This ‘SHCOOL X-ING’ Sign Has Been Posted Outside A New York School For Months

school crossing This SHCOOL X ING Sign Has Been Posted Outside A New York School For Months

There are many signs that America’s schools are crappy — and now, thanks to a spelling gaffe outside a Lower East Side high school, we are seeing that trend physically manifest itself on the sidewalks of New York City.

Yesterday, The Lo-Down’s Erin Rodriguez spotted a crossing sign outside Marta Valle High School incorrectly spelled “SHCOOL X-NG.”

Jennifer Bain and Jeane Macintosh of The New York Post picked up the story about the embarrassing spelling error, which has apparently gone unnoticed by school officials for months.

The Post says Marte Valle officials could not be reached, but a spokesman from the Department of Transportation told the publication that the error was made by a utility provider—not the city—after construction was done on the street over the summer.

The DOT says it is now working on correcting the mistake.

How Apple’s Business Completely Changed

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-apples-business-completely-changed-2012-1

What a difference a few years makes. Four years ago, Apple analysts fretted over iPod shipments and computer sales when an earnings call rolled around. All the early chatter is now focused on whether surging iPhone and iPad sales will even be enough to meet soaring expectations.

The iPad, only a rumor two years ago, accounted for 24% of revenue last quarter. The iPhone, meanwhile, has jumped from 10% of revenue at the beginning of 2008 to 39% last quarter–and nearly 50% at the beginning of last year. With the tablet market still in its infancy and huge opportunities still available in mobile, the shift in Apple’s revenues has only just begun. All of which should futher underline the changing nature of their business: Apple is essentially a mobile computing company.

Which is not to say the rest of the company isn’t growing. Mac shipments were up 20.7% year-over-year in the fourth quarter, according to Gartner–even as the rest of the PC market fell 5.9%. It’s just that they have not kept up with the astronomic growth of the company’s mobile products.

Fulfill Your Dinosaur-Riding Fantasies for Only Fifty Bucks [Dinosaurs]

medium ec1f423c8472c2f3aeb92e458df182ff Fulfill Your Dinosaur Riding Fantasies for Only Fifty Bucks [Dinosaurs]So far science has completely failed to deliver a real Jurassic Park. Hate to be the one to tell you this, but you’ll never actually ride a Tyrannosaurus rex. Luckily, the geniuses at Dinoprints are really good at Photoshop.

For $50, Dinoprints will plop an image you upload onto an illustration of a huge prehistoric beast and print it out for you as a two by three foot poster. Dinoprints takes this business very seriously. The company provides detailed instructions on precisely how to take photos so the final product looks as real as possible, and the prints are supposedly rendered using the latest 3-D technology. If a T. rex doesn’t quite strike your fancy, you can also choose to ride a Spinosaurus or a wooly mammoth.

They should make a $5 Facebook-photo-size version. You know you’d buy the hell out of that. [Dinoprints via Nerd Approved]

Encrypting Your Hard Drive No Longer Works Against Federal Prosecution [Law]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5878709/encrypting-your-hard-drive-no-longer-works-against-federal-prosecution

medium 39f3c99eafaab4ac65d201fe52ff05eb Encrypting Your Hard Drive No Longer Works Against Federal Prosecution [Law]Sometimes common “street smarts” fail you. Like when you ask the guy who’s selling you drugs if he’s a cop. Or when you encrypt your hard drive and refuse to unlock it for prosecutors while citing the self-incriminating clause of the Fifth Amendment.

A federal court judge has just ruled that being forced to decrypt one’s hard drive during prosecution does not violate the defendants’s Fifth Amendment rights. The ruling stems from a case against Ramona Fricosu, who is charged with mortgage fraud. She has refused to decrypt the contents of her hard drive arguing that doing so would require her to essentially testify against herself.

Nuh-uh, said judge Robert Blackburn, citing an earlier ruling against one Sebastien Boucher. In that case, the courts decided that, while Boucher’s encryption password was certainly protected, the information on his drive could be considered evidence in the case and was therefore not subject to the same liberties.

