Nielsen ratings expand definition of TV households to include internet-only viewers

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/21/nielsen-ratings-expand-definition-of-tv-households-to-include-in/

The Nielsen Company has monitored TV audiences since 1950, but soon it will expand that definition from solely households with antenna, cable or satellite access, but also those that have dropped those options but still get video over the internet. Reflecting the changing times, the move was first noted by The Hollywood Reporter and confirmed later by company executives to the New York Times and LA Times. Nielsen hinted at changes two years ago when TV ownership dropped for the first time in decades, which may turn around since the new definition includes viewers with internet-connected TVs, and could go further to include viewers with just a tablet or laptop. According to senior VP Pat McDonough, that means views over services like Aereo can be counted, since they still contain advertisements, which is what broadcasters rely on the ratings for, unlike ad-free Netflix or Hulu streams with different ads. Because of that, it seems unlikely the change will boost the numbers of internet darlings like Community or Arrested Development, but we can dream, right?

Disney considering 28-day rental window, because ‘On Stranger Tides’ was that good

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/08/disney-28-day-window/

That sound you can hear is the studios dashing around as they look for a new scapegoat. Disney’s got Redbox and Netflix in its sights as it declares plans to impose a 28-day window before it’ll make its titles available for rental. Despite conceding that the studio hadn’t seen any impact on overall DVD sales, CEO Bob Iger pointed to a 16 percent drop in quarterly revenue compared to 2010 as the motivation. It’s also collecting splinters in its backside as it watches to see how well digital locker service UltraViolet fares with consumers before committing to join the program. Of course, given the legitimacy of First Sale Doctrine, it’s possible Redbox will do as its done with Warner titles and just buy ’em at retail — as long as it can cover its costs as it does so.

Sports Fans Coalition motivated the FCC to review its NFL blackout rules

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/12/sports-fans-coalition-motivated-the-fcc-to-review-its-nfl-blacko/

Well, well, apparently the Sports Fans Coalition was had some success getting the FCC’s attention about the unfairness that is the most popular sports league in the State’s blackout policy. Currently, the NFL rules require any game that isn’t sold out to be blacked out in the home team’s market. The FCC extended that rule from over-the-air broadcasters to cable and satellite since most people don’t get TV with an antenna. This sounds like a good use of the FCC’s time and all, but considering FOX, CBS etc own the rights, we don’t see how removing this rule would change the NFL’s mind on its blackout policy. We suppose it’s possible that publicity from this type of deliberation from the FCC could spur bigger change from the NFL or even Congress, but considering the success of the NFL, this might not end peacefully.

TV broadcasters hope to dominate the second screen with ConnecTV

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/19/tv-broadcasters-hope-to-dominate-the-second-screen-with-connectv/

ConnecTV on an iPad

No one has quite figured it out yet, but there seems to be little doubt that tablet devices have their place on the couch to serve as a second screen while American’s enjoy their favorite past time — watching TV. In addition to many independent startups we’ve discussed in the past, the old guard, that already owns most of broadcast TV stateside, has a startup of its own called ConnecTV. In development for two years already, ConnecTV is currently in beta and has the hopes to go live in January. The idea is of course to put what you might want to see on your second screen while you watch the main action on the big screen. This includes sports scores, statistics, as well as what your friends may or may-not be saying on Twitter or Facebook — and of course advertising. We’d be shocked if most tablet owners weren’t already using their slate in front of the TV and can imagine how many more might if there was a great app that brought it all together.
