This Chart Is Why A Lot Of People Think HP Is Totally Screwed (HPQ)

This week, we ran a chart showing HP’s crashing stock price since Mark Hurd was forced out of the company.

After we published the chart, a friend emailed to say, “Hurd destroyed the company. Gutted R&D, which was the cardinal sin. It was always an engineer’s company. He financialized it. And in so doing, set in motion the wheels of doom.”

From 2010, here’s a look at how R&D as a percentage of revenue fell under Hurd’s watch.

But, is the R&D budget really why HP is hosed? Probably not. Look at this chart, also from 2010:

Anything jump out in that chart?

Apple spent less on R&D than HP, Google, and Microsoft in 2009. No one is going to accuse Apple of not producing great innovative products, despite a small R&D budget.

When Hurd was pushed out, an ex-HP engineer told Joe Nocera slashes in the R&D department was, “why H.P. had no response to the iPad! . ” Apple managed to make the iPad while spending less on R&D, so we’re not sure that totally adds up.

It’s not how much you spend on R&D, it’s what comes of it.

As for the charge that Hurd “financialized” HP, well, that may be true. But, he seemed to be at least somewhat in control of where the company was going. The two CEOs since Hurd have no clue, it seems, about what to do with HP.

JC Penney Shares Are Collapsing After A Dismal Earnings Report

Shares of JC Penney are tanking over 11.5% this morning after the retailer reported earnings.

Revenue of $2.9 billion is way below estimates of $3.2 billion.

EPS of $-0.93 per share is well worse than the loss of seven cents that were expected.

And same-store sales are down 26.1%

CEO Ron Johnson offers up:

Ron Johnson, chief executive officer of jcpenney said, “While the quarter overall was challenging, the performance of jcp’s new brands and shops reinforces our conviction to transform jcpenney into a specialty department store.  Today, jcp is really a tale of two companies.  By far the largest part of our store is the old jcpenney, which continues to struggle and experience significant challenges as evidenced by our third quarter results.  However, the new jcp, centered around the shop concept, is gaining traction with customers every day and is surpassing our own expectations in terms of sales productivity which continues to give us confidence in our long term business model.”

JCPenney’s New Concept Shops Are Killing It, And Here’s Proof (JCP)

JCPenney CEO and former Apple retail chief Ron Johnson has been constantly criticized for his performance thus far in the turnaround attempt of the ailing retailer, but now, he’s got some very good news.

JCPenney’s new shops inside the department stores are rocking 20 percent higher comps than the rest of the store.

“Shops are working,” said Johnson.

What’s he most impressed with?

The Levi’s shop is his pride and joy — the one with the denim bar. It’s getting double digit comps in mens. 

“Both are doing well above what we planned,” said Johnson.

Johnson also focused on Sephora, a shop that JCPenney has actually had for a while now. He says that Sephora continues to comp in year six. In the future, he’s planning on slightly larger Sephora stores. Izod and Liz Claiborne are also doing great, said Johnson.

The in-house jcp brand is a bit more complicated. The women’s shop is doing well, said Johnson, but the mens is behind. He said that the “colors might be a bit advanced,” since JCPenney’s offering a lot of vibrant colors like purple and orange.

NBC Spoiled Missy Franklin’s Tape-Delayed Gold Medal Race Just Moments Before Airing The Race

NBC has received plenty of heat and criticism for their decisions to tape-delay a number of the more popular Olympic events. But they aren’t helping their own case when they spoil their own coverage with a promo for another show.

That’s what happened tonight when NBC was getting set to show the women’s 100 meter backstroke, an event Franklin won (will win?). The network went to commercial with a view of Franklin in the pool and the teaser “coming up, how good can Missy Franklin be tonight? The finals of the 100-back coming up.”

And from the “can’t make it up department,” NBC then showed a promo for “The Today Show” centered around Franklin celebrating her gold medal with her parents. The promo even included a shot of Franklin on the medal stand with her medal.

Gee, I wonder if she is going to win?!? Here’s the video…

Quirky Dress Designer Betsey Johnson Has Filed For Bankruptcy

Betsey Johnson LLC, retailer of quirky female fashions, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Women’s Wear Daily reports.

Betsey Johnson currently has 63 stores around the country. Up to 350 staffers could lose their jobs as the company consolidates.

The company will now set its boutiques on the back burner and focus on its mid-priced attire which is sold at Macy’s.

The shift shows the label’s transition from high-end fashion to department store fare.

So far there’s no word from Betsey herself.

Here’s what the company’s CFO told Women’s Wear Daily:

Betsey Johnson LLC’s chief financial officer Jonathan Friedman said in a release, “The decision to seek protection under chapter 11 comes after months of rigorously pursuing alternative restructuring arrangements to address Betsey Johnson LLC’s cash flow problems. After exhausting our resources and possibilities, it became apparent that neither a restructuring arrangement with a new equity investor nor a sale of the business enterprise as a going concern outside of bankruptcy was to be forthcoming. Accordingly, our board made the determination that a Chapter 11 store closing process will likely be the best way to maximize the value of the company’s assets, for the benefit of its creditors.

