The Social Makeup of Social Media: Income Breakdown

Source: http://blog.compete.com/2012/12/20/the-social-makeup-of-social-media-income-breakdown/

Out of sheer curiosity, we here at Compete used our demographic data to craft a mini-infographic showing the income breakdown across 6 of the top social sites. The US Browser Population is lined beneath each data-set for further comparison and context.

Of these properties, LinkedIn shows the most notable emphasis towards a specific demographic, individuals earning 60k and above. Pinterest shows a slightly higher representation among higher income demographics and Tumblr shows the same slight skew towards less affluent demographics.

Facebook and Google+ show even representation between all demographics, probably a result of how pervasive they are across the social-scape.

Actually, You Only Get To Use About Half The Storage On The Cheapest Surface Tablet (MSFT)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-surface-storage-2012-11

The cheapest model of Microsoft’s new Surface tablet comes with 32 GB storage, twice that of the cheapest iPad.

But here’s why: According to Microsoft, the Surface’s operating system takes up nearly half that space, leaving you with only 16 GB to play around with. In contrast, Apple’s iOS operating system only takes up about 1 GB of space.

Here’s the full breakdown from Microsoft, which we originally saw on TNW:

surface rt operating system

In a Reddit AMA session a few weeks ago, Microsoft’s Surface team said that the 32 GB model would have about 20 GB of free space. It looks like you actually get a bit less than that.

So while 32 GB sounds like a good deal, keep in mind you’re only getting a bit more storage than you would get on a similarly-priced iPad.

How One Twitter User Broke The News Of Whitney Houston’s Death An Entire Hour Before The Press

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-one-twitter-user-broke-the-news-of-whitney-houstons-death-an-entire-hour-before-the-press-2012-2

When news spread Saturday night of Whitney Houston‘s passing, it was the AP who had the first official statement from Houston’s publicist confirming the singer’s death.

But an entire hour before that, Twitter user Brittany J. Pullard (aka @BarBeeBrit) was the first person to tweet the news, according to the below graph posted by Twitter, courtesy of @isaach.

@BarBeeBritt, who resides in Los Angeles and enjoys the Hollywood club scene, as evident by her Twitter feed, tweeted at 4:02pm PST to her then-799 followers:

WHitney Tweet

The tweet only received three retweets and @BarBreeBritt never revealed how exactly she heard the news, but Twitter user @AjaDiorNavy quickly had specific details of Houston’s passing at 4:15pm PST that weren’t released to the public until nearly 24 hours after the initial incident.

Twitter

Once the AP tweeted the official statement from Houston’s publicist at 4:57pm PST, rapper Lil Wayne quickly expressed his condolences and received 29,000 retweets, according to Mediabistro.

Other celebrities voiced their sympathies as well, but after Lil Wayne, the top tweets went to:

Justin Bieber (15,000 retweets): “just heard the news. so crazy. One of the GREATEST VOICES EVER just passed. RIP Whitney Houston. My prayers go out to her friends and family.”

Nicki Minaj (9,000 retweets): “Jesus Christ, not Whitney Houston. Greatest of all time,” as well as tweeting a vintage photo of the late singer alongside Michael Jackson.

Katy Perry (8,000 retweets): “So devastating. We will always love you Whitney, R.I.P.”

As if there were any doubt, it appears Twitter truly is the fastest news source. Sorry, TMZ, solid effort.

Comcast’s extra ads ruin NFC championship game conclusion in some areas

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/23/comcast-xfinity-ads-interrupt-nfc-championship/

It wasn’t just RIM that had designs on the limelight during the football action last night. Comcast commercials appeared over the NFC Championship game last night, thoughtfully playing over the climax of the match ‘twixt the Giants and the 49ers. Frustrated fans who missed out on parts of the fourth quarter and overtime promptly began voicing dissent on the company’s support forums. The Washington Post has a quote from spokesperson Amiee Metrick indicating the problems were due to a possible “equipment failure” at a local Fox affiliate, WTTG, resulting in the ill-timed ads reported in Washington D.C. We’ve heard that of customers receiving a $10 credit and an apology, but it seems unlikely to soothe the brow of those — like the person who recorded video of the incident you can see after the break — thinking of switching to FiOS.

Update: We’ve received a response from Comcast (included after the break), and updated the post to clarify the apparent breakdown was at local Fox affiliate WTTG.

[Thanks, John]

In Case You Needed More Proof Android Is Walloping iOS (AAPL, GOOG, RIMM)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/comscore-mobile-subscriber-market-share-2011-12

ComScore’s three-month report on mobile subscribers (ending in November) is out.

The results: Samsung is the number one phone manufacturer in the U.S. and Android is still the top mobile OS.

Apple did see its smartphone market share grow a bit, from 27.3% to 28.7% in the last three months. But Google’s Android platform is still crushing it with 46.9% of the smartphone market in the U.S.

RIM’s BlackBerry OS continues to flail, dropping to 16.6% of the market from 19.7% three months ago. Windows Phone is treading water with about 5% of the market.

Here’s the chart:

Here’s Who Owns Facebook

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-facebook-ownership-2011-12

There’s only one reason Facebook is going to IPO: To make its employees and investors rich. Otherwise, Mark Zuckerberg would (somewhat ironically) keep the company private forever.

Who’s getting rich when the company does IPO? Using information leaked to Ryan Tate at Gawker, we have a breakdown here. Assuming Facebook can get that $100 billion valuation being floated in the press, here’s who would be worth what.

How Sony Actually Makes Money Is Very Surprising (SNE)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-sony-operating-income-september-2011-2011-11

Sony is a company famous for its consumer electronics like flat screen tvs, computers, and the PlayStation. But, incredibly, that’s not how it makes money.

Dan Frommer of SplatF points out the company loses hundreds of millions from consumer electronics. It actually makes money from its “financial services” division, which is made up of insurance and banking services.

Below is a breakdown of the operating income for each of its divisions in the most recent quarter.

Groupon’s Future Is Groupon Now

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-groupon-now-2011-10

Groupon Now is a mobile app that shows users all the deals surrounding them on a map.

Because it allows Groupon to offer more deals than one per day, Groupon Now is the future of Groupon’s business.

As Groupon’s margins compress, Groupon Now is supposed to save the company by bringing in a huge volume of sales.

Also, because the deals are offered in “real-time” Groupon Now is an important part of Groupon’s plan to become a “yield management platform for small businesses” – as one source recently described the vision to us.

Unfortunately, according to Yipit, Groupon Now isn’t growing very fast.

Go read Yipit’s whole, careful breakdown of Groupon Now’s slowing growth for more >>

The iPad Costs Apple As Little As $229.35 to Build

Source: http://feeds.gawker.com/~r/gizmodo/full/~3/s–4hn9Lyuk/the-ipad-costs-apple-as-little-as-22935-to-build

The $500 16GB, Wi-Fi only iPad costs Apple less than half that to build, according to a recent component breakdown from iSuppli. And for the 64GB 3G iPad, Apple clears nearly $500 in profit. Here’s how it breaks down:

Apple iPad Estimated Bill-of-Materials and Manufacturing Cost Analysis:
This will no doubt be updated once iSuppli and others are able to do a teardown of an actual device, but those estimated profit margins are pretty stunning, particularly on the higher-end models. iSuppli also points out that the 32GB versions of the iPad only cost $30 more to make than their 16GB counterparts, yet retail for $100 more—a good indication that that’s where they expect the sweet spot to be in the market.

Goes a long way to explaining why Apple’s so willing to be flexible on the price, no?[iSuppli]
