Google Fiber is ‘the most consistently fast ISP in America’

netflix isp rankings1 Google Fiber is the most consistently fast ISP in America

Like there was ever any doubt, right? Netflix — which serves up over one billion hours of video streaming to some 30 million members per month — owes it to itself to keep track of which ISPs are killing it, and which simply need to be killed. Now, the outfit’s finally ready to begin publishing its findings, ranking America’s major Internet Service Providers based upon “actual performance across all Netflix streams.” The shocker to end all shockers? “Google Fiber is now the most consistently fast ISP in America, according to actual user experience on Netflix streams in November.”

Of note, however, Verizon’s fiber-based FiOS offering came mighty close. Of course, Google’s Fiber isn’t available outside of the Kansas Cities region, while Verizon has (loosely) confirmed that it has no plans to expand the existing FiOS infrastructure beyond the 13 states that were lucky enough to get it. Broadly, cable shows better than DSL, while AT&T’s U-verse — dubbed a “hybrid fiber-DSL service” — ranked quite poorly compared to both Google Fiber and FiOS. Head on over to the source for the full rundown, and feel free to begin the relocation process to Kansas. Good internet, good barbecue, Collin Klein — what’s not to love?

Adobe announces Creative Cloud updates to Muse and Photoshop, team subscriptions and more

If you jumped on the Creative Cloud bandwagon, you’re about to cash in one of the major perks of taking said leap. Keeping its promise to roll out new features to the aforementioned members first, Adobe has announced updates to Muse and Photoshop alongside Creative Cloud training materials and team subscriptions. Let’s hit the highlights, shall we? Muse can not only help you publish websites without writing a line of code, but the software now offers assistance with smartphone and tablet-friendly versions of desktop sites, too. As far as new features for Photoshop CS6 are concerned, conditional actions (if this, then that), expanded Smart Object support, improved 3D effects and default type styles all settle in on the tool bench.

Looking to opt in to Adobe’s software service for your entire studio? No worries, the company has also outed Creative Cloud subscriptions for teams — complete with centralized admin tools and expert support — for $69 per month. That’s not all. Less than a month ago, the wraps were taken off of Creative Cloud Connection for sharing all of those essential project files. Now, said functionality is being trotted out in proper fashion. From what we gather, this will be a Dropbox-esque affair complete with drag-and-drop functionality that extends across Touch apps, too. Clients can also view design files here, like those from InDesign, even if they don’t have the requisi! te softw are installed on their machines. If that wasn’t enough, training materials are on the way in the form of exclusive content for card-carrying members. Get all that? Good. For the full rundown on all of the new features, consult the full PR that follows.

Samsung and Apple rule connected device share, those who snooze in mobile lose

idc connected share q3 2012 Samsung and Apple rule connected device share, those who snooze in mobile lose

Most market share studies are broken down by individual categories that don’t tell the whole story of their successes and failures. IDC has stepped forward with a more holistic look that covers PCs, phones and tablets all at once — and paints a very different picture. Samsung and Apple lead the pack in the third quarter of this year with an estimated 21.8 and 15.1 percent share each, based mostly on their mobile dominance. Lenovo’s equal balance between its rapidly growing PC and phone businesses put it at 7 percent. It’s those who haven’t done well outside of PCs that have struggled: IDC is quick to point out that HP’s exit from mobile left it at 4.6 percent and sinking fast, while it’s commonly known that Sony has yet to enjoy a truly blockbuster hit with its Android-based smartphones or tablets. The situation is changing quickly, but the data shows that companies can’t lean solely on traditional computers to thrive in the broader technology landscape.

Trent Reznor teases Beats-backed streaming music service, wants a personal touch

Dr. Dre isn’t the only musician to collaborate with Beats on projects deeper than one-off headphone models. Nine Inch Nails and How To Destroy Angels creator Trent Reznor tells The New Yorker that he and Beats are developing a streaming music service, codenamed Daisy, that should go beyond just automatically suggesting related songs like with Pandora. Alongside algorithm-based picks, Daisy should introduce “intelligent curation” from humans to make musical connections that wouldn’t otherwise take place. We’ll know more when the service goes live early next year; we’re presuming the recommendations will involve more than just another spin of The Downward Spiral.

NBC Sports and Yahoo Sports cut a deal to fuse internet, TV coverage

nbc sports live extra ipadsshot NBC Sports and Yahoo Sports cut a deal to fuse internet, TV coverage

While Yahoo has had a tumultuous last few years, one unit that has consistently been at the top of the heap is its sports news division. At the same time, NBC Sports has been getting a boost — even without the NHL’s help — ever since Comcast bought NBCUniversal. Apparently between Yahoo’s need to better leverage its media properties and NBC’s free agency after calling it quits with Microsoft the two have found common ground and struck a deal. Although both websites will continue to operate independently, expect multi-platform crossover between TV and internet, cross-promotion with links to NBC Sports Live Extra streams from within Yahoo, new made-for-the-internet video shows combining their assets and Yahoo’s fantasy sports will be the exclusive game for NBC’s Rotoworld site. Check after the break for the press release and a heads up on why even non-sports fans that pay for TV may need to keep an eye on this move.

