The Secret Algorithm That Controls Everything About Orange JuiceIf you ever wondered how orange juice can always taste so damn perfect every time you have it, it’s because of an algorithm. Coca Cola, which makes Simply Orange and Minute Maid, has an algorithm called the “Black Book” which allows it to standardize Mother Nature. It’s crazy.

We knew the odd process that orange juice companies followed to create consistently delicious OJ: strip the oxygen which strips the flavor and then artificially flavor the juice with “flavor packs” made by flavor and fragrance companies. What we didn’t know was how amazingly detailed the algorithm used to figure everything out and how much it controlled of the OJ squeezing process.

Business Week’s fascinating report on big box OJ discovered how ridiculously impressive (and scary) the whole process is. The architect of Coke’s OJ model, Revenue Analytics consultant Bob Cross who also built an algorithm for Delta for airline efficiency told Business Week that the Black Book, “is definitely one of the most complex applications of business analytics. It requires analyzing up to 1 quintillion decision variables to consistently deliver the optimal blend, despite the whims of Mother Nature.”

The Black Book has data on over 600 flavors that go into an orange, detailing the acidity, sweetness, etc. of each batch of juice. Once it profiles the raw juice, it spits out how to blend the juice to get into the perfectly consistent taste we’re all used to. Even deeper, Black Book can analyze weather patterns, crops, etc. to adjust any sort of juicing plans. Black Book even uses satellites to monitor crops and tells farmers the optimal time to pick the fruit. It’s considered every possible angle for orange juice, with math.

Facebook Is Launching a Numberless "Social Calling" ServiceTechCrunch is reporting that Facebook is teaming up with carriers to provide a “social calling” service. Initially striking up a deal with French carrier Orange, it seems the service will allow friends to make voice calls without knowing each other’s numbers.

The service will apparently allow users to make calls from mobile and desktop flavors of Facebook, using ties on Facebook, rather than possession of a phone number, to allow calling. It’ll also apparently support group calls, too.

The service will be powered by Orange’s new IP-based call app Libonalready available on iOS—which is effectively a mobile Skype competitor. The Facebook social calling service is planned to go live in France during the summer of 2013. Orange’s reach spreads far and wide across Europe, though, so it seems likely that the service’s tentacles will spread.

It remains unclear how quickly that will happen, of course, and whether or not Facebook plans to roll it out internationally any time soon. It’s also not clear how consumers will embrace the news: while there’s certainly a shift towards voice calls being made online, the idea of any Facebook contact calling at will is maddening even in theory. Twitter is Targeting Targeted Ads to Become More Targeted (Updated)Twitter just announced that its letting advertisers create better, more targeted advertisements so you’ll actually see stuff you care about in your Twitter feed. It’s the way the Internet works in 2012—ads already know your tastes.

Twitter uses a variety of signals to determine what a Twitter user likes such as who you’re following and which content you click on. Here’s what they’ll now be doing for advertisements:

There are two flavors of interest targeting. For broader reach, you can target more than 350 interest categories, ranging from Education to Home and Garden to Investing to Soccer, as shown in the screenshot below. As an example, if you were promoting a new animated film about dogs, you could select Animation (under Movies and Television), Cartoons (under Hobbies and Interests), and Dogs (under Pets).

If you want to target more precise sets of users, you can create custom segments by specifying certain @​usernames that are relevant to the product, event or initiative you are looking to promote. Custom segments let you reach users with similar interests to that @​username’s followers; they do not let you specifically target the followers of that @​username. If you’re promoting your indie band’s next tour, you can create a custom audience by adding @​usernames of related bands, thus targeting users with the same taste in music.

It’s obviously not the worst thing in the world to have ads you might care about in your Twitter feed but it’s sort of eerie (like in Gmail) to see that ads know so much about you and your habits. YEAH I LIKE CAT VIDEOS, DOESN’T MEAN I WANT TO BUY PURINA ONE CAT FOOD. [Twitter]

AT&T Is Going To Try To Blow Away Amazon’s Cloud (AMZN, T)

There’s already no shortage of companies with their own “clouds” trying to blow up Amazon’s popular web services.

Now AT&T will too.

On Monday AT&T announced  AT&T Cloud Architect, which it describes as “a developer-centric cloud platform providing storage and infrastructure as-a-service.” Sound familiar? It should. That’s what Amazon’s Web Services does, as does Microsoft Azure, IBM’s SmartCloud, Red Hat’s OpenShift and countless others.

AT&T has promised that it’s new cloud will support multiple flavors of Linux (CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat) as well as Windows Server.

AT&T was vague as to when its cloud would be available, saying that it would be turned on sometime in the next few weeks, reports Ars Technica.

The news is significant for another reason. AT&T is choosing OpenStack to build its cloud, making it the first carrier to join the OpenStack consortium. OpenStack is an open-source cloud architecture project based on a collaboration between NASA and hosting company Rackspace. It’s not the only open source cloud architecture, but it is the one that seems to be winning the most support with the most important participants.

Having the cloud industry settle on one architecture is good for enterprise customers. It ensures they won’t get stuck with one cloud vendor. They can move their applications more easily between multiple clouds built with the same technology.

That’s the heart of the complaint thrown at Amazon by competitors like Rackspace. They say Amazon’s proprietary technology makes it hard for customers to move.
