Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/finally-facebook-will-show-ads-to-its-425-million-mobile-users-2012-2

facebook phoneFacebook had more than 425 million mobile users in December. So far, it makes zero money from those people.

That’ll change soon.

Today Faceobok announced that a new ad unit – called Reach Generator – will take posts from brand pages and stick them in users news feeds on the desktop AND on mobile.

Consider one big hole in Facebook’s business closed.

Intel Creates $100 Million Fund To Make Your Car Smarter (INTC)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-creates-100-million-fund-to-make-your-car-smarter-2012-2

Ferrari F12berlinetta CarIntel Capital announced today a $100 million fund devoted to cars.

So what’s a chip company doing betting on technology in cars?

Intel estimates that by 2014, cars will be one of the top three fastest-growing markets for connected devices and Internet content. That eventually gives Intel an opportunity to put more of its chips in a whole new place: cars.

As an Intel manager put it in the press release announcing the fund: “The car is the ultimate mobile device.”

The Intel Capital Connected Car Fund will invest in technologies such as advanced driver assistance systems, speech recognition, gesture recognition, and eye tracking.

But there’s no mention of self-driving cars just yet. That is all Google for now.

The 2012 Academy Awards In Charts And Data

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/the-oscars-for-quants-the-2012-academy-awards-in-charts-and-data-2012-2

Sure, The Artist did well at the Academy Awards. But what does that really mean, statistically?

As usual, our friends at AddThis, a company that provides social media sharing tools for web publishers, tracked their network of 11 million sites and 1.2 billion unique users per month to find out which Oscar events really drove chatter among consumers.

The data show that the real Oscar winners were the iPad, Pinterest, Sacha Baron Cohen and Twitter. Losers included Ryan Seacrest, Facebook and Billy Crystal.

This was the background chatter in the weeks prior to the Oscars. Note that ‘Hugo’ dominates.

Demian Bichir peaked when he was nominated for a SAG award for ‘Better Life.’ But interest faded. More people were interested in George Clooney than Jean Dujardin of ‘The Artist’ in the week before the Oscars.

Prior to the show, the people’s choice for Best Actress was Viola Davis, not Meryl Streep.

A Leak From The USA TODAY Shows How The Kindle Fire Is Blowing Away Other Android Tablets (AMZN, APPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/a-leak-from-the-usa-today-shows-how-the-kindle-fire-is-blowing-away-other-android-tablets-2012-2

Here’s an interesting look at how the platform wars are playing out across smartphones and tablets.

GeekWire landed an internal slide from USA Today that lists how many times its application has been downloaded. USA Today has a wider, more geographically diverse readership than most other newspapers, giving us insights into the ecosystem that we might not get from the typical measurement companies.

If USA Today’s internal statistics are any indication, the Kindle Fire is blowing other Android tablets out of the water. The slide shows 260,000 downloads of its app for Kindle Fire compared with only 130,000 for other Android tablets. That’s a two-to-one ratio.

The Kindle Fire still trails the iPad by some ~2.6 million downloads, but that’s unsurprising. What’s more impressive is how much headway the Kindle Fire has made in the short time since its release.

Further, you can see that the iPhone app is still beating the Android app in downloads. And Windows Phone has a lot of work to do.

Facebook Revenues Are Decelerating

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-facebook-revenues-are-decelerating-2012-2

Facebook revenues are decelerating. That is the reason why we don’t think the company is actually worth $100 billion. It’s more like $75 billion, and that’s if you’re optimistic.

Yikes! Oracle Issues Emergency Fix For A Big Fat Security Problem (ORCL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/yikes-oracle-issues-emergency-fix-for-a-big-fat-security-problem-2012-1

larryellison oracle tbi

Oracle today warned customers that they need to fix a major hole in its flagship database or risk downtime and hacker attacks, reports Infoworld.

In a weird twist of events, the hole was actually found by Infoworld, a news site that covers the tech industry. Oracle even gave the publication a public credit for finding and reporting the hole — and waiting to publish the story until Oracle could issue a patch, which it did today.

The flaw had to do with time stamp technology that acts like an internal clock. This clock is the key to keeping data synchronized and safe. When multiple databases are linked together the clock could be manipulated to be inaccurate. This is one of those critical systems that was difficult to fix and affected a long list of Oracle’s products.

The critical patch sent out today fixes a whole bunch of other flaws, too. Some 78 holes will be patched across all of Oracle’s major product families.

Inforworld contends that Oracle executives knew about the time stamp problem and not only downplayed it, but issued a workaround fix that could have caused customers even more headaches and money. Oracle seems to have gotten its act together and really fixed the security flaw this time, Infoworld says.

Microsoft’s Share Of The Search Market Is Finally Bigger Than Yahoo’s (MSFT, GOOG, YHOO)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-search-market-2012-1

Microsoft has poured billions of dollars into its search engine, and this is what it has to show for it.

It is now the second largest search engine in the U.S., just edging past Yahoo for the first time in December, according to the latest comScore data. That’s nice and all, but Microsoft is in a partnership with Yahoo, so it probably doesn’t want to be taking share from Yahoo.

It really wants to be taking share from Google. That’s not happening. The good news from Microsoft’s perspective is that Google’s search share has been stuck around 65% for years now.