YouTube takes to the skies with Virgin America content deal

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/07/youtube-virgin-america/

ifavirgin YouTube takes to the skies with Virgin America content deal

Admittedly, we’re more likely to hit up YouTube for its hilarious and bizarre amateur content than to pop in on one of those well-funded Original Channels, but that won’t necessarily be the case going forward. Several of the site’s original programming venues will soon be available through Virgin America’s in-flight entertainment system — “H+ The Digital Series,” “Blue,” “Written by a Kid,” “Crash Course” and “The Key of Awesome” are expected to hit aircraft beginning December 15th, according to Variety.

Sure, you could navigate to YouTube on your own through the carrier’s in-flight WiFi, but you’ll soon be able to enjoy at least a few titles in (presumably) higher quality through the 9-inch panel mounted to the seat in front of you, while freeing up bandwidth for those hardworking business travelers (and a few occasional Engadget editors) in the process. These latest YouTube selections join a variety of other content unique to Virgin, and considering that legacy carriers stock their IFE with “classic” flicks and a dismal selection of dated TV shows (assuming they offer the service at all), the nation’s “fun” alternative airline is starting to look even more appealing.

USPTO tentatively invalidates key Apple multitouch patent

uspto apple patent invalid USPTO tentatively invalidates key Apple multitouch patent

The US Patent and Trademark Office tentatively invalidated Apple’s so-called rubber-banding patent back in October, and it looks like it’s now done so again with one of the company’s key multitouch-related patents. According to FOSS Patents, the USPTO has issued an Office Action rejecting all 20 claims of patent 7,479,949, which is specifically related to scrolling and is described as “Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics.” Unlike the rubber-banding patent, though, this one did not figure in Apple’s recent trial with Samsung, although it has been used in cases against Motorola and HTC.

‘We’ve made the princely sum of £52′

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/07/gaming-company-derides-microsoft-rt-marketplace-/

rubicon vs windows rt 12 07 12 05 Weve made the princely sum of £52

UK gaming outfit Rubicon has castigated Microsoft after claiming a Windows RT port of its Great Big War Game made a meager £52 ($83) in its first week in the store. The company was particularly incensed at Redmond’s lack of promotional features to help the title’s visibility, claiming that “if you’re familiar with (its) new store, this means our app is forever consigned to the garbage bin.” The company added that the iOS, Android “and even RIM” stores have promoted the app, which it said was widely lauded, and felt that after investing £10,000 on the port, “we got spat on” by the software giant. The developer punctuated its blog statement by saying it won’t work with Microsoft again, and “that store is going to look mighty bleak for a long time to come” if it doesn’t change its policy. No doubt there’s some sour grapes getting squeezed here, but it’s fair to say that RT is much in need of some sweeter news.

Google, LG seeing more Nexus 4 demand than expected

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/06/shocker-google-lg-seeing-more-nexus-4-demand-than-expected/

dsc02789 Google, LG seeing more Nexus 4 demand than expected

Who’d have thought that pricing a high-end smartphone like the Nexus 4 at $350 or less would lead to strong sales? Google and LG certainly appear to have been caught off-guard. LG’s UK mobile lead Andy Coughlin tells CNET that the pair estimated Nexus 4 shipments in the way you’d expect for any phone, but have been rocked by “huge demand” — in short, they didn’t realize that offering such a giant bargain would lead to sellouts within minutes. While we don’t have tangible shipping numbers, that the spending sprees happen over and over again suggests that LG is producing more than a handful of Nexus 4s as it tries to keep up. We suspect that many of you reading this just want to know when sales resume; sadly, Coughlin’s not telling.

google apps 278x300 Google Apps discontinues basic package, asks new customers to pony up $50 per user for premium

Looking towards Mountain View to provide a suite of digital tools for your new business? Make sure to pen per-user costs into your ledger — Google Apps isn’t free anymore. According to Google’s enterprise blog, the basic Google Apps package is being abandoned to streamline the service, offering businesses a single, $50 per user option that promises 24/7 phone support, 25GB inboxes and a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Pre-existing free customers can still hum along unmolested, of course, and the standard pricing doesn’t apply to schools or universities, either. Personal Google accounts are still free too, doling out gratis Gmail and Drive access to anyone with a unique user name. The team hopes that streamlining the Apps will allow it to provide better service, possibly offering enterprise users new features on a faster timetable.
