Facebook Ads Still Lag Paid Search In Click-Through Rates

The telecommunications and publishing industries enjoy the highest average click-through rates on their Facebook ads, according to a new report from Salesforce and Social.com.

Telecom had the best-performing Facebook ads with a CTR  of .92%. Ads from the publishing industry enjoyed a CTR of .8%.

The worst-performing ads came from deals, advertising, gaming, and at the bottom of the heap — dating service ads, which had a .027% CTR. The low numbers are a sign that consumers are leery of these industries, and may consider them spammy.

By comparison, paid search ads average CTRs of 1% to 5% for large consumer brands, according to research conducted by former Omnicom Chief Digital Officer Dr. Augustine Fou in March 2013.

The Salesforce and Social.com report on Facebook ads was based on 1 million ad units and 114 billion impressions shown in 25 countries between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2013.

NBC Sports and Yahoo Sports cut a deal to fuse internet, TV coverage

While Yahoo has had a tumultuous last few years, one unit that has consistently been at the top of the heap is its sports news division. At the same time, NBC Sports has been getting a boost — even without the NHL’s help — ever since Comcast bought NBCUniversal. Apparently between Yahoo’s need to better leverage its media properties and NBC’s free agency after calling it quits with Microsoft the two have found common ground and struck a deal. Although both websites will continue to operate independently, expect multi-platform crossover between TV and internet, cross-promotion with links to NBC Sports Live Extra streams from within Yahoo, new made-for-the-internet video shows combining their assets and Yahoo’s fantasy sports will be the exclusive game for NBC’s Rotoworld site. Google's Cloud Print Now Lets You Send Documents Direct to FedExGoogle’s Cloud Print service might not be the most exciting thing in the world, but it is damn useful. And it just got even more practical: it now lets you print documents to other Android devices as a PDF, or even print off documents at a local FedEx store.

The service allows you to print off documents at one of 1,800 FedEx locations in the US, and then go pick them up with a retrieval code at one of their Print & Go machines. Smart.

The update also means that a heap of Canon printers now work with Google’s Cloud Print service, too. [Ars Technica]

American Apparel’s Profits Are Getting Clipped Thanks To Groupon (APP)

Just when it looked like things were starting to look up for cash-strapped American Apparel, profits are reportedly getting shaved.



From The New York Post‘s James Covert:

The hipster clothing chain racked up impressive sales gains during the holidays, but profits were squeezed hard as it took steep discounts, including those from a barrage of Groupon offers nationwide, sources told The Post.

American Apparel rang up millions of dollars in the fourth quarter selling cardigans, corduroys and sexy leggings through the daily deals site — a heap of bargains amounting to a “small but material” percentage of the company’s $157 million in total sales during the period, said one source briefed on the company’s finances.

The controversial clothing company has been struggling to turnaround its operations.
