biiSmartphoneShipmentsByVendorWith the new iPhone 5S smartphone, Apple has doubled down on the areas of mobile with proven revenue-generation potential, for itself and app developers: payments, commerce, games, and photography.

As part of our quarterly update of major mobile industry trends, BI Intelligence took a first look at how the 5S and its new camera and fingerprint scanner might revolutionize several of the most lucrative mobile categories.

The iPhone 5S will be a bellwether for the mobile industry’s future.

Here’s why Apple’s new fingerprint scan technology called “Touch ID,” could be a boon for mobile commerce and mobile payments:

  • Currently, Touch ID will allow a user to authorize iTunes purchases with a quick scan of their thumb, instead of having to type in their password. It will also unlock the home screen.
  • Mobile commerce: But retailers want much more. The hope is for App! le to op en up the fingerprint scan technology so that it can be used for smoothing in-app purchases and e-commerce transactions.
  • Mobile payments: The same technology can power the use of mobile devices for “walletless” payments at bricks-and-mortar offline retail outlets. Add this to the industry-leading 435 million user credit cards Apple has on file (as well as its Passbook digital wallet app), and the 5S could act as a bridge for taking mobile payments mainstream.

The 5S will be twice as fast as the old iPhone 5 and 40 times faster than the original iPhone, according to Apple. The 64-bit A7 chip will be accompanied by a new motion-sensing coprocessor. This hardware combination will benefit certain application categories:

  • Fitness and health tracking apps, as well as gesture-controlled mobile games (games are top app store money-makers).
  • Photography. Improved lens and sensors are paired to Apple’s updated camera software on the 5S, creating an enhanced camera experience, including a stabilization feature, automatic editing of multiple rapid-fire exposures for a few great photos, and “dynamic to! ne mappi ng,” which can adjust picture quality (i.e., brightness, exposure) on individual parts of the image.
  • Let’s not forget that photography drives some of the most popular social networking and messaging apps (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.). Photography is at the heart of the mobile consumer’s experience, and where they put a great deal of their time, money, and care.

In one dramatic effort to combat showrooming, U.S. electronics retailer Best Buy announced last month that starting March 3, 2013, its stores would match the prices of 19 major online competitors, including Apple, Amazon, and Buy.com. Target also has a price-matching policy in effect.

When Warby Parker opened a flagship store in New York City, many people were shocked. No one expected the digital eyewear disruptor to expand their business to a bricks-and-mortar store.

Speaking at Internet Week this week, Neil Blumenthal, one of Warby Parker’s founders, said the move was strategic.

“We believe the future of retail is at the intersection of e-commerce and bricks-and-mortar,” he said. “People think it’s crazy that we went and signed a 10-year lease in SoHo, next to Ralph Lauren, across the street from the Apple Store. But we have actually been dabbling in bricks-and-mortar for about three years, almost as long as we have had the website open.”

When it launched, the start-up offered customers the option to try a number of glasses at home, he explained.

“That in itself was a physical form of sales, but what happened was that within 48 hours of launch, we were overwhelmed by demand and had to suspend the home trial program. And people would call up and say, ‘Hey, can we come to your office and try on glasses?’ And we would say, ‘Uh, we are working out of my apartment.’

“People would come in, and we would lay out the glasses on the dining room table. And we thought it was going to be a sub-optimal experience, but it ended up being a very special experience in that we could build relationships with our customers. They could try on all the glasses. We started to realize maybe there was a place for traditional bricks-and-mortar retail.”

The idea for the Warby Parker showroom and pop-ups was born. When those raked in profits, the company decided to open a flagship to anchor the brand. Now, 50 percent of their foot traffic and sales are driven by word-of-mouth, which Blumenthal says was exactly the point. “Our philosophy from the get-go has always been: How can we grow this primarily through word-of-mouth?

“It’s about how can we create special moments. When you walk into the store, most people are really surpr! ised, be cause it doesn’t look like any place they have ever been that sells eye glasses.”

Mastercard is already a big fish in the still tiny NFC contactless payment pond, and now it wants to take that same technology to a veritable ocean — internet sales. The plastic purveyor is tag-teaming with ING in the Netherlands for PayPass-based smartphone internet payments that would have a “comparable level of security” to bricks and mortar purchases — by transmitting an EMV-compliant cryptogram or QR code to merchants. That would theoretically make online shopping less risky, and the system would also allow coupons and vouchers to be applied, giving a “similar user experience in both the physical and digital world.” The Dutch trial has already started and will continue until early 2013, but there’s no word if new users can still jump in — check the PR after the break to read the tea leaves for yourself.

The Smartphone Is Becoming A Goliath In The Retail Industry

A study by the Times finds many retailers–including major ones like Best Buy, Nordstrom and Amazon–offer the most promotional deals for smartphones, which generate millions, if not billions, in revenue.

Amazon, for example, will make $5.37 billion in sales through mobile devices by year’s end, according to a recent survey by Internet Retailer.

Flash deal and group-buying sites are also jumping on board with mobile-exclusive deals of their own. Gilt Groupe, for example, started offering special holiday promotions on Friday, November 25 at 6 a.m.

Surprisingly, it’s bricks-and-mortar stores who will be making the biggest mobile-deal push. One of the main reasons is because they must compete against the growing consumer trend of using price comparison apps, says Time Moneyland’s Brad Turtle. These apps let you scan an item, compare retailers’ prices and read product reviews, which have become increasingly popular in the last year.

What’s funny, though, is how many retail stores started arming their salespeople with the same equipment. Reuters reports that companies like Lowe’s, Best Buy and Toys R Us gave their people smartphones of their own to research products, check rival’s prices and even make purchases.

More than 40 percent of retailers now have a policy of competing against lower online prices through mobile phones, according to the research firm RSR.

Lowe’s alone is using over 42,000 Apple iPhones and distributing them to 1,700 of their stores.

With the equipment, employees can engage customers more effectively by using iPhones to track down the same information consumers are tracking. They’ll also be able to quickly see if products are in stock, or still available on the website or at another nearby store.

Some companies are also allowing their employees to either match or beat prices that a consumer finds somewhere else on their phone—good news for the consumer.

Free Shipping On The Web Isn’t So ‘Free’ Anymore

It’s no surprise why online shopping is so popular.

“You get the item quickly, you don’t pay for shipping, you often receive better prices, and you don’t have to leave your house,” said Andrew Schrage, founder of Money Crashers.

Perhaps in response to shoppers like Schrage, businesses have been giving away free shipping with a vengeance.

Some 93 percent of stores will offer at least one free shipping deal this year, which means a six percent increase from last year. Meanwhile 30 percent of store sites will offer free shipping on Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation.

Experts like Kit Yarrow, a professor of psychology and marketing at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Calif., told Smart Money that free shipping has become an expectation. However, things don’t always don’t always pan out for consumers.

Retailers may raise the price of their products to make up for shipping costs or bar consumers from using coupons. She also warns shoppers to consider the overall package, including whether or not you can combine discounts.

Besides analyzing the overall deal, Schrage advises shoppers to stick to Web-based companies when shopping online.

“Online sites like Amazon almost ALWAYS have as cheap, and usually cheaper, prices than these retailers who also provide free shipping,” he said.

He points out that companies like Amazon even offer two-day shipping for free, and maintain great return policies that prove to be better than those of bricks-and-mortar stores.

From time to time Schrage admits you will seen an online site offer a higher retail price with free shipping. But stay away—you can score a better deal.