This ‘SHCOOL X-ING’ Sign Has Been Posted Outside A New York School For Months

There are many signs that America’s schools are crappy — and now, thanks to a spelling gaffe outside a Lower East Side high school, we are seeing that trend physically manifest itself on the sidewalks of New York City.

Yesterday, The Lo-Down’s Erin Rodriguez spotted a crossing sign outside Marta Valle High School incorrectly spelled “SHCOOL X-NG.”

Jennifer Bain and Jeane Macintosh of The New York Post picked up the story about the embarrassing spelling error, which has apparently gone unnoticed by school officials for months. 

The Post says Marte Valle officials could not be reached, but a spokesman from the Department of Transportation told the publication that the error was made by a utility provider—not the city—after construction was done on the street over the summer.  

The DOT says it is now working on correcting the mistake.

Watch This Earthquake-Proof Desk Easily Shrug Off a 2,000 Pound Block [Video]

I don’t live in a high risk area for deadly tremors, but after watching this earthquake-proof table easily survive having a 2,200 pound block dropped on it, I think I still want one for my office—just in case.

The table was designed by Ido Bruno and Arthur Brutter primarily for use in schools. Students are typically taught to hide under their desks in the event of an earthquake, but most desks aren’t designed to support the weight of all the debris were the building to collapse. Which is clearly demonstrated in this video when they drop just a 1,000 pound weight on a traditional desk and it’s immediately pancaked.

Watch This Earthquake-Proof Desk Easily Shrug Off a 2,000 Pound BlockIn addition to providing a safe haven for students, the desk’s supporting structure is designed in such a way that it also provides several escape routes depending on how debris has fallen. It’s also light enough to be lifted by just two students, and is built with durable but inexpensive materials so it’s actually affordable for a school to purchase en masse. Now it’s not available just yet, but based on these tests being conducted at the Structural Engineering department at Padua University in Italy, it shouldn’t have much trouble getting approved for sale. Netflix has made no bones about the fact that it’s competing (hard) with HBO, and it seems that the sentiment is the same on the other side. According to CNET, HBO has stopped providing Netflix with DVDs of its shows. Of course, the freedom to purchase from other legitimate resellers has enabled Netflix to keep the discs flying, but it’s no longer able to source ’em directly from the Box Office’s warehouse. The deal supposedly went into effect at the start of this year, but it’s unlikely that you’ll ever notice; as the story goes, Netflix will have to pay slightly more to procure them elsewhere, but it’s mostly a symbolic move by HBO to ruffle the feathers of Reed Hastings and co. Oh, and if you thought the same luxuries found in HBO Go would ever find its way to Netflix’s streaming department, we’d ask that you share a little of your optimism with the rest of the world.

A Look at Smartphone Search

I once owned a Blackberry.  I liked BBM, that blinking red light and being able to tell everyone that my messages were “encrypted.” That was until I owned an iPhone. Now we have all heard the debate, Mac or PC, iPhone or Blackberry, Firefox or Internet Explorer… everyone has their reasons and I have mine.

Each phone has their unique features, but no matter which device is actually better, people are continuing to buy Smartphones.

Looking on compete.com I searched the keyword “smartphone”. My search showed that the top 25 search referrals are:

Looking at the top 25 search referrals we find that Blackberry.com sees more visitors searching for smartphones, than Apple.com does. Apple.com has 100% paid search referrals for the keyword “smartphone” and Blackberry.com has 28.75% paid search referrals.

Looking at Average Site Referrals we see that Apple.com sees approximately 11 thousand site referrals and Blackberry.com sees approximately 900 thousand.

With such a large number of people searching for smartphones, the competition is as fierce as ever.

Looking at Average Stay and Pages/Visit for Apple.com we can see that people stay on the site for about 6 minutes and look at about 5 pages.

Looking at Average Stay and Pages/Visit for Blackberry.com we can see that the average stay is higher at about 8 minutes and look at about 7 pages.

Are people spending more time on Blackberry.com because there are more options? Do people know what product they want when visiting apple.com spending less time?

While I love my iPhone and have retired my Blackberry, Smartphones are the smartest option for people who want to be connected wherever they are.

40 percent of iPhone sales are enterprise, Android ‘built with a very specific focus to consumers’

It isn’t just Verizon’s Lowell McAdam with fascinating commentary at this Barclays Capital tech conference going down in New York this week. Ron Spears, who leads up AT&T’s Business Solutions division, had some notable things to say about enterprise mobility — specifically, the iPhone’s role in taking businesses to the road, a magic trick typically associated almost exclusively with BlackBerry over the past ten years. Basically, Spears says that he’s seeing extraordinary uptake on the business side with the iPhone since 2008 and the introduction of the platform’s first enterprise-focused features; in fact, he claims that “four out of every 10 sales” are to enterprise users these days and that it has all but caught up to BlackBerry for the kind of modern, tight, full-featured security that your average IT department needs. On a related note, Spears says that he hasn’t “seen the Android platform yet in the enterprise space,” but that he figures it’ll evolve over time to become “hard to ignore” to the enterprise segment. Of course, considering that AT&T has virtually no presence in the Android market at the moment, we’re not surprised that he’d take a lukewarm tack — so here’s hoping that changes fast.
