JC Penney Shares Are Collapsing After A Dismal Earnings Report

JC Penney

Shares of JC Penney are tanking over 11.5% this morning after the retailer reported earnings.

Revenue of $2.9 billion is way below estimates of $3.2 billion.

EPS of $-0.93 per share is well worse than the loss of seven cents that were expected.

And same-store sales are down 26.1%

CEO Ron Johnson offers up:

Ron Johnson, chief executive officer of jcpenney said, “While the quarter overall was challenging, the performance of jcp’s new brands and shops reinforces our conviction to transform jcpenney into a specialty department store.  Today, jcp is really a tale of two companies.  By far the largest part of our store is the old jcpenney, which continues to struggle and experience significant challenges as evidenced by our third quarter results.  However, the new jcp, centered around the shop concept, is gaining traction with customers every day and is surpassing our own expectations in terms of sales productivity which continues to give us confidence in our long term business model.”

Facebook posts $59 million net loss in fiscal Q3, touts 1.01 billion active users

Facebook Mark Zuckerberg

The bloom is slightly off the rose for Facebook. After a banner first post-IPO quarter, it’s recording a net loss in its fiscal third quarter of $59 million despite its revenue climbing to $1.26 billion — a big swing that the company is blaming on payroll tax tweaks and income taxes, which becomes clearer when you learn that the company posted a $311 million profit before factoring in standard accounting practices. Facebook hasn’t said exactly what had the biggest impact, although its closing the Instagram deal wouldn’t have helped matters. Still, the company isn’t glum about its prospects: following an earlier mention of the milestone by founder Mark Zuckerberg, the earnings report touts that there are over 1.01 billion active Facebook users who check in at least once a month, over 604 million of which were mobile. Between a reworked iOS app, a freshened Facebook Messenger and new ad-friendly SDKs, the social network is bracing for a potential bonanza ahead.

Microsoft’s Windows Division Generated Less Revenue Than Its Servers Division (MSFT)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-microsoft-revenue-by-segement-2012-7

Here’s an incredible chart from Microsoft’s last earnings report that didn’t get the sort of attention it deserves. The Server and Tools division generated more revenue than the Windows division in the last fiscal year.

The Windows division is still much more profitable, earning $11.5 billion compared versus $7.4 billion for Servers & Tools. And one of the reasons Windows generated less revenue than Server & Tools is that Windows 7 is at the end of its run.

However, this chart is illustrative of a two big trends for Microsoft. First, while Vanity Fair wants to call it a lost decade for Microsoft, it clearly wasn’t all lost since it built a third huge new business division. Second, while people worry about the future of Windows, and whether or not it gets disrupted by iOS and Android, the truth of the matter is that Microsoft is more than just Windows.

Barnes & Noble looks to sell publishing arm, keeps the other to hold a Nook Tablet

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/04/barnes-and-noble-looks-to-sell-publishing-arm-keeps-the-other-to/

In a sign of ever shifting priorities in the ole book business, Nook’s papa is reportedly looking to sell its publishing unit, Sterling Publishing. According to the Wall Street Journal, B&N acquired Sterling in 2003, ramping up its publishing efforts after more than 30 years in the business. News of a possible sale follows last month’s Q2 earnings report that saw a $6.6 million net loss for the bookseller. That same quarter, the company’s Nook business took an 85 percent leap forward, landing it a $220 million value. Barnes & Noble has yet to comment.

Cablevision reports Q3 earnings, sees profit fall by 65 percent, drop in video subscribers

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/31/cablevision-reports-q3-earnings-sees-profit-fall-by-65-percent/

It’s safe to say that Q3 2011 probably won’t be remembered as Cablevision‘s finest. According to the provider’s latest earnings report, profits declined by a full 65 percent over the year, with net income plunging to $39.3 million this quarter, compared with the $112.1 million it raked in during the third quarter of 2010. The company also reported a loss of 19,000 video subscribers during Q3, though it added 17,000 broadband customers and 38,000 telephone subscribers. Total customers, however, declined by 15,000 over the past three months. Revenue, meanwhile, increased by eight percent to $1.7 billion, though the New York-area operator lost about $16 million to Hurricane Irene — not to mention all those legal fees. Smell that? That’s a big platter of PR, sitting right there after the break.

Redbox’s $1 per night DVD rentals jump to $1.20 October 31st, Blu-ray and games stay the same

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/27/redboxs-1-per-night-dvd-rentals-jump-to-1-20-october-1st-blu/

While its movie rental rivals Netflix and Blockbuster have struggled for varying reasons recently, it seemed like Redbox could be just the ticket for thrifty renters. That may be tougher now that it has announced Monday we’ll see a slight increase in pricing for DVD rentals, from $1 to $1.20, citing increased debit card fees. So far, nightly pricing for Blu-ray discs ($1.50) and videogames ($2) is staying the same, but with studios already pushing for longer rental delays, there’s fewer safe ports or those pursuing cheap, current movies. On the conference call, executives floated the idea of using the first sale doctrine to buy and rent retail discs if necessary. Overall, as seen above Redbox’s share of the disc rental market rose last quarter, while there’s still no word on plans to jump into online streaming.

Check below for parent company Coinstar’s full Q3 earnings report plus a FAQ that helpfully points out this is Redbox’s first increase in eight years and that discs reserved online will still be just $1 for the first night through November. The actual email customers are receiving is included after the break.
