MPA-Mag-Ad-Page-Trends-in-H1-July2013Consumer magazine print ad pages declined by 4.9% year-over-year in the first half (H1) of 2013, according to data released by the Association of Magazine Media, although rate-card ad revenues inched up by 0.4%. It was a different story for the 58 titles that measure both print and iPad advertising, for whom combined ad pages and units grew by 7%. That growth was fully attributable to a 24.5% increase in iPad ad units, which now account for almost 37% of combined ad pages and units among those 58 titles.

At this point we pretty much all know what phishing emails look like and we’re resigned to the fact that we didn’t win the Micronesian lottery. We also know that we can’t buy a machine to instantly enlarge our sexual organs no matter how much personal information we provide. It was tough but we all came together in the mid-2000s and wised up.

But “spear phishing” is a different story. The whole point is to intelligently target individuals or like-minded groups. Spear phishing banners, links and messages use personalized specifics and are designed with legitimacy in mind. Phishers do especially well if they can trick employees of a large company or members of a major organization and then capitalize on the administrative privileges of those users’ accounts. There’s been indications that Apple staged something of a comeback in the US during the fourth quarter, owing partly to an iPhone 5-related spike. ComScore’s smartphone share data for December appears to bear that out. It estimates that the Apple claimed a 36.3 percent slice of the American market in the last month of 2012: that’s a noticeable boost from 35 percent in November, and two points up since the iPhone 5’s September arrival. Android remained on top at 53.4 percent, but it was once again unusually static, edging down from highs earlier in the year. Other platforms took their usual blows, although there’s no doubt some hopes for revival.

Just don’t anticipate looking for overall cellphone market share. ComScore has switched to focusing on smartphones, and it’s telling a different story than we’ve seen in the past. When only smartphones count, Samsung’s December share left it in second place, at 21 percent — still an increase over prior months, but not as large as Apple’s 36.3 percent. The biggest surprise is LG’s rise to 7.1 percent and fifth place, quite possibly due to the Optimus G and Nexus 4. Enough shifted that the market may be even less recognizable in 2013, for better or worse.

2 million more streaming subscribers worldwide, $8 million net income

Netflix saw a return to profitability and more than half a million new US subscribers in the second quarter of this year, and it’s now announced that it’s added a full two million more streaming members worldwide for the third quarter. That brings the company’s global base of streaming subscribers to 29 million, 25.1 million of which are in the US. It’s also announced another bump in profits to $8 million in net income, with global revenue of $905 million. It’s unsurprisingly a different story when it comes to DVD subscriptions in the US, however, with the company reporting a drop from 9.24 million total subscribers in Q2 to 8.61 million in Q3.

In terms of usage, Netflix says that its streaming members have now consumed over three billion hours of content, and that TV shows now account for about two thirds of that viewing activity. The company has also reiterated its commitment to original programming in its letter to shareholders, although it notes that commitment comes with some front-loaded expenses that will result in negative free cash flow for the next “several quarters” beginning with Q4. The company further adds that it believes “investment in originals is wise, and we will evaluate the performance of the slate next year to determine at what level we should fund additional original.” You can find the full letter and all the numbers at the source link below.

Google is The Least Diversified Business In Tech (GOOG, AAPL, MSFT, EBAY)

We love this chart from Dan Frommer at SplatF.

He calls it the “Eggs In One Basket” index, because it charts out the largest source of revenue as a percentage for all the major tech companies. (Profits would be a different story altogether.)

Google gets over 90% of its revenue from one source: Advertising. The next closest is Amazon with product sales. But, Amazon’s product sales are a mix of goods, so it’s not exactly the same as relying on just advertising.

For now, this isn’t a big problem for Google. The online ad market is still growing, and Google can capture a lot of the market. But, if things were to change, or advertising were to slow down, then look out.

What’s incredible about this chart is how diverse Microsoft is from a sales perspective. Its most dominant business group, Office, only accounts for 30% of sales. Read more on the chart from Frommer here →
