Apple’s Weekend iPad Sales In Context

Apple says it sold three million iPad Minis and fourth generation iPads from Friday to Sunday. For some context on how impressive those sales are we’ve charted them against shipments from other tablet makers in the third quarter, using data from IDC. As you can see, only Samsung had better sales in three months than Apple had in three days.

Apple’s Mind-Blowing Margins In Context (MSFT, AAPL, GOOG)

The most important thing to come out of Apple’s earnings was the fact that its operating margins were so strong, said Goldman Sachs analyst Bill Shope.

As you can see in this chart from the always insightful Horace Dediu of Asymco, Apple’s margins are better than Microsoft, which is a software company, and Google, which is an Internet company.

Apple is a hardware company. The fact that its margins beat software companies and internet companies is mind blowing.

The Millions Of Ad Spending On Facebook In Context

Facebook’s U.S. ad spending per user is tiny, when you compare it to other big ad-reliant industries, as you can see in this chart from Nanigans, a Facebook marketing company.

This chart isn’t perfect since Facebook is just one company, and the rest of the chart is made up of entire industries. But, the essential point of this chart remains: Facebook has an opportunity to capture many more ad dollars in the future.
