NASA goes open source with code portal for agency projects

NASA is consolidating it efforts in open source software and offering the world an easier way to peruse its projects by launching code.nasa.gov. The current version offers a simple directory of open-sourced projects being developed by the agency and points of contacts for each (along with details and a download link, of course). There are two more phases of development planned — first is to roll out a forum system, then an ambitious full-fledged platform for tracking, hosting and planning the various pieces of software created by the government’s space agency. We oftentimes hear raw numbers of apps bandied about in mobile OS comparisons, but we rarely get any idea of just how many developers are behind the scenes working for each platform. This is the void of knowledge filled by AppStore HQ today, who have gone to their dev directory — claimed to be a complete listing of all 55,000+ coders whose work is currently available for consumption in the Apple App Store or Android Market — and stacked them into neat piles of Apple, Google and Gapple programmers. It’s immediately apparent that single-platform development is the norm (with Apple holding the predictable edge), but AppStore HQ also provides a list of some of the most well known (and well funded) apps doing the cross-platform dance, and suggests that a movement is afoot toward making software available for both sets of users. Then again, the BNET article below points out the difficulties faced by smaller outfits, who might struggle to find the resources required to port their content over and maintain the skills required to be multi-platform, resulting in them sticking to one environment, irrespective of what allures others might throw their way. Give them both a read, we say.

How-To View Gmail for iPad on Your Regular Computer – Chrome and Safari
Type the following User Agent String according to the screen shots for Chrome and Safari
Mozilla/5.0(iPad; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B314 Safari/531.21.10
For Safari (see screenshots below)
Go to Prefrences -> Advanced Tab
– make sure “Show Develop menu in menu bar” is checked
Go to Develop -> User Agent -> Other
- in the popup window, copy and paste the User Agent string from above and click OK
Log into Gmail — voila
For Chrome
Go to Windows Start Menu -> Run -> Type “cmd” and click enter to get to a command line window
- from your current directory you need to cd (change directory) into the directory where your chrome installation resides; for example C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR NAME]\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application>
- once in this directory, you type chrome.exe -user-agent=”Mozilla/5.0(iPad; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B314 Safari/531.21.10″
- once the application launches, log into Gmail — voila
