Location-based marketing sees a big increase in use

Restaurants around the world are seeing the value in digital marketing, especially programs that can increase customer loyalty and help establishments get the word out among like-minded diners.

In a survey, Hospitality Technology asked US executives overseeing restaurants around the world about a variety of social and loyalty marketing tactics, and found that every single one of these tactics had seen an increase in use among restaurants between 2012 and 2013. Nearly nine out of 10 restaurants used social media outreach this year—the most common tactic by a wide margin—up from 77% in 2012.

Unsurprisingly, the greatest percentage of social-savvy restaurants used Facebook (94%) this year, followed by Twitter (77%) and Yelp (53%). Nearly half also used YouTube. foursquare, used by 42% of restaurants, seemed like it could be leveraged more widely, given its role as a way for users to broadcast their latest check-ins, most often at stores and restaurants. Pinterest saw among the biggest bumps in usage, rising from 17% in 2012 to 28% in 2013.

Among the more general marketing strategies, restaurants also increased their use of daily deals and loyalty programs. And location-based marketing made among the biggest leaps. Sixteen percent of restaurants used the tactic last year, and this year that figure rose to 27%.

Mobile is giving location-based marketing a major boost, and it has a special value for restaurants, offering opportunities to reach mobile users as they’re scouring the streets—and their locati! on-enabled apps—for their next meal.

Both mobile sites and apps saw increased usage among restaurants this year: More than half of respondents had a mobile site, and nearly one out of three had a mobile app.

Menus topped the list as the most common feature available on restaurant apps. A restaurant search feature with location-based GPS was also used by 65% of restaurants with apps—presumably mostly chain restaurants that would have locations in many different places.

Offering nutritional information, integrating with users’ social media sites and ordering food via restaurant apps were also popular mobile app features.

IRI-Store-Marketing-Tactics-Influence-Brand-Decisions-Aug2013More than half of consumers decide on which products they’ll buy at the grocery store before they leave their homes, according to new data released by Information Resources Inc. (IRI). However, the survey results indicate that in-store marketing tactics still sway some. 48% of respondents indicate that shopper loyalty card discounts influence their final brand decisions, while 44% say the same about in-store circulars.

However, as search is second only to email as the most popular smartphone task, there is certainly value in using mobile for customer acquisition and awareness.

The survey also asked respondents which mobile marketing tactics they use.

Reflecting the fact that social media is a hugely popular activity on smartphone, 66% of marketers said they invest in social mobile advertising.

Display was the second most popular activity (44%) followed by mobile web landing pages with promotions and location-targeted advertising (both 37%).

Interestingly, only 22% said they invest in mobile paid search, which suggests advertisers are missing the opportunity presented by this channel. We’ve seen numerous surveys which show that although mobile search spend is increasing rapidly, it’s still a relatively untapped area for marketers.

For example, data from Marin Software revealed that mobile devices accounted for 13% of search spend in June 2012, yet took a 20% share of clicks.

This is despite the fact that separate surveys shows that search spend increased 250% in Q1 and 333% in Q2 2012 compared with the same periods in 2011.

KPIs

Forrester also asked respondents what KPIs they use to assess their mobile marketing initiatives.

The most common answer was web traffic and visitors (63%), followed by CTR (58%), brand awareness (54%) and revenue (44%). 

The report takes this as further evidence that too many mobile advertisers are using desktop marketing tactics and haven’t yet adapted to the opportunities presented by mobile.

It recommends that marketers use mobile to deliver highly contextual, relevant information that directly engage individual consumers.

A new definition of “digital” – the collection of habits and expectations of modern users

By defining “digital” as not the technology, device, or channel, but rather the habits and expectations of modern users, we are able to make practical decisions about which marketing tactics, technologies, devices, and channels to use to match these users’ habits and expectations.  If you know their habit is to search, then you wouldn’t blow your whole budget on TV ads and have nothing for them to find online when they search. if you believe they expect to be able to find information from their iPhones, then you wouldn’t make your whole site high bandwidth, flashy, and Flash because they wont be able to view it at all.
