drag2share: Facebook Still Trumps The Competition As A Platform For Brands And Celebrities

source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/businessinsider/~3/IiKAlGlqcZo/facebook-wins-as-a-brand-platform-2013-9

Whether you’re a celebrity or a major brand, Facebook is still by far the most effective platform — at least judging by audience size.

Celebrities Britney Spears and Lady Gaga are the most followed pages on Google+, each with more than 7 million fans. On Twitter, Justin Bieber tops the list with more than 44 million followers and Katy Perry with 42 million.

Twitter’s not bad as a platform for celebrities, but it’s still a ways from matching Facebook.

On Facebook, Rihanna and Eminem each have over 70 million followers.

If we narrow down the list to brand pages, we see a similar pattern, with an even more dramatic advantage for Facebook.

The top brand on Google+, Angry Birds, has 5 million fans, whereas the top 150 brands on Facebook all have over 5 million people following their page.

Coca-Cola has over 70 million fans on Facebook. Red Bull, Converse, Starbucks, and Playstation have between 30 and 40 million fans.

It may be that the ability to embed Google+ posts — which will allow users to share Google+ content around the Web — will lure more brands and public figures to Google’s social network.

These charts are based on data provided by Socialbakers, which has access to the APIs for Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. <! /p>

Topsy lets you search tweets from 2006, look up old cringeworthy posts

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/05/topsy-expanded-twitter-search/

DNP Topsy now with tweets since 2006

Next time you’re feeling nostalgic and want to peruse old Twitter posts — such as in 2006, when Pluto was demoted to dwarf planet status — you might want to pay Topsy a visit. The social search engine, which could previously look for posts up until 2010, has expanded its archives to include tweets from as far back as Twitter’s birth in 2006. Simply input terms in the search box, and you’ll find their newest and oldest mentions on the site. Even better than that, you can use the site to read every single tweet a user has ever posted by querying “from:yourusername,” making it easy to look for the first time you tweeted about Lady Gaga’s wardrobe. Before you run off and facepalm at your old tweets, though, check out @engadget’s first one by Ryan Block after the cut.

Justin Bieber Has the Fakest Twitter Followers

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5994569/justin-bieber-has-the-fakest-twitter-followers

Justin Bieber Has the Fakest Twitter FollowersNot to enrage the Bieber Nation or Beliebers or whatever Bieberian name tweens and post-tweens call themselves now, but it looks like a lot of the people who follow him on Twitter are fake. In fact, he has the highest number of fakeout Twitter followers out of the top 10 Twitter accounts. 16.7 million accounts are fake! 2.6 million are inactive! Those numbers are ridiculous.

Bieber has 17.8 million real followers (a lot! but certainly a lot different from his listed 37.2 million followers) which puts him in second place in Twitter popularity behind Lady Gaga, who has 19 million real followers. The fake stats were found by Statista using the Socialbakers tool which weeds out fake accounts by looking at their tweets to see if they include spamworthy words like “diet”, “make money” and “work from home”. It’s not too surprising that all these popular stars have so many fake followers (Et tu, Barack?) because massive popularity is a magnet for spam leeches. [Statista via BBC]

This Is The Only Reason Album Sales Were Up Last Year

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/this-may-be-the-only-reason-the-music-industry-survived-last-year-2012-1

adele

For the first time since 2004, album sales are up, and nearly all the credit goes to Adele. Her sophomore album 21 sold nearly 6 million copies, completely dominating the industry and cheering music execs (for once). But given how dependent the industry was on one artist in 2011, is this news really that promising? Here, a guide:

Album sales were up?
Yes, though only slightly. Sales of complete albums in 2011 reached 330.6 million in the U.S., an increase of 1.3 percent over 2010, according to Nielsen. It’s the first uptick in sales since 2004 and Adele deserves much of the credit: Her 21 moved 5.82 million copies — the best one-year sales count since Usher’s Confessions sold 7.98 million in 2004. Her 2009 debut, 19, enjoyed a corresponding bump, selling nearly a million units in 2011 as well.

How significant is this for the music industry?
A one percent increase isn’t exactly something to write home about, says Ben Sisario at at The New York Times.  “Some businesses might call that level of growth flat.” But considering the past decade’s steady downward slide — revenue from recorded music fell 52 percent over the last 10 years — this is a relief. “For the beleaguered music industry, any positive news about sales is cause for celebration.”

How much did Adele dominate?
She sold 3.3 million more albums the year’s second-hi! ghest se ller, Michael Buble’s Christmas, and 3.7 million more than Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. Adele spent 14 weeks atop the Billboard album charts in 2011, says Devon Maloney at Billboard, and 21 is the first album since 2005 to log 30 weeks of 100,000-plus sales. Her song “Rolling in the Deep” was the year’s best-selling single and the most-played song on the radio. Furthermore, 21 is the best-selling digital album of all time. Taken together, her two albums amounted to 2 percent of total record sales, a nearly unprecedented total for one artist. Without her efforts, says Daniel Kreps at SPIN, record sales would actually be down. So while Adele is being hailed as “the savior of music,” says Tyler Coates at Black Book, “the industry is still tanking.”

What about the digital sales?
Digital music sales rose 8.5 percent, says Coates, while sales of complete digital albums rose 20 percent. Though such boosts seem like a good sign for the industry, digital sales offer the lowest profit margin of all music sales. CD sales, which deliver the greatest profit margin, were, unsurprisingly, down six percent.

Do you know where your ads are being shown?

Protecting brand reputation is the #2 top concern among advertisers, according to a 2009 Aberdeen Group study. And yet, there is still not much they can do to see where, next to what, or in what context their ads are being shown.
