You can’t deny Mike Bloomberg’s often coming up with different ways to involve New Yorkers in tech-related bits. On this occasion, Mayor Bloomberg & Co. have introduced a novel way for citizens of The Big Apple — and others who plan on making the move — to find jobs in the technology sector. Dubbed “Made in New York Digital Map,” the service aims to make it easier for folks to see which tech companies are seeking engineers, designers, developers, etc. At the moment there’s more than 325 outfits looking for new hires, with over “thousands of jobs” being up for grabs. Mayor Bloomberg says this is only the beginning and he’s encouraging startups to set up shop here in the City, as he believes this “is the place to be if you’re a growing tech startup.” You can take a tour of the Digital Map now via the source link below.

adobe muse Adobe Muse is ready to let you design websites without the coding headaches for $15 a month

If you’ve been looking to get that web project off the ground but despise the idea of coding it, Adobe’s recently announced web design tool has just landed. Muse, the program that allows you to design websites without having to get your hands dirty with HTML5 is now available. The kit behaves more like a layout program (like InDesign) instead of a web publishing / programming tool, allowing those who are more design-minded to feel right at home. As you might expect, the software is available with an annual $49.99 per month Creative Cloud subscription alongside CS6 heavyweights like Photoshop and Illustrator. If Muse is all you’re after, you can snag it alone for a $24.99 month-to-month fee or $14.99 for a twelve-month commitment. Need to see it in action before you open your wallet? No worries. Hit the coverage link below for a look at what the application can do.

Audi, GM, others unite on 20-minute EV charging standard for green drivers in a rush

Fast-charging an EV isn’t new in itself, but deciding on a standard for it is. Which is why we’re glad to hear that Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, GM, Porsche and Volkswagen have all agreed to a common format for their EV charging ports, the not-very-elegantly-titled DC Fast Charging with a Combined Charging System. Together, the automakers are promising a consistent way to power up a car within 15 to 20 minutes, all without breaking a current Type 1 AC charging implementation. The new format will be demoed at the Electric Vehicle Symposium 26 in Los Angeles starting May 6. Just be aware that your first-generation Focus Electric won’t be certain to use the newly universal technology: the first cars to tout the new plug won’t be at dealerships until 2013, and the European vehicle association ACEA is only guaranteeing that charging stations on the continent will be using the DC Fast Charging system by 2017. Check after the break for a further look at the port.

Amazon has had a content development division for some time but today it’s announced plans to expand from just movies to developing (and distributing, via its Instant Video service) original comedy and children’s series. The new focus follows the competition like Netflix and Hulu which have both dived headlong into developing original TV show-style content that mirrors the content consumers seem to gravitate towards on streaming services. According to the press release Amazon Studios is willing to option one “promising project” per month for $10k and pay $55k to a creator if their series is selected for distribution. Submissions of 22-minute pilot scripts for comedies and 11-minute pilot scripts for children’s shows are being accepted, which Amazon will either option within 45 days or the creator can choose between pulling it back and leaving it up for community feedback. There’s more info at the site or in the press release after the break, but just remember: if we see any series picked up about dashingly handsome tech bloggers and the fast-paced lives they lead, we’re coming for our cut.

We’ll forgive you if you failed to take MIT up on its offer take its courses for free when it rolled out its MITx online learning platform last year. However, Harvard took notice of its efforts, and has joined MIT online to form the edX platform and offer courses and content for free on the web. There’s no word on the available subjects just yet, but video lessons, quizzes and online labs will all be a part of the curriculum, and those who comprehend the coursework can get a certificate of mastery upon completion. edX won’t just benefit those who log on, either, as it’ll be used to research how students learn and how technology can be used to improve teaching in both virtual and brick and mortar classrooms. The cost for this altruistic educational venture? 60 million dollars, with each party ponying up half. The first courses will be announced this summer, and classes are slated to start this fall. Want to know more? Check out the future of higher education more fully in the PR and video after the break.

