How Much Physical Space Does the Internet Take Up?The internet is one of the most ethereal concepts in tech: it’s nowhere and everywhere, all at once. But if you could measure the thing, how much physical space would it take up?

Fortunately Randall Munroe of XKCD fame has answered the question in a fun way over on his What If? site. He explains:

There are a lot of ways to estimate the amount of information stored on the internet, but we can put an interesting upper bound on the number just by looking at how much storage space we (as a species) have purchased.

The storage industry produces in the neighborhood of 650 million hard drives per year. If most of them are 3.5″ drives, then that’s eight liters (two gallons) of hard drive per second.

This means the last few years of hard drive production-which, thanks to increasing size, represent a large chunk of global storage capacity-would just about fill an oil tanker. So, by that measure, the internet is smaller than an oil tanker.

Papa John's Faces $250 Million Lawsuit Over SMS SpamPapa John’s has clearly been a little over-eager with its digital promotion. Now, it’s facing a $250 million class-action lawsuit over all the spammy text messages it’s been sending you and everybody else around the US.

It’s alleged that Papa John’s sent 500,000 unwanted messages in early 2010, CNN Money reports. It gets worse: at times, customers were receiving 15 texts in a row, even in the middle of the night. Nobody needs a pizza offer that badly.

Of course, those texts were actually sent through a third-party text messaging service—in this case one called OnTime4U—so both companies will find themselves in the dock. And it could prove costly: the plaintiffs in the case are seeking damages of $500 per text. Think of all the pizza you could buy with that. [CNN Money]

YouTube Axing 60 Percent of Its Original Content ChannelsBack in January, YouTube announced that it was launching around 160 channels of fresh, original content, that it would invest in to help it compete with traditional cable and network programming. Less than a year on, it’s axing over half of them.

YouTube injected $200 million into the project, which includes channels like The Onion and Jay-Z’s Life and Times. Seems the rewards haven’t been as forthcoming as they’d like: 60 percent are being axed, and YouTube will cream off 100 percent of incoming revenue from the ones that aren’t renewed.

As for what will and won’t make the cut, All Things D reports that it’s not revenue that’s the deciding factor, but watch time of the channels instead. [All Things D via Verge]

It Would Cost 37 Billion Dollars a Year To Screen YouTube Videos


It Would Cost $37 Billion Per Year to Pre-Screen YouTube VideosLast week, we reported that a staggering 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. Now, engineer Craig Mansfield has worked out how much it would cost per year to pre-screen all that video for copyright infringements—and the answer is close to that of Google’s annual revenue.

Mansfield calculated that a team of 199,584 judges—or equally qualified individuals—would be required to watch and rule over the video, which in turn would cost $36,829,468,840. For comparison, Google’s revenue for 2011 was $37,905,000,000.

Now some bright spark has calculated that the US uses one billion gallons more gas every year than if the entire population had remained at the average weight of the 1960s. For every extra pound added to the average weight, the country uses another 39 million gallons of fuel each year.
