The 128GB Microsoft Surface Pro Only Offers 83GB of Usable Space

The 128GB Microsoft Surface Pro Only Offers 83GB of Usable SpaceThe standard Windows 8 Surface tablets came in for some stick, thanks to the Windows files eating up 13GB of hard drive space. That’s nothing compared to Windows 8 Pro, which requires an astonishing 45GB of the Surface Pro’s disk space for its files.

The numbers, obtained from Microsoft by Softpedia, would make an absolute mockery of the 64GB version of the Surface Pro tablet if replicated there, with the machine possibly only having 19GB of space for users to use if Windows 8 eats up a similar chunk of drive space on the more affordable Pro option. Hard drive shipments recover from floods in Thailand, expected to reach record high

Hard drive shipments recover from floods in Thailand, expected to reach record high

Last year’s floods in Thailand caused hard drive shortages after wreaking havoc on a number of electronics manufacturers, but new stats from IHS iSuppli indicate that the HDD market for PCs has fully recovered and is poised to hit an all time high. The firm expects 524 million units for internal use in PCs to ship this year, besting the previous record by 4.3 percent. What’s giving the recovery an added boost? According to the analytics group, the extra demand comes courtesy of Windows 8 and Ultrabooks. Unfortunately for deal hounds, the company noted in a report earlier this year that prices aren’t expected to dip below the pre-flood range until 2014. If IHS iSuppli projections hold true, total annual hard driv! e shipme nts could reach 575.1 million by 2016.

$30 billion net revenue, $1.5 billion net earnings, big drop in PC sales

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/22/hp-reports-q1-2012-earnings-30-billion-net-revenue-1-5-billi/

HP reported results for its first fiscal quarter of 2012 this afternoon, including $30 billion in net revenue (down seven percent from the previous year), and net earnings of $1.5 billion (down a full 44 percent). Partly contributing to that drop is a slump from its Personal Systems Group, which saw revenue slip 15 percent year-over-year, and total desktop and notebook units decline a rather drastic 19 and 18 percent, respectively. The company’s Imaging and Printing Group also saw a seven percent decline in revenue, with the total number of printer units slipping 15 percent. HP’s services business managed to eke out a one percent growth with revenue of $8.6 billion, though, while its software business saw the biggest growth in any one area at 30 percent (that includes results from the recently-acquired Autonomy). The company’s full rundown can be found in the press release after the break, with additional numbers available at the source link below.

Update: On the company’s earnings call, CEO Meg Whitman laid some of the blame for PSG’s decline on hard drive shortages, but also said that HP has “under-invested in innovation for the last several years” and “been late to market too often,” adding that “we have to lead again.” A transcript of Whitman’s prepared remarks can be found here.
