New Apple iPad mini, 4th-generation iPad reach the FCC

Apple’s iPad mini and 4th-generation iPad didn’t arrive alone. In the company’s time-honored tradition, it has timed the FCC filings for both devices to show up alongside the products themselves. Each iOS tablet has been approved in both singular WiFi and dual cellular editions: the iPad mini has appeared as the WiFi-only A1432 as well as the A1454 and A1455 for worldwide HSPA+, EV-DO and LTE coverage, while the full-size iPad has been cleared in directly paralleled A1458, A1459 and A1460 versions. Not surprisingly, the frequency range matches that of the iPhone 5 and suggests that we’re dealing with the same Qualcomm MDM9615 chip. We’ll know more once the two iPads are in our hands and those of teardown artists, but for now you can explore Apple’s regulatory gymnastics in full at the source links.

Android users chew an average 870MB of cellular data per month, youngest gobble the most

Ever wonder how much data you burn through every month on average? If you’re an Android user within the US, odds are that it’s quite a lot. The NPD Group estimates that Americans of the Google persuasion typically consume about 870MB of data on cellular networks every month. While it’s not an extreme amount next to the 2.5GB of WiFi usage, it’s enough to give anyone second thoughts about coasting on a basic data plan — and a reflection of how both 4G and media apps have changed our behavior. Not surprisingly, it’s a younger crowd more comfortable with smartphones that’s the most aggressive: the 18-24 set races through 1.05GB a month where the 55-plus audience uses a more modest (if still healthy) 750MB. We don’t yet know how iOS stacks up in current conditions, but the NPD is promising a comparable look soon. Something tells us the iPhone 5′s LTE will lead to just as much voraciousness.

Samsung Galaxy Stellar pops up in Verizon docs, might light up our skies soon

Having launched an all-out blitz on the high-end of US smartphones, Samsung must be eager to conquer the mid-range as well. A Verizon rebate list finding its way to Droid-Life has the previously unknown Galaxy Stellar showing up amongst the carrier’s more budget-minded smartphones for a $50 discount sometime between now and an August 19th expiry date. There’s little we can definitively attach to that starry-eyed name so far, although we have our hunches: first and foremost is that it’s the Jasper, the Snapdragon S4-touting spiritual successor to the Droid Charge. It might alternately be the even more mysterious SCH-i415, which just showed up at the FCC this weekend and could be a world-roaming sequel to the Stratosphere (SCH-i405) with CDMA, LTE and GSM all rolled into one. Whether the Galaxy Stellar is one of these two devices or something entirely off of the map, there’s a strong indication between this, Sprint’s mystery SPH-L300 and the slightly more tangible Galaxy Reverb that Samsung will leave no CDMA! corner unturned in the near future.

The next time you’re in Florida for a sporting event, your LTE connection could be provided by a COW, Verizon’s portable cell phone tower on wheels.
The carrier’s first 4G COW was delivered to Pembroke Pines and will be used at major public events throughout the state of Florida. The mobile cell tower lives up to it acronym. It weighs 24,000 pounds, measures 1,080 inches with its antenna extended, is powered by super-sized generators and can provide supplemental phone and data coverage for thousands of Verizon customers.
