Pearson buys a small stake in Nook Media, wants a fast track for educational ebooks

Publishers often want to work closely with e-book outlets — possibly a little too closely — but it’s rare that they involve themselves directly. Pearson is taking that uncommon step by making a 5 percent, $89.5 million investment in Nook Media, the joint venture between Barnes & Noble and Microsoft. Some of the reasoning won’t be made public until Barnes & Noble provides holiday sales results on January 3rd, but Pearson is clear that it’s furthering its online education plans: it wants Nook Media’s distribution skills to make a “seamless and effective experience for students.” Just when we’ll see this harmony is still up in the air, though. Nook Media has yet to outline what Microsoft’s partnership means for e-books and e-readers, let alone how Pearson factors in. We’re not expecting a sea change until companies start speaking up.

The Explosion In Kindle Book Sales (AMZN)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-kindle-books-sold-2012-9

Here’s a very cool chart Amazon flashed at today’s Kindle event. It shows how quickly sales of Kindle books have grown in comparison to physical book sales.

We don’t get any absolute numbers, so we’re missing part of the picture, but it’s pretty safe to assume Amazon sells a lot of physical books. And its e-book sales have blown away physical book sales.

Chart from The Verge’s live blog.

Scholastic enters the e-book fray with Storia and 1,000 children’s stories

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/07/scholastic-enters-the-e-book-fray-with-storia/

Between Google Books, iBooks, Nook, Kindle, Kobo, Sony… you’d figure the e-book field was crowded enough, right? Well, if you’re specifically in the market for children’s stories, things might look a little less packed. We guess that’s why Scholastic is attempting to enter the fray with Storia, an e-reading app and store designed for kids. As part of a massive digitization effort, the company has launched Storia in beta for Windows and the iPad, alongside a market of over 1,000 titles. By the time it officially launches in the fall Scholastic hopes to have a fully stocked digital library of over 2,000 books loaded with interactive features. You can download the beta now with five free e-books by hitting up the more coverage link.