“I find and conclude that the Fifth Amendment is not implicated by requiring production of the unencrypted contents of the Toshiba Satellite M305 laptop computer,” Blackburn wrote in his opinion today. He also cited the All Writs Act, a 1789 statute, could be invoked as well to force Fricosu’s compliance.

Friscosu has until February 21 to comply or face contempt of court charges. Geez, it’s getting to the point that your secrets are better left on microfilm in pumpkin patches rather than on your hard drive. [CNet via The Verge]

Comcast’s extra ads ruin NFC championship game conclusion in some areas

comcastcommercial Comcasts extra ads ruin NFC championship game conclusion in some areas
It wasn’t just RIM that had designs on the limelight during the football action last night. Comcast commercials appeared over the NFC Championship game last night, thoughtfully playing over the climax of the match ‘twixt the Giants and the 49ers. Frustrated fans who missed out on parts of the fourth quarter and overtime promptly began voicing dissent on the company’s support forums. The Washington Post has a quote from spokesperson Amiee Metrick indicating the problems were due to a possible “equipment failure” at a local Fox affiliate, WTTG, resulting in the ill-timed ads reported in Washington D.C. We’ve heard that of customers receiving a $10 credit and an apology, but it seems unlikely to soothe the brow of those — like the person who recorded video of the incident you can see after the break — thinking of switching to FiOS.

Update: We’ve received a response from Comcast (included after the break), and updated the post to clarify the apparent breakdown was at local Fox affiliate WTTG.

[Thanks, John]

Teenage Engineering introduces Oplab musical prototyping platform

After finally getting the OP-1 up for order last January, Teenage Engineering is getting its second product to market — Oplab. The latest offering is meant to compliment its slick synth, but we can see plenty people falling in love with it on its own. The Oplab is a tinker kit and DIY platform, akin to Arduino or Microsoft’s .NET Gadgeteer, but designed explicitly for generating and manipulating sound. The main board, which retails for $299, is home to a trio of USB ports (two of them hosts), three MIDI connections (one in, one out and one sync) and a pair of CV in and CV out jacks. There’s also a bank of switches for changing settings and a host of connectors for plugging in various sensors. The Swedish company is offering a number of add-ons for $49 apiece: an accelerometer (Flip), a piezo microphone (Tap) and a pressure sensor (Poke). Strangely enough, there’s also a $149 a sneaker that has a rubber pouch that you can slip one of the aforementioned sensors into. Hit up the source link for more details and to order yours now.

Google, MIT bestow App Inventor to the unwashed masses

googleappinventor 1327344662 Google, MIT bestow App Inventor to the unwashed masses

Google must be feeling generous: it donated Sky Map to undeserving armchair astronomers and it’s letting the great unwashed get at its App Inventor development platform. The software toolset was cooked up in partnership with MIT: a web-based interface that lets anyone build Android apps without getting elbows-deep in code. Those Massachusetts king-geeks won’t be accepting submissions just yet, however: it’s still got to work out how it’s going to deploy the public server and foster a “robust and active open-source project” under its new name: the moderately unimaginative MIT App Inventor.

Apple’s REAL Earnings Expectations (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-apples-real-earnings-expectations-2012-1

Apple consistently releases comically low guidance, then obliterates it. For the last six quarters, Apple has beaten its guided EPS by 38%, and revenue by 16%.

If the trend holds, Apple will report $12.86 in EPS, and $42.9 billion in revenue. That would blow away the Street’s expectation of $10.07 EPS, and $38.76 billion.

Twitter Just Acquired A Huge Anti-Spam Startup

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-dasient-2012-1

dasient Twitter Just Acquired A Huge Anti Spam Startup

Twitter has acquired security startup Dasient, a company that specializes in fighting spam and malware.

The Dasient team will be plugged into Twitter’s “revenue engineering” group as Twitter monetizes with self-serve ads, reports TechCrunch.

In terms of the size of the team this acquisition was a large one, said TechCrunch’s sources.

It could be a match made in heaven — the most likely scenario seems that Twitter wants to protect its self-serve ad product from being used as a vehicle for spam.

With Dasient being well-versed in anti-spam and anti-malware efforts, it could be just what Twitter needs to maintain the product.
