After less than two years in business, Pinterest is already one of the most popular social networks in the world, as measured by engagement, according to data from comScore, via BI Intelligence.
As you can see here, it’s ranked just below Facebook and Tumblr as the most popular site to hang out on.
One other thing of note on this chart is Twitter’s low engagement rate. It’s somewhat surprising, but we’d guess it’s a mix of factors. One being that mobile app usage is big for Twitter. The other being that clicking on links on Twitter takes you off of Twitter, unlike the other sites which encourage you to click to content they host.

Google, Facebook, Twitter and others speak out against the Stop Online Piracy Act

The ad itself is a letter sent by the nine companies to Congress, which states that while they support the stated goals of the bill and the related Protect IP Act, they believe that, as written, the bills “would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action, and technology mandates that would require monitoring of web sites.” The companies further went on to say that they believe the measures also “pose a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and job-creation, as well as to our Nation’s cybersecurity.” While they didn’t all sign onto the letter, those companies also also joined by a host of others who have spoken out against the legislation, including Foursquare and Tumblr. The sole witness against the proposed measures at today’s hearing, however, was Google’s copyright policy counsel, Katherine Oyama — you can find her testimony on Google’s Public Policy Blog linked below.

Father Of The Internet Says "Shoot The Patent Lawyer" (GOOG)

Vint Cerf, one of the inventors of the Internet and now a Google evangelist, still thinks open standards will win in the end.
He just finished speaking on stage at Atmosphere, the company’s cloud computing event at its headquarters in Mountain View.
The host presented a hypothetical scenario in which a young genius discovers the replacement for the Internet. Does she publish the spec immediately or call a patent lawyer?
“Shoot the patent lawyer,” he replied.
“Bob [Kahn] and I knew we would not succeed if we tried to protect the Internet’s design.” The only way they could be sure it would get widespread adoption was by publishing the technical standards it was based on. “I still think that’s good advice.”
His point echoes Google’s stand on the patent wars happening in the mobile space, but Google plays the patent game as well for key inventions like its search algorithms.
Cerf also talked about the importance of Internet governance, moving to IPv6 as the original IPv4 addresses are used up, and explained that idea of Internet-connected devices like refrigerators and lightbulbs used to be a joke, but is now becoming real.

Flash 11 and AIR 3 landing tonight and delivering 7.1 surround sound to connected home theaters

Later tonight Adobe Flash 11 and AIR 3 will hit the tubes delivering with it a host of new features, including hardware acceleration for 2D and 3D graphics — at least for desktops. Stage 3D support will be added to the mobile variants for Android, iOS and BlackBerry at a later date. AIR 3 will also be sprucing up connected entertainment devices, like Samsung SmartTVs, with the ability to deliver Flash-based games and content to your home theater system. What’s more, Adobe has baked in support for both Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound. That means both 5.1 and 7.1 sound can be built into an AIR app, whether it be a game or streaming video, and pumped out at up to 512Kbps though your Blu-ray player or other connected theater component.
