Facebook kills physical Gifts in favor of digital redemption codes

Facebook kills physical Gifts in favor of ecodes, pokes sigh in relief

Not even a year after its inception, Facebook is killing physical Gifts. According to TechCrunch, the social media giant is ending its intermediary role for sending teddy bears, wine and chocolate (sounds romantic, no?) from its partners. Instead, it’s focusing on its own gift card, as well as redemption codes for iTunes credits and the like. Why? Well, aside from the cash the company will save, users simply weren’t buying physical Gifts all that much. The new Gift page will begin rolling out to ten percent of the site’s US userbase over the weekend, and the entire stateside population should see it within two weeks. It’s a little less personal, sure, but at least you won’t have to worry about getting your loved ones gift receipts.

We’ve Bought $41 Billion in Unused Gift Cards Since 2005 [Factoid]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5871883/weve-bought-41-billion-in-unused-gift-cards-since-2005

We've Bought $41 Billion in Unused Gift Cards Since 2005Gift cards are the laziest, lousiest, most convenient, popular and widely given present. And this is your yearly reminder of just how much they stink. Since 2005, we’ve tossed out more value in gift cards than the entire GNP of Ghana.

$41 billion is pretty hard to defend. We’re lazy; we have things to do; we… didn’t really want the damn things in the first place. Things have gotten a little better over the past few years, since the Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure (CARD) Act passed in 2009, but in 2011 there are already $2 billion in unused cards. That’s down from $8 billion in 2007, but still, $2 billion a massive amount of waste.

According to TowerGroup, which provided the gift card data, 85 percent of gift cards are used within 65 days. After that? Not so great. So do yourself a favor and get out there and actually spend the money your generous but highly inconsiderate family members gifted to you this holiday season. [ABC News]

Cardpool Saves You Money with Discounted Gift CardsWe’ve all gotten a gift card or two that we wished had been to a different store or just been plain old cash. Cardpool is a web site for people selling—and to your benefit, people looking!—for discounted gift cards.

How discounted? Discounts range from 3-30% on gift card purchases. Let’s say, for example, you were going to do some shopping at The North Face outdoor store. You could head over to the listing in Cardpool for The North Face, grab a card around the purchase amount of the items you’re looking for, and save an automatic 15%.

Cardpool only accepts cards that have no expiration date or associated fees so you’ll never be stuck with a card that is decreasing in value because of non-use fees or on the cusp of expiration. While you’re considering stocking up on gift cards, make sure to check out how to maximize their use and value.
