Disney considering 28-day rental window, because ‘On Stranger Tides’ was that good

That sound you can hear is the studios dashing around as they look for a new scapegoat. Disney’s got Redbox and Netflix in its sights as it declares plans to impose a 28-day window before it’ll make its titles available for rental. Despite conceding that the studio hadn’t seen any impact on overall DVD sales, CEO Bob Iger pointed to a 16 percent drop in quarterly revenue compared to 2010 as the motivation. It’s also collecting splinters in its backside as it watches to see how well digital locker service UltraViolet fares with consumers before committing to join the program. Of course, given the legitimacy of First Sale Doctrine, it’s possible Redbox will do as its done with Warner titles and just buy ‘em at retail — as long as it can cover its costs as it does so.

Verizon and Redbox team up to launch streaming and physical media service later this year

It once was a rumor but now it’s real: Verizon and Redbox are joining forces on what is said to be the “best of both worlds” — a service that will offer both physical media and streaming content for subscribers. Details are slim at this point but the supposed “Project Zoetrope” will offer DVD and Blu-ray media in addition to on-demand streaming plus downloadable content. The Netflix-like service will be launching in the second half of this year and, while “multi-platform” support for “devices” is mentioned, it’s not stated whether any of those will be non-Verizon. Though, Big Reds’ claims that it will “erase all technological boundaries” does make us slightly optimistic. Still, we’ll have to wait a few more months to know for sure.

conventional TV still rules, but online viewing is skyrocketing

2011′s come and gone, but Nielsen’s media report on the year remains. The latest figures from the year that was have been published, and conventional television is still riding a wave of popularity. We’re told that 290 million Statesiders are still ogling at least one television, with around one in three American homes (35.9 million for the mathematicians) owning four or more of the things. Across the wire, some 211 million Americans are online, with a staggering 116 million aged 13 and up accessing the mobile web. Other figures include 253 million DVD players owned, 162 million game consoles, 129 million DVRs and 95 million satellite subscribers. There’s also some 111 million people watching timeshifted programming, and Netflix itself has four times the average viewing time per person, per month compared to the boob tube. Concerned about mobile? Android’s US market share (again, according to Nielsen) is pegged at 43 percent, while the iPhone has 28 percent and RIM’s BlackBerry OS claims 18 percent. The Digital Living Room Isn’t Here Yet (NFLX, AAPL)

Despite all the hype around Netflix streaming, and Apple’s iTunes movie store, the fact of the matter is that the physical disc is still the king of home entertainment, Dan Frommer at SplatF reports.
As you can see in the chart below, digital streaming/sales only accounted for 19% of the home entertainment market in the third quarter. The rest of sales comes from DVD/Blu-ray discs.
As Frommer points out, this means there’s still plenty of room for growth for Netflix, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, and others to attack the market.

While its movie rental rivals Netflix and Blockbuster have struggled for varying reasons recently, it seemed like Redbox could be just the ticket for thrifty renters. That may be tougher now that it has announced Monday we’ll see a slight increase in pricing for DVD rentals, from $1 to $1.20, citing increased debit card fees. So far, nightly pricing for Blu-ray discs ($1.50) and videogames ($2) is staying the same, but with studios already pushing for longer rental delays, there’s fewer safe ports or those pursuing cheap, current movies. On the conference call, executives floated the idea of using the first sale doctrine to buy and rent retail discs if necessary. Overall, as seen above Redbox’s share of the disc rental market rose last quarter, while there’s still no word on plans to jump into online streaming.

Reed Hastings’ Netflix spinoff isn’t about DVD success, it’s about hedging the stream

If you’ve just casually glanced over the mass reactions to Reed Hastings’ decision to split the DVD-by-mail business of Netflix into its own brand and company, you’ve probably been duped into thinking that it’s the second questionable move that the world’s most famed movie delivery service has made this year. But is it? Is a man who turned a red envelope into a symbol of near-immediate gratification really a moron? Did he really just bury the company he worked tirelessly to create? I highly, highly doubt it. Knee-jerk reactions are always fun to watch, but they’re rarely on-point. As with most things in life, the truth usually resides somewhere in betwixt the extremes. And in the case of Qwikster — the DVD-by-mail service that precisely no one asked for — the truth is hiding in exactly the place that Reed said it’d be: the future.
