There Is A Serious Shortage Of Primary Care Doctors And It’s Only Getting Worse

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/there-is-a-serious-shortage-of-primary-care-doctors-and-its-only-getting-worse-2013-9

doctorApproximately 5,000 new graduates enter primary care training each year. The problem is, we need a lot more than that.

The U.S. will face a shortage of more than 90,000 primary care physicians by 2020 and 130,000 by 2025, according to nonprofit firm the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

But it gets worse. Under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, millions of formerly uninsured people will have access to health care. It’s estimated that 14 million people will be enrolled by 2014, which means the demand for physicians is crucial in the coming years. Not to mention America’s population is aging fast.

Primary care doctors already have to see more patients than non-primary doctors on a daily basis and they don’t get much time to spend with each patient, according to a new study conducted by Nerdwallet Health. They also make, on average, 65% less than non-primary care doctors, yet are required to go through similar years of higher education, completing eight years of undergraduate and graduate education and at least three years in residency, for a total time investment of more than a decade.

Physicians who work in gastroenterology, orthopedics, and radiology — the top ranked medical specialties — have an average salary of $365,000, whereas physicians who work in pediatrics, family, and internal medicine — th! e lowest ranked medical specialties — bring home around $177,000 annually.

After graduation, the median annual stipend for residents and fellows is around $55,750, yet 79% of medical school graduates acquired education debts of over $100,000 in 2012, the study found. The average medical school debt last year was $166,750.

When you consider high tuition cost, years of intense study and training, and an influx of patients primary care doctors are faced with while making considerably less money than other speciality doctors, it makes sense that medical students want to maximize their incomes by choosing a higher-paying specialty.

Below is a chart by Nerdwallet Health comparing doctor compensation with other factors, including total hours worked and weekly patient visits among the 15 most common medical specialties:

What should be done to fix this shortage problem? Should medical school take a step to encourage students to go into primary care? Please let us know in the comments section.

Viewers’ Single Most Important Future TV/Video Option? Freedom From Ads

source: http://www.marketingcharts.com/wp/television/viewers-single-most-important-future-tvvideo-option-freedom-from-ads-36375/?utm_campaign=rssfeed&utm_source=mc&utm_medium=textlink

Ericsson-Most-Important-Future-TV-Video-Options-Sept2013The TV advertising market continues to grow, both within the US and around the world. And more and more Americans are watching a greater number of online video ads. But when asked the most important service or option for how they want their future TV or video experience, a leading 10.7% share of TV viewers from around the world said they want that experience to be free of ads, according to a study from Ericsson Labs.

The study was conducted among around 15,000 respondents (1,000 per country) aged 16-59 in 15 markets: Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, UK, and the US. All respondents were required to have a broadband internet connection and watch TV/video on a weekly basis. Almost all use the internet on a daily basis.

The study results indicate that ad-free video content is more important to the future video experience than any other single service or option, including time-shifting and on-demand (9.8%), à la carte TV-/video content (7.7%), and – somewhat surprisingly – TV/video content on all devices (5.9%). Advanced functions such as accessing or watching different camera angles (2.1%) and interactive TV (2.1%) were deemed critical to the fewest number of respondents.

WhatsApp Reaches 300 Million Active Users (Statista)
WhatsApp, the over-the-top (OTT) mobile messaging app that bypasses carrier SMS fees and allows mobile users to send text messages over an internet connection, just reached 300 million active users across the globe. More interestingly, it acquired 100 million users in the past four months. Its users are also sending 11 billion messages on a daily basis. Because WhatsApp continues to grow rapidly, OTT messaging services are showing no signs of stopping. This is troublesome for carriers who look to text message fees as a significant source of revenue. Facebook Is Going To Build Its Own Search Engine! (FB, GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-search-engine-2012-9

Facebook sponsored results search

Mark Zuckerberg was refreshingly candid speaking today at TechCrunch Disrupt.

One part of his talk that’s going to draw a lot of scrutiny was when he was talking about the company’s search efforts.

Zuckerberg said that Facebook has one billion queries on a daily basis and it’s basically doing that without trying.

He then hinted that Facebook is going to start trying.

He said that search is increasingly headed towards answering people’s questions. Facebook, which has a trove of data on users, is “uniquely positioned” to deliver answers for users.

Facebook has a team of engineers working on improving the search engine.

He said, “At some point, we’ll do it.”

Google’s highly lucrative business is built on search. If Facebook could capture even a fraction of the revenue Google captures it would be a huge boon for the company’s top and bottom lines.