New York Times sees higher circulation numbers, digital paywall smiles knowingly

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/01/new-york-times-higher-circulation-digital/

Given how aggressively The New York Times pushes its digital packages — we’ve long since dropped our subscription yet are still bombarded with offers — you’d hope the paper was at least seeing some results. Well, never fear: it is. A report by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) found that the Times has seen a healthy increase in circulation, with the Sunday edition selling 2,003,247 copies (up 50 percent from last year) and the weekday editions racking in an average of 1,586,757 (up 73 percent). The ABC attributes much of this gain to the NYT’s addition of digital access to paper subscriptions, and we’re sure the paywall, which limits non-subscribers to just ten free articles a month, has something to do with it, too.

Nokia could sell luxury Vertu brand to VC firm for $265 million

As much as it’d be interesting to see Windows Phone running on a $21,000 gold-plated cigar lighter, that’s probably never going to happen. According to the UK’s Financial Times, Nokia has been trying to hive off its luxury Vertu brand for months already, and has finally found a suitor with the right cash / sense ratio. Although still far from a done deal, we’re told that venture capitalist firm Permira is willing to contribute up to $265 million to Nokia’s needy coffers — which might sound like a lot, but is mere costume jewelry to a manufacturer that just lost $1.7 billion.

Two-thirds of Americans unwilling to spend over $50 a month on mobile data, says Parks Associates

att 4 25 Two thirds of Americans unwilling to spend over $50 a month on mobile data, says Parks Associates

In a recent report titled Mobile Data and Applications, research outfit Parks Associates found that a large chunk of Stateside consumers aren’t willing to pay more than $50 per month for a mobile data plan. What’s also interesting here — but not surprising — is the study shows nearly 50 percent of smartphone users are completely oblivious to the amount of data they’re consuming every month. Parks Associates says this highlights the “risk” networks like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are taking by making the transition from all-you-can-have to those tiered data plans we’re so fond of. The firm’s Mobile Research Director, Harry Wang, sees this as a necessity for carriers, though, expressing that “moving mobile users to usage-based plans will be difficult and painful, but changes are necessary for operators to maintain revenues.” So, are you part of the two-thirds keeping bits under 50 bucks? Let your voice be heard in the comments below.

Friendster reborn as a gaming site, wishes Facebook cared

friendster Friendster reborn as a gaming site, wishes Facebook cared

Friendster’s as good as dead to the western world (it hasn’t really crossed our radar since 2005), but Forbes reports that the site is still huge in Southeast Asia — though not for the reasons you might think. It was the original social network when in launched in 2002, but its acquisition by e-payment provider MOL Global in 2009 led to its reincarnation as a top online gaming destination for countries such as India, Indonesia and Malaysia. The new Friendster just officially emerged from beta as a game-centric site, and the remaining vestiges of its social networking past — you can still add friends, after all — are gamified with reward points. Moreover, owner MOL Global has added e-payments to the mix, letting users buy Friendster Coins to purchase virtual goods. Given predictions that the Asian gaming community will exceed 1 billion by 2016, the site’s future is looking rosier than ever. That might lessen the sting of being plum blown out of the social networking game by the big dogs.

Google’s gunning for web spammers, bans us from mentioning Bieber

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/26/google-targets-seo-spam/

down with this sort of thing1 Googles gunning for web spammers, bans us from mentioning Bieber

Google’s changing its search algorithm to punish sites that emphasize search-engine optimization over quality. Mountain View’s data centers will exclude sites that offer no useful content, have articles written in keyword-sprinkled gibberish or only link to sites within a cluster. If the computers find it, the site’s pagerank will be demoted, with the company expecting to affect around three percent of all English language queries when it goes live later this week. The company isn’t providing more details (lest it help those trying to game the system), so just get all of those gratuitous Justin Bieber references out of your system before Friday, okay?
