Chrome OS on the cheap, but at what cost?

It’s been just over a month since Google unveiled its gorgeous and affordable $249 Samsung Chromebook only to surprise us days later with an even cheaper system, the $199 Acer C7 Chromebook. At first glance, these two laptops are very similar, both in purpose (cloud-based computing on a budget) and in specs (11.6-inch display, dual-core CPU, 2GB of RAM), but there are significant differences under the hood. Samsung’s offering achieves its svelte form factor, 6.5-hour battery life and attractive price via a fully integrated and fanless ARM-based design while Acer takes a more conservative approach — cramming standard off-the-shelf components like a 2.5-inch hard drive, small-outline memory module, mini-PCIe WiFi card, and Intel Celeron processor into a traditional netbook-like chassis. Does being $50 cheaper make up for the C7′s lack of sex appeal and short 4-hour battery life? What other compromises in performance and build quality (if any) were made to achieve this lower cost? Google just launched the latest iteration of its Chrome OS-based laptop here in San Francisco — the $249 (or £229, for those in the UK) 11.6-inch Samsung Chromebook. It’s ARM-based (fanless), 0.8-inches thick, weighs only 2.43 pounds, runs 6.5+ hours on battery, boots in under 10 seconds and supports 1080p video playback. Pre-orders start today at Amazon and PC World, and the laptop includes Google Now integration using Google Drive as a transport and comes with 100GB of free storage for two years. It will be available for sale on the Play Store and featured prominently at retailers like Best Buy, and naturally, we’re expecting this one to make a bigger splash than prior models based on the bargain bin price alone.
Under the hood, there’s a dual-core A15-based Samsung Exynos 5 Dual (5250) SoC, 2GB RAM, 16GB of built-in flash storage, WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth, all of which should act to give this Chromebook a lot more oomph compared to slower, earlier models. Other specs include a 1366 x 768 native screen resolution, a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 socket, combo headphone / mic jack, an SD card slot and a “full-size Chrome keyboard.” Hit up the links below for the nitty-gritty, or hop on past the break for a promo vid.

Aereo opens its streaming TV to Mac and Windows web browsers

If you’d wanted to watch Aereo’s unique antenna-to-internet TV streaming until today, you had to tune in from an iOS device or Roku box. That’s not a lot of choice for placeshifting, is it? A fresh update to the company’s streaming service has widened the choices considerably for New Yorkers to include all the major browsers on Macs and Windows PCs. As long as you’re using a recent version of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera or Safari, you can catch up on Ion or Telemundo while you’re checking email. About the only restrictions left are the continued lack of Android support and occasional lawsuits from traditionalist broadcasters.

We got hints from an early Geekbench result that the iPhone 5 was going to be flying. It seems that Apple’s really has worked some magic, both with iOS 6 and its custom silicon, to make the iPhone 5 absolutely blazing at crunching Javascript. Browsing on the iPhone 5 is going to be lightning quick.
AnandTech managed to grab an iPhone 5 review sample to run some quick SunSpider Javascript benchmark tests, and well, you can see for yourself below. Not only does the iPhone 5 destroy Android’s best, but it beats Intel’s Atom chips too.
A couple of caveats here, though. This browser test uses the default browser on each platform, so those of you using Chrome on Android could see faster results (let us know in the comments if you get a chance to run it). According to Intel, as this kind of processing relies heavily on the memory interface of the SoCs, its Atom could easily best chips based on the Cortex A9 spec because of memory speed issues. It seems Apple’s custom silicon has removed these kinds of memory problems, making the iPhone 5 the fastest mobile Javascript cruncher ever seen.
Hopefully the rest of the system is absolutely blazing too, because no one likes to wait around for things to happen. We all suffer from hourglass syndrome, right? [AnandTech]
Our newest offspring Gizmodo UK is gobbling up the news in a different timezone, so check them out if you need another Giz fix.

Google Chrome Now Has A Third Of The Browser Market Worldwide (GOOG)

Google Chrome lead in the browser market continues to grow.
Chrome accounted for 33.8% of the global browser market in July, an increase of more than ten percentage points from the year before, according to the latest data from StatCounter. Internet Explorer, the second most popular browser, had 32% of the market.
Google’s browser first passed Internet Explorer for a full week back in May and then took the top spot for the entire month of June.
While Chrome’s share of the market has been increasing, Internet Explorer and Firefox have been on the decline. Apple’s Safari browser has remained relatively stagnant at about 7% market share.

Google Chrome Beats Internet Explorer To Become The World’s Most Popular Browser (MSFT, GOOG, AAPL)

Google’s Chrome browser, which doesn’t come pre-installed on any computer, has leapt past Internet Explorer, which is pre-installed in over 90% of all computers, to become the most popular web browser.
This comes from StatCounter, which tracks web traffic through its own widget. It’s not a perfect data set, but it seems to be as good as any other, and most other analytics groups seem to be illustrating the same trend.
