Samsung Is The World’s Largest Smartphone Manufacturer By A Long Shot

In the case of smartphone makers, a rising tide does not lift all boats equally.
According to estimates from Canaccord Genuity, Samsung has shot further ahead of the pack as the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, shipping 56.3 million units in the third quarter.
Apple is in an increasingly distant, but still formidable, second place.
Apple’s consolation is that it still takes a larger share of industry profits, despite shipping approximately half as many units as Samsung.
The rest of the industry is grouped around five to nine million quarterly smartphone shipments.
One notable exception is Nokia, which only sold 2.9 million Windows-powered Lumia phones in the quarter. Lumia sales were ravaged after Microsoft announced that current Lumia owners would not get a full upgrade to Windows Phone 8. With Windows Phone 8 now launched, Nokia needs to see significant growth in sales if the one-time large! st manuf acturer of smartphones is to halt its tailspin.
Two other manufacturers to watch are Chinese up-and-comers Huawei and ZTE, which have catapulted from nowhere to 7.6 and 6.8 million smartphone shipments last quarter, respectively. The companies specialize in low-cost smartphones and could make a huge splash in the market with the heft of the Chinese government’s support. Those close ties, however, have drawn scrutiny from regulators in some markets.

Mobile web usage doubling every year, Nokia leads the way
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/07/statcounter-mobile-web-usage-doubling-every-year-nokia-leads-t/
We already knew that Nokia sits atop the world’s market when it comes to shipments and market share. As it turns out, though, the Finnish manufacturer leads the way in terms of mobile web browsing, too. That’s according to the latest report from StatCounter, which found that Nokia handsets account for about 40 percent of the world’s mobile browsing, followed by Apple, at around 29 percent. Coming in at a relatively distant third is Samsung, with an approximately 14 percent share. Android OEMs as a whole, however, account for a little under 25 percent of the world’s mobile browsing, while RIM came in at just 8.3 percent (thought it still ranks second in the UK, behind Apple). Overall, global mobile web usage has just about doubled every year since 2009, which is both crazy and not crazy. For more numbers and insight, check out the full PR after the break.

Kenko Tokina 400mm lens for Micro Four Thirds and Sony NEX hits Japan tomorrow

Looking for a zoom booster to flesh out your NEX or MFT kit? Then take a highly magnified gander at Kenko Tokina’s 400mm f/8 mirror lens, which now comes with both E- and T-mounts to complement the manufacturer’s existing SLR-compatible range. So long as you don’t mind the light-sapping aperture and manual focus, you’ll be able pick one up in Japan tomorrow for a price that should soon become apparent. Just bear in mind that other new MFT options from Tamron and Astrodesign are likely on their way too.
[Thanks, Tibor]

In Case You Needed More Proof Android Is Walloping iOS (AAPL, GOOG, RIMM)
Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/comscore-mobile-subscriber-market-share-2011-12
ComScore’s three-month report on mobile subscribers (ending in November) is out.
The results: Samsung is the number one phone manufacturer in the U.S. and Android is still the top mobile OS.
Apple did see its smartphone market share grow a bit, from 27.3% to 28.7% in the last three months. But Google’s Android platform is still crushing it with 46.9% of the smartphone market in the U.S.
RIM’s BlackBerry OS continues to flail, dropping to 16.6% of the market from 19.7% three months ago. Windows Phone is treading water with about 5% of the market.
Here’s the chart:

When it comes to hardware manufacturers, Samsung now has more than a quarter of the market in all mobile phones, including non-smartphones. Apple made a nice jump in the last three months, with the iPhone now accounting for 11.2% of the mobile phones in the U.S.
Here’s the manufacturer breakdown:

Keeping the ‘app’ out of Apple’s TV
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/04/switched-on-keeping-the-app-out-of-apples-tv/
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
Rumors continue to heat up that Apple will enter the television market next year, stepping up its Apple TV “hobby” into a greater revenue-generating vocation. The company would clearly like to repeat the kind of rousing success it has seen in smartphones. There, it entered a market at least as crowded and competitive as that for televisions whereas most of its Windows rivals have barely been able to eke out a few models with nominal share.
Indeed, the challenge is not as much about competition as commoditization. At first glance, this would be a curious time for Apple to enter the TV space. The HD and flat-panel transitions on which premium manufacturer brands and retailers once feasted has long passed. “Flat-panel TV” and “HDTV” are now just “TV.” And prices for smaller sets are settling into a range familiar to those who remember what they cost back in the heyday of CRTs.
What’s different, though, is that the state of the smart TV market looks strikingly like the smartphone market did before Apple’s entrance. The market essentially has “feature TVs” that present a few popular canned services (YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, etc.) and “smart TVs” that are a fractured mixture of homegrown offerings (from companies such as Panasonic, Samsung, LG and Toshiba) and an experience-challenged licensed OS (Android from Sony and Vizio).
The company has clung to the idea of TV as a passive experience.
