat it is glorious. Anyway, here are the most popular Twitter hashtags of 2011:

#egypt
#tigerblood
#threewordstoliveby
#idontunderstandwhy
#japan
#improudtosay
#superbowl
#jan25

Hey egypt, japan, jan25 and even tigerblood and superbowl sum up the year fairly well! Good job tweeple. But #improudtosay, #idontunderstandwhy #threewordstoliveby managed to make the top freaking hashtags of the year. Let’s do better in 2012 Twitter. [“>Twitter]
