Sports Fans Coalition motivated the FCC to review its NFL blackout rules

Well, well, apparently the Sports Fans Coalition was had some success getting the FCC’s attention about the unfairness that is the most popular sports league in the State’s blackout policy. Currently, the NFL rules require any game that isn’t sold out to be blacked out in the home team’s market. The FCC extended that rule from over-the-air broadcasters to cable and satellite since most people don’t get TV with an antenna. This sounds like a good use of the FCC’s time and all, but considering FOX, CBS etc own the rights, we don’t see how removing this rule would change the NFL’s mind on its blackout policy. We suppose it’s possible that publicity from this type of deliberation from the FCC could spur bigger change from the NFL or even Congress, but considering the success of the NFL, this might not end peacefully.

NHL Attendance Is A Huge Disappointment So Far

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-nhl-attendance-is-down-despite-nba-lockout-2011-10

With the NBA lockout still in full-swing, now would seem like a golden opportunity for the NHL. But early returns from the ticket office are not encouraging.

Through the first 124 games of the regular season (~10%), average attendance in the NHL is down more than 400 fans per game, averaging just 16,684. Capacity is also down with arenas filling just 91.0 percent of available seats. And this number is heavily influenced by the opening night attendance figures which are typically a big draw.

On the other hand, the New York Rangers are yet to play a home game, and their attendance will pull the league average up slightly.

But with the NBA in disarray, these numbers must be a disappointment for the NHL no matter how they are spun…

Barely Anyone Watched The World Series Last Night, But It Still Got Twice As Many Viewers As Football

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/mlb-rangers-cardinals-world-series-ratings-lowest-ever-for-a-game-5-2011-10

Bud Selig

Last night’s overnight rating of 10.0 was the lowest-ever for a World Series game five, and was down from the 10.1 overnight rating for Sunday night’s game four.

Still, the 10.0 rating easily outpaced the Monday Night Football matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars that pulled an overnight rating of 5.8. That tied the record for the lowest rating ever for a Monday Night Football game.

When asked about Major League Baseball’s low World Series ratings prior to last night’s game, commissioner Bud Selig continued to push the company line. “I can show you all the numbers. Baseball is more popular than ever,” said Selig.

Luckily for Selig and Major League Baseball, the World Series will have a game six and won’t have to worry about competing with any NFL games. Ratings for game six and a potential game seven should soar.

The NFL Is Still King Among American Sports Fans

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-nfl-is-still-king-among-american-sports-fans-2011-10

In a recent survey by Scarborough Sports Marketing, 62 percent of American Adults listed the NFL as a sport in which they have at least a little interest. That was tops among all sports, easily out-pacing Major League Baseball with 49 percent.

It also might be time to reconsider what we call a “major sport” in the United States. The NBA came in fifth, behind college football. And the NHL was 12th, behind NASCAR, high school sports, and figure skating.

Interestingly, MLB is not even the second most popular “sport.” They fall behind the Olympics, which is more of an event than a sport, but I say tomato, and you say tomato (wait, that doesn’t work as well when not spoken out loud).

Here are the 20 most popular sports among American adults…

Guy Wins $1,000,000 For Pitching A Perfect Game…In A Videogame

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5532088/guy-wins-1000000-for-pitching-a-perfect-gamein-a-videogame

Guy Wins src=The folks at 2K Sports offered $1 million to the first person to pitch a perfect game in Major League Baseball 2K10—a supposedly difficult task. 24 hours after the game was released, they had to write a check.

Using Braves pitcher Kenshin Kawakami as his avatar, 24-year-old Alabama resident Wade McGilberry was able to complete his million dollar game in less than 90 minutes after returning home from work.

Great news for Wade because he recorded his attempts according to 2K Sports’ rules, but not so great news for them because as “insurance companies couldn’t possibly come up with the odds of throwing a perfect game, 2K Sports didn’t take out insurance and now will pay McGilberry a lump sum of $1 million out of its own pocket.” Oops.
