Facebook opens up embedded posts to everyone

Facebook now letting everyone embed posts, even your mom

Now that Facebook has let media outlets try their hand at embedded posts for a few weeks, it’s opened up that door to the rest of us plebeians. Everyone, and yes we mean everyone, can now embed any public Facebook post, complete with images, links, text and hashtags, on to their own site. Your adoring readership may then “like” or hit follow on the source if they’re so inclined. So hey, now anyone can serve as a guerrilla news source the next time a major news organization goes offline. To see what an embedded post looks like, we’ve included one from our Engadget account after the break.

Brands need to be present wherever audiences invest their time and attention. Increasingly, that means social media. U.S. audiences spend a half-hour to three hours daily on social mediaSocial media is one of the largest time buckets on mobile.

Brands and businesses that are invisible on social media will miss a chance at engagement that their competitors might seize. More importantly, there are already well-known cases of brands that successfully revitalized their images or launched themselves thanks to social media wins. The benefits to a successful social media brand presence are significant, even if the route to get there isn’t clear-cut.

The first step ! is choos ing the right platforms to invest time and resources in. Which platforms to be on is a crucial question, even for the most deep-pocketed brands.

The Massive Scale Of Amazon’s Distribution Operations, Revealed Through Startling Images (AMZN)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/massive-scale-of-amazons-distribution-operations-2012-11

amazon fulfillment center

As the world’s largest online retailer, it’s no surprise that its biggest fulfillment center in Phoenix, Arizona is the size of 28 football fields.

That’s because it’s their goal to have everything anyone wants at anytime.

Amazon has 80 fulfillment centers in the world to handle all of its orders.

Even though Amazon already has massive operations, it’s still planning to open at least two new fulfillment centers in California over the next year or so.

And with the holiday shopping season in full force, Amazon hired an additional 50,000 employees to help with the expected demand.

Thanks to Imgur user SippingTea’s incredible photos, we have a sense of that this incredible scale actually looks like.

Stacks of shelves line the warehouse

Employees need carts to navigate through the massive amounts of inventory

Hundreds of boxes full of products cover the floor

iPads to Replace Paper Reference Manuals in All AA Cockpits

The FAA has approved American Airlines to be the first commercial airline to have its pilots use iPads in “all phases of flight,” rather than the 35lb paper reference manuals they’re used to.

Based on current fuel prices, The Next Web estimates that this will save the airline some $1.2M annually, across all of its aircraft. This month, AA’s 777 fleet will be the first to get the technological upgrade; by the end of this year, all fleet types are expected to have approval for the switch and the paper manuals will cease to be revised.

This is a huge environmentally friendly move for AA: not only will the ligher tablets save fuel, based on the weight carried by the planes, but they will also save paper, for ever manual printed and revised, company-wide.

This would also seem to confirm what we’ve all long suspected: there is really no real risk to having a tablet turned on during take-off. [TNW]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5928513/you-cant-even-see-the-latest-atm-card-skimmers

You Can't Even See The Latest ATM Card SkimmersWhile there have been plenty of terrifyingly realistic card skimmers in the past, we have bad news for you: the latest breed of skimmers are so thin that they’re inserted into the ATM, so you can’t see them at all.

Krebs on Security rounds up a handful or recent reports, and the news makes for grim reading. According to the European ATM Security Team, the latest ATM skimmers are in fact wafer-thin card reading devices, which are inserted up inside the card acceptance slots of cash machines. You can’t even see they’re there.

You Can't Even See The Latest ATM Card SkimmersOf course, the good news is that these kinds of insert skimmers need to be able to record your PIN as you type it in—and that requires some secondary recording device. Usually that’s a keypad overlay, or a tiny camera, so there are still clues to look out for as you take out your cash.

So, the advice remains the same: if anything ever looks suspicious at an ATM, don’t use it. It’s just annoying that spotting the problem is getting more and more difficult. [EAST via Krebs on Security]

Now That High-Res Screens Make Cameraphone Shots Look Ugly, Will You Use an Actual Camera Again?John Herrman over at Buzzfeed FWD astutely points out that all of the flaws of cameraphones (noisy sensors, poor focus abilities, artifacting, etc.) are being exposed now that we have large screens (both in size and resolution to display our images on). Going forward, is this enough of a reason to make you go back to carrying a proper, standalone camera? [FWD]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5906560/the-flashback-trojan-made-its-makers-10000-a-day

The Flashback Trojan Made Its Makers $10,000 a DayIf you’ve ever wondered why people write malware, it’s just like anything else – it’s all about the money. Symantec has worked out that the evil-doing bottom-feeders behind that nasty Flashback Trojan, which caught the Mac world with its pants down, were raking in around $10,000 a day.

Apparently Flashback was cheating Google out of ad money on a colossal scale, redirecting clicks and banking the cash. With 100,000s of users unknowingly infected, all those tiny 5p clicks quickly added up, and that was just one variant of the Trojan.

With that much money on the line it’s no wonder Macs have become a target – Windows users are supposedly wiser to these kinds of things. In theory it’s a lot easier, once you’ve actually managed to get onto a Mac, to hide-out there earning serious money. Now that they’ve successfully proved Macs are vulnerable, and made a hatful of money in the process, don’t expect the Mac to escape Windows-style virus hell – where there’s a will, there’s a way.
