LinkedIn’s Ultimate Plan Is To ‘Map Out The Underpinnings Of The Global Economy’

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/future-of-linkedin-video-2012-11

LinkedIn has come along way from being just an online resume tool or a social network, with its news updates and discussion features.

At our IGNITION conference this week, we heard about the company’s most ambitious plans yet from its CEO Jeff Weiner

LinkedIn wants to become a sort of an economic tool that will be able to “map out the underpinnings of the global economy.”

“Imagine a digital representation of every economic opportunity in the world — temporary or full-time jobs,” Weiner told Business Insider editor-in-chief Henry Blodget. “Imagine all the skills required to obtain those roles would be digitally represented.”

Find out what LinkedIn may be capable of in the future below:

Here’s The Truth About That Gallup Poll That Shows A Huge Lead For Mitt Romney

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/nate-silver-on-the-gallup-poll-showing-huge-lead-for-mitt-romney-2012-10

nate silver

Worried Obama fans will be happy to read Nate Silver’s latest post about Gallup, the polling firm that has Mitt Romney with a shocking 7 point lead among likely voters.

Silver’s post is broken down into two parts. The first is a technical discussion of how Gallup fits into his own model (which still gives Obama a 70% chance of winning the election). The second part talks about Gallup’s reliability.

The basic gist is two fold. One, when Gallup is far apart form other polls, Gallup is usually wrong. The second is that Gallup’s history of Presidential tracking is very odd, and prone to huge swings that don’t show up in the results of other pollsters.

Here are a few examples he cites:

  • In 2008, Gallup put Obama 11 points ahead of McCain on election eve. Other polls averaged an Obama lead of 7 points. The other polls were correct.
  • In 2000, Gallup put George W. Bush a stunning 16 points ahead of Al Gore in August.
  • Then later in 2000, in September, it put Al Gore up by 10 points.
  • Then in October 2000, George W. Bush was back up by 13 points. No other pollster had swings remotely this wild.
  • In 1996 at one point, Bill Clinton was up by 25 points over Bob Dole. And that was just 4 days apart from Clinton’s 9-point lead. A ridiculous swing.

Bottom line: Gallup swings wildly and it frequently has results not in line with other pollsters.

Co-Founder Paul Sciarra Says Why He’s Leaving Pinterest

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/paul-sciarra-sleaving-pinterest-2012-4

Ben Silbermann Evan Sharp Paul Sciarra Pinterest

Late last night, Pinterest co-founder Paul Sciarra wrote a blog post confirming he would be leaving his day-to-day role at Pinterest. He’ll remain an advisor to the company.

His post reads a lot like Naveen Selvadari’s, when he unhappily departed Foursquare a few weeks ago.

“After lots of reflection and plenty of discussion with Ben and others, I’ve decided that now is a good time for me to step down formally from day-to-day involvement,” Sciarra writes. “Of course, I’ll continue to be there for the company:  now, as an advisor, an owner, and — as always — a dedicated pinner.”

Sciarra says he’ll be joining Andreessen Horowitz, the lead investor in Pinterest’s $27 million round last fall, as an entrepreneur in residence.

Create Your Own Bokeh Camera KitBokeh refers to blurry effects in photographs—purposely out of focus shapes that are creamy and wonderfully fuzzy. You can make your own bokeh with just some inexpensive black cardstock.

Create Your Own Bokeh Camera KitThis DIY lens hood and cap, dubbed the Circle of Confusion Shape Modifier, is similar to a previous one we’ve featured before, except this one lets you change out the “slides” or bokeh shapes easily—so you’re not stuck with just one shape. The tutorial at DIYphotography is very detailed: It tells you how to set up the grid in Photoshop or Gimp, create the squares and cutouts, and assemble it all together.

Check out the original article and the reader comments for a discussion of the techniques used to create the effects in the photos, such as setting your camera to the lowest aperture value. Enjoy making dazzling, beautiful photos!

Doing Social Marketing in Pharma and other Heavily Regulated Industries

http://bit.ly/3XsK5j

Excerpt:

Conventional wisdom would probably say that social marketing is impossible in industries like financial services, pharmaceutical, and healthcare due to heavy regulations and requirements for disclosure. More specifically, in the pharmaceutical industry there exists a regulation that requires companies to report “adverse events” to the Federal Drug Administration within 72 hours of “hearing” it. At first glance, this single regulation could render most forms of online marketing — which are based on two-way communications — to be out of bounds; especially social media, where people talk online.

the brilliance of its simplicity has irked social media pundits and experts – “why didn’t I think of that first?”

And if marketing campaigns are supposed to drive traffic, it drove traffic.

If viral campaigns are supposed to drive chatter and discussion, it did.

If social marketing is supposed to drive social actions (like friending or becoming a fan on Facebook) it did.

and on top of all that, they are getting free consulting from all social marketing experts, gurus, pundits, specialists, etc.

pro or con, this experiment will tell Skittles and their agency what worked and what didn’t and next-up, they’ll do more of what worked, thank you very much.
