Groupon Has Completely Collapsed (GRPN)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-groupon-stock-2012-4

Groupon’s stock has been absolutely crushed since the middle of February. The stock dropped another 5% today.

The bad news for shareholders is that it’s still arguably overpriced. With a $7 billion market cap, it’s trading at 3X revenue. It still has some room to fall.

The good news for shareholders is that it’s not going to zero. There’s a business in there, it just needs to find a proper valuation.

Create Your Own Bokeh Camera KitBokeh refers to blurry effects in photographs—purposely out of focus shapes that are creamy and wonderfully fuzzy. You can make your own bokeh with just some inexpensive black cardstock.

Create Your Own Bokeh Camera KitThis DIY lens hood and cap, dubbed the Circle of Confusion Shape Modifier, is similar to a previous one we’ve featured before, except this one lets you change out the “slides” or bokeh shapes easily—so you’re not stuck with just one shape. The tutorial at DIYphotography is very detailed: It tells you how to set up the grid in Photoshop or Gimp, create the squares and cutouts, and assemble it all together.

Check out the original article and the reader comments for a discussion of the techniques used to create the effects in the photos, such as setting your camera to the lowest aperture value. Enjoy making dazzling, beautiful photos!

Will Google’s Market Cap Pass Microsoft’s This Year? (GOOG, MSFT)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-googles-market-cap-has-been-closing-in-on-microsoft-2012-1

Two years ago Apple pulled off an impressive feat: Its market cap surged past Microsoft to become the most valuable company in the tech industry.

Then last year, IBM managed to slip past Microsoft to be more valuable. It’s since fallen back and Microsoft is more valuable.

Who will it be this year? Well, it could be Google. The search company is just $19 billion behind Microsoft. All it would take is Google’s stock going on a tear, and Microsoft’s fading or sitting still.

When (or if) it happens, you know Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is going to freak out. Don’t forget, he’s the guy who threw a chair and had a tantrum when Google poached one of his employees.

The Half-Life Of A YouTube Video Is 6 Days (GOOG)

A video on YouTube gets 50% of its views in the first 6 days it is on the site, according to data from analytics firm TubeMogul. After 20 days, a YouTube video has had 75% of its total views.

That’s a really short life span for YouTube videos, and it’s probably getting shorter. In 2008, it took 14 days for a video to get 50% of its views and 44 days to get 75% of its views.

Why? In the last two years, YouTube has improved its user interface, which helps videos get seen early on. Also, the world has gotten more adept at embedding and sharing videos in real-time via Twitter and Facebook. (And there’s probably more video to choose from.)

What’s this mean for publishers? For one thing, publishers should have advertising/monetization schemes ready to go for their videos right when they’re published, because the hits come early.

It also means companies should be actively uploading videos to YouTube, says David Burch, a rep at TubeMogul. He notes that major companies like the NBA have been good at getting clips on YouTube quickly. If they didn’t act fast, then they could miss an opportunity to get eyeballs.
