Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-google-vs-samsung-2012-11

Pretty insane chart from Horace Dediu at Asymco. He compares Samsung’s mobile operating income to Google’s overall operating income.

As you can see, Samsung’s mobile operating income will soon be twice as much as Google’s overall operating income. Samsung’s operating income is almost entirely because of Google’s Android.

Where The iPad Fails In Comparison To A Normal Computer (AAPL, MSFT)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-tablet-vs-desktop-2012-10

We teamed up with SurveyMonkey to find out how people use their tablets versus how they use laptops/desktop computers. As the iPad becomes more and more popular, we want to know what people feel like they can’t do with it compared to a traditional computer.

According to our survey, tablets like the iPad are most useful for surfing the web, reading news, social networking, and playing games. It’s about tied with traditional computers for email. What is a traditional computer better at? Banking, shopping, creating documents, and doing work related activities.

(Also, for what it’s worth 73% of the people that responded to the survey said their tablet was an iPad.)

When People Use Mobile Devices (AAPL, GOOG, MSFT)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-mobile-and-pc-content-2012-9

Ad company Kontera tracked data from 15,000 publishers to find out when people are using their PC versus iPhones, Android phones, and tablets, which are lumped as “mobile” in the chart below.

This chart shows for each hour of the day what percentage of total mobile and PC content is consumed. As you can see, mobile usage is strongest from 6 PM to midnight. PC usage is strongest from 11 AM to 5 PM.

What this tells us is that people are using PCs at work, and mobile gadgets at home. Sort of a duh, right? Maybe, but it suggests a big shift in what “personal computing” really means. If we’re doing mobile computing largely during our personal time, which is when we’re out of work, it means people are more likely to buy tablets than traditional PCs in the future.

The Collapse Of The Microsoft-Intel Monopoly (INTC, MSFT, AAPL, GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-personal-computing-platforms-2012-9

Here’s an awesome chart from Horace Dediu of Asymco that shows the collapse of Microsoft and Intel’s monopoly in personal computing. It’s been making the rounds today.

As you can see, Android and Apple have successfully eaten into Wintel’s marketshare. That’s not to say Microsoft is going to collapse. It has a number of successful businesses. It’s just not going to run the world like it once did.

Microsoft’s Windows Division Generated Less Revenue Than Its Servers Division (MSFT)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-microsoft-revenue-by-segement-2012-7

Here’s an incredible chart from Microsoft’s last earnings report that didn’t get the sort of attention it deserves. The Server and Tools division generated more revenue than the Windows division in the last fiscal year.

The Windows division is still much more profitable, earning $11.5 billion compared versus $7.4 billion for Servers & Tools. And one of the reasons Windows generated less revenue than Server & Tools is that Windows 7 is at the end of its run.

However, this chart is illustrative of a two big trends for Microsoft. First, while Vanity Fair wants to call it a lost decade for Microsoft, it clearly wasn’t all lost since it built a third huge new business division. Second, while people worry about the future of Windows, and whether or not it gets disrupted by iOS and Android, the truth of the matter is that Microsoft is more than just Windows.

Let’s Take A Deep Breath And Look At iPhone Sales

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-iphone-unit-sales-2012-7

Apple whiffed on earnings last night sending the stock down 5%. This has lots of people (including ourselves) freaking out about Apple’s business.

If you take a step back and just look at how the iPhone had sold in the past, last quarter wasn’t that bad. It actually, seems to have locked back into the long term growth trend.

Apple had two gigantic iPhone quarters after it altered its release schedule. That got everyone too excited, perhaps, about the size and growth rate of the iPhone business.
