RIM’s Twitter Campaign Goes Horribly Wrong #BeBold

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/rims-twitter-campaign-goes-horribly-wrong-bebold-2012-1

RIM’s latest marketing campaign is based around a squad of cartoon characters called the Bold Team, accompanied by the #BeBold hashtag on Twitter. It wasn’t a good idea.

Why? Because the campaign is blowing up in RIM’s face. Spectacularly.

The vague hashtag, plus the cheesiness of the cartoon characters, prompted the masses to hijack #BeBold. So now, just one week after McDonald’s reminded marketers everywhere how NOT to do a Twitter campaign, RIM makes the same mistake. It’s getting ripped on by its own hashtag (via Gizmodo).

Take a look at what people are tweeting. It entirely consists of folks railing on either the cartoon, or the company as a whole:

Motorola’s Releasing Intel-Powered Androids Later This Year [Intel]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5875005/motorolas-releasing-intel+powered-androids-later-this-year

Motorola's Releasing Intel-Powered Androids Later This YearIntel’s about to get its peanut butter all over Motorola’s chocolate. And, in addition to the Reese’s Pieces, we’ll see the first Intel-powered, Android smartphone in the second half of this year.

The two companies announced today that they’ve signed on for a multi-year strategic relationship which will span multiple platforms—including tablets and phones. Specifically, Motorola hopes to employ Intel’s low power system-on-chip architecture. “With Android as the leading smartphone OS globally and advancements in computing technology we see tremendous opportunity.” Sanjay Jha, Chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility told Business wire. Intel’s new Medfield chip could to be on-board.

And, while the phones may not end up as sleek as the Intel design reference above, with the Medfield’s ability to support up to a 24MP camera and 1080p playback, Apple may have some real competition on its hands. What’s more, given that Google owns Motorola, these phones could very well have an inside track to the latest and greatest Android OS builds. [Marketwatch]

Moo.com makes business cards from your Facebook Timeline, strangely offers no Like button on its site

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/moo-business-cards-from-your-facebook-timeline/

It’s a new year, which probably means that you’re due for new business cards. And look, your card design from last year is precisely that — so last year. Moo has announced a clever new design, which allows you to “take your Facebook Timeline offline, and hand it out to new friends, contacts and potential clients.” Wildly enough, creating ‘em is as easy as tweaking your Timeline. Once you’re ready to roll, just sign in and allow Moo to access your data (cue privacy advocate yelling), check that you spelled your name right and hand over $15 for a stack of 50 cards. Once you receive ‘em, you can navigate back to the site and Like its page as a reward… oh, wait.

The social discovery site Pinterest is growing so fast, traffic is up 40x in the last six months.

That’s according to Experian Hitwise, who says that the site had 11 million visitors in the week ending Dec. 17.

Pinterest is growing as fast as Facebook was back in 2006. Evan Sharp (in the middle), a co-founder of Pinterest, used to work at Facebook on the design team.

Here’s the growth chart:

Vapor4 May Be the First Bumper Worthy of the iPhone 4

The ecosystem for the iPhone4 has begun in earnest.

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5576923/vapor4-may-be-the-first-bumper-worthy-of-the-iphone-4

Vapor4 May Be the First Bumper Worthy of the iPhone 4The iPhone 4 shatters easily, and its tiny plastic bezel offers no protection. On top of that, touching its metal rim causes interferences. The Vapor4 bumper—made of aluminum—may solve most of these design problems. And it looks great:

Of course, nothing looks as cool as the iPhone 4 on its own, but if you want to avoid the antenna problems and the shattering, you are going to need one of these. They are made of aluminum, and they have an interior liner that separates the metal from the antenna, insulating it. The manufacturer—the same who makes the beautiful Joule iPad stand—told me that their tests showed no interference whatsoever across all models of iPhone:

We basically wrapped it in an inch thick of anodized aluminum all around with our special secret liner inside, nothing impacted the reception.

We will have to test this, but it definitely is the first bumper that actually looks cool. Especially the way you put it together, with those hex screws.

The Vapor4 is not cheap, although not as expensive as the beautiful exotic wood back replacement: The Vapor4 is $80. For $100 you also get the V4Carbon, a carbon fiber back plate that will further protect the iPhone 4 fragile glass back. [Elementcase]

Symbian^3 reviewed in exquisite and ruthless detail by Eldar Murtazin

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/symbian-3-reviewed-in-exquisite-and-ruthless-detail-by-eldar-mur/

No folks, those mythical N8 review units still aren’t on our doorsteps, but we can offer you the next best thing: a thorough (we mean thorough) overview of the Symbian^3 environment that will be front and center on Nokia’s next great phone. Eldar Murtazin of mobile-review reports on everything from the sophisticated handling of contacts and caller ID pictures, through the noticeable speed improvements, past the limited utility of online widgets that display only two lines at a time, beyond the “weak spot” web browser, and all the way to Symbian’s unhealthy habit of “clinging to continuity.” It’s an enlightening read, which pulls no punches with its conclusion: Symbian^3 is an evolutionary step up from S60 5th edition, which brings nothing new to the market and offers no comparative advantages. Strong words from Eldar, paricularly when he doesn’t disclose what build of the OS he’s using; his rationale, however, is that his analysis relates to overarching design decisions and ignores software bugs and version-specific foibles. Make of that what you will.

[Thanks, scotsboyuk]
