Yes, And Now We Have Porn-vertising

An elderly couple sits on a bench overlooking a snowy park. The woman looks up at her partner, lovingly, and he returns the glance with a grin. The piano music swells, and they go back to observing the park. This is, of course, an ad for porn.

Inline image 1

The ad, submitted by popular porno purveyor PornHub to run in this year’s Super Bowl, was rejected by CBS and won’t run. Not for any xxxtreme content, obviously; it’s more that it would be an ad that directed millions and millions of happy football-viewing families to a hardcore porno site with animated bodily everythings right there on its landing page. Still, the ad is pretty damn cute and charmingly subversive. Pornhub’s got a poll up to see if users think it should air (page is SFW, URL and overall site very much not), but it’s probably gotten its money’s worth already. And given us the most adorable porn promotion ever in the process. [Pornhub via BetaBeat]

Does This Zip-Together Chair Bend the Laws Of Physics? At first glance Igor Lobanov’s Wormhole chair looks like an impossible object that could only exist as a computer physics simulation. But once you wrap your head around its zip-together design, it not only seems plausible, but also pretty genius.

Each chair is composed of two flat, but rounded, frame pieces that each fold into a C-shape and completely zip together. So they end up creating a self-supporting place to sit that looks like someone has torn a wormhole into another dimension. It won a much-deserved Red Dot design award, but is sadly still just a concept waiting for an unnamed yet popular Swedish maker of flat-pack furniture to license the design. Keeping the ‘app’ out of Apple’s TV

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/04/switched-on-keeping-the-app-out-of-apples-tv/

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Rumors continue to heat up that Apple will enter the television market next year, stepping up its Apple TV “hobby” into a greater revenue-generating vocation. The company would clearly like to repeat the kind of rousing success it has seen in smartphones. There, it entered a market at least as crowded and competitive as that for televisions whereas most of its Windows rivals have barely been able to eke out a few models with nominal share.

Indeed, the challenge is not as much about competition as commoditization. At first glance, this would be a curious time for Apple to enter the TV space. The HD and flat-panel transitions on which premium manufacturer brands and retailers once feasted has long passed. “Flat-panel TV” and “HDTV” are now just “TV.” And prices for smaller sets are settling into a range familiar to those who remember what they cost back in the heyday of CRTs.

What’s different, though, is that the state of the smart TV market looks strikingly like the smartphone market did before Apple’s entrance. The market essentially has “feature TVs” that present a few popular canned services (YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, etc.) and “smart TVs” that are a fractured mixture of homegrown offerings (from companies such as Panasonic, Samsung, LG and Toshiba) and an experience-challenged licensed OS (Android from Sony and Vizio).

The company has clung to the idea of TV as a passive experience.

Why your brand MUST have a presence on social networks

At first glance, I said false when I read “Brand Presence on Social Networks Trusted Almost As Much As Peer Advice” — but when I looked more closely, it read “most credible source for information about a brand.”  This is significant because a “brand itself” SHOULD be the most credible source of accurate and up-to-date information. Even consumers are not always the best source or always have the latest information. And further notice that “a marketer” is next to the last on the bottom. Consumers want accurate and up to date info but they do not want to be sold to.

Consumers are good for “subjective” input on the quality and value of a brand’s products or services. A brand must be responsible for the accuracy of its own objective information. Formerly a brand’s own website was the best place to house objective information such as technical specs, nutrition information, etc. While third party sites like reviews sites are the best place to house subjective information like customer reviews, etc. Today, since most customers frequent social networks and seldom visit brand’s websites (they never did much anyway) the place to put objective information is on brand pages on social networks. Note that this does not mean a marketing page designed to “sell.” It means place “credible information about a brand.”

Brands Vie for Credibility on Social Networks

APRIL 2, 2010

Asked what source was most believable when it came to information found about brands on social networking sites, Internet users were most likely to favor their peers. But “the brand itself” came in a close second, far ahead of journalists, considered traditionally to be an objective source. Notably, users were much less trusting of marketers—a separate response from brands—and didn’t put much faith in a brand’s competitors either.

Doing Social Marketing in Pharma and other Heavily Regulated Industries

http://bit.ly/3XsK5j

Excerpt:

Conventional wisdom would probably say that social marketing is impossible in industries like financial services, pharmaceutical, and healthcare due to heavy regulations and requirements for disclosure. More specifically, in the pharmaceutical industry there exists a regulation that requires companies to report “adverse events” to the Federal Drug Administration within 72 hours of “hearing” it. At first glance, this single regulation could render most forms of online marketing — which are based on two-way communications — to be out of bounds; especially social media, where people talk online.

Traditional ads are like homeless marketing – at best you’ve got a glance to get your message across

by: Aoife city womanchile

by: Aoife city womanchile

Homeless marketing – they hold up a sign and hope that passersby will look down, read the sign, then stop, take out their wallet, take some money out, and give it to them.  What’s the probability of that happening?  What are the chances they will even get a glance?  Same thing happens with TV ads, print ads, radio ads, and all forms of traditional push ads.  Where is the value exchange? There is none.
