Apple’s developers website, the site where app developers go for tools and resources to write software for Macs, iPhones, and iPads, has been down for the last few days.

Tonight, Apple confirmed the outage was due to a hack. The hacker apparently attempted to access personal information about the developers.

This Startup Lets You ‘Date’ Prospective New Employers Anonymously For $1000+ A Week

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/group-talent-try-a-job-before-you-buy-2013-7

For most of us, a job offer is an all or nothing thing. You do a few interviews and the company either offers you the job or not. You accept it, forsaking all others, or you don’t.

But a startup called GroupTalent that finds jobs for programmers (Android, Python, Ruby developers to be precise), is turning that on its head.

Its recruitment platform supports something called a “try out” period that lets employers and employees work together for a few days, or maybe a couple of weeks, on a freelance basis for an ample weekly salary. $1,000 – $3,000 a week is typical, though GroupTalent says some folks can make as much as $7,000 a week.

The programmer is hired by a company to jump in and build something useful. If it’s a fit, the two can then get permanently hitched. This is a little different than a typical freelance gig, because these companies are looking for a long-term relationship, not just a series of short-term gigs.

And here’s the best part: GroupTalent will hide your Try It from your current employer. If it’s not a fit, there’s no harm done. “By telling us who your current employer is, we can make sure they don’t see your profile,” the company promises.

The company operates in New York and San Francisco so far, and currently hosts almost 600 jobs. It has plans to add jobs in Seattle, Boston, Austin, San Diego and Los Angeles, it says.

Today the GroupTalent website added some new improved search features, too, so it’s easier to browse the freelance jobs to see if something sparks your interest.

GroupTalent is a TechStars startup that’s raised about $1 million so far. It’s cofounder and CEO, Manuel Medina, cut his teeth at Microsoft wooing developers into writing apps for Microsoft Game Studios. He also helped convince developers to write apps for Windows Phone. Cofounder Gordon Hempton is also an ex-Microsoft developer. He worked on Microsoft’s SQL Server.

Google selects Glass Explorers, will send invites to winners over the next few days

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/26/google-glass-explorers/

What would you do if you had Glass? Google asked you to share your plans last month, offering up 8,000 coveted reservations in the search giant’s “Explorers” program. Now, the company has finally selected the winners, and plans to send out order invitations “over the next few days.” Sadly, invite recipients will still need to hand over $1,500 (plus tax) for their very own set, and the program is currently limited to folks in the US, but this was still the best opportunity to get an early look at Glass, making it a very appealing program, despite the cost. Google received many creative applications, including a proposal from JetBlue, but only individual users will have an opportunity to make a purchase this time around — the company says that it’s “working on connecting with businesses in other ways.” Congratulations to the lucky winners — feel free to send us a tip when word finally hits your Google+ or Twitter inbox.

Veronica Mars movie looks for crowdfunding, would have digital copies near release (update: funded!)

Veronica Mars movie looks for crowdfunding, would have digital copies near release (video) (update: funded!)

There’s been no shortage of movie projects that lean on crowdfunding to get production underway. Producing a movie based on a major TV series like Veronica Mars, however? That’s fresh. Creator Rob Thomas has obtained support from Warner Bros. and lead actress Kristen Bell for a Kickstarter funding drive that, if it hits its $2 million goal, will shoot a full-length Veronica Mars feature this summer with a premiere around early 2014. Pledge makers would be rewarded with anything from a copy of the script through to a speaking role in the title. To us, the real highlight is the planned release strategy — like an increasing number of movies, we’d be watching digital copies “within a few days” of the opening, rather than months. While Thomas and crew can’t declare the fundraiser over until April 12th, it’s advancing quickly enough that the focus is less on whether or not the project will go forward and more on its chances at becoming an internet-backed blockbuster.

Update: Just a few hours after kicking off its crowdfunding effort, the Veronica Mars movie project has surpassed its $2 million goal. Right now it’s hovering around $2,035,000, but we suspect it’ll balloon even further within the 30 days that remain in the campaign.

Google Images gets redesigned, focuses on speed and metadata

Google Images gets redesigned, focuses on speed and metadata

Page and Co. have just unveiled a new look for Google Images that places a premium on metadata visibility, speed and slick looks. After gathering feedback from both users and webmasters, Google redesigned its image search to feature relevant information right next to images and speed load times by no longer loading source pages behind selected graphics. Mountain View also designed the new layout with keyboard surfing in mind, to boot. The new UI isn’t available across the board quite yet, but the search titan says folks will start to see the refreshed UI in the next few days.

Video’, Just Lost About Half Of Its Daily Users

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/socialcam-daily-users-2012-5

It looks like SocialCam, the hottest app on the App Store, is in serious trouble.

AppData has finally updated the daily users for Facebook-connected apps after a few days of lag, and it shows that SocialCam’s Facebook-connected daily users fell off a cliff.

That drop probably includes the past five days, which basically showed no change in daily users.

The Popularity Of Linsanity Has Surpassed Tebowmania

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/sports-chart-linsanity-has-surpassed-tebowmania-2012-2

If you want to get a sense of how popular Jeremy Lin has become in just a few days, check out this chart that measures the popularity of search terms on the internet.

In the last few days, Lin has surpassed even Tim Tebow in terms of internet popularity. And while it is the off-season for Tebow, consider that he made all the media rounds last week at the Super Bowl. And also notice that as Lin’s popularity is growing, Tebow’s numbers also peaked momentarily. This is likely due to comparisons between the two underdog athletes

A Whole Lot of Games [Ipad]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5511650/ipad-apps-by-the-numbers-a-whole-lot-of-games

iPad Apps, by the Numbers: A Whole Lot of GamesIt’s still very, very early in the world of iPad-specific apps, with less than 2,500 of them in the store compared to 150,000+ iPhone apps. But so far? It’s totally dominated by games.

App store analysts Distimo did a rundown of what you’ll find in the iPad app store, and a full third of them are games. The next closest category is “entertainment,” which clocks in at 11%, followed by “education” at 8.6%.

That seems like a whole lot of game playing and being entertained, but that proportion is even more heavy for iPhone apps, where a full 70% of apps fall into those two categories.

iPad Apps, by the Numbers: A Whole Lot of GamesBut with devs just getting the actual hardware into their hands a few days ago, we’re clearly just seeing the very beginning of the iPad apps craze. And depending on how people decide the want to use this thing, we could see even more games pop up or we could see the store balanced out with more content-based or productivity apps. But really, the smart money is on games, games, games. [Distimo via TechCrunch]
