CHART OF THE DAY: Barack Obama’s Monster Online Advertising Campaign

comScore has a new report out about the state of web properties. Most of it is stuff we’ve covered in the past. Google dominates search, Facebook is a popular site, etc.

In the middle of the report, this chart really jumped out at us. It compares Barack Obama’s online display ads to Mitt Romney’s display ads. The gap between the two is stunning. We’re not going to say anything about the correlation between online spending and winning an election, we just can’t believe the gap between the two candidates.

Google's Search Results Page Looks Different NowGoogle search results are like the old beat up recliner of the internet. Your butt’s always there, and if anything changes, you notice. Well, Google changed the way its search results look. It’s a relatively small change, but you’re going to notice.

The biggest difference is that the bar along the left hand side of your searches is gone. This is where you used to break your search down into News, or whatever else. That function is now at the top of your results, along with the also relocated Search Tools. Search Tools moving means you don’t have those two butt ugly calendars with custom dates in your line of sight, which is a plus. This change has been live a day or two, and should only be a negative if you’re running a ton of searches (it’s been killing me).

Google is also featuring information from Google’s Knowledge Graph for popular searches, like “barack obama”, “mitt romney”, and “presidential election”, for example. So! Google’s a little prettier, and it’s rearranged the furniture a bit. Seems like a nice, small change, right? [BuzzFeed]

Obama Gets A Hurricane Sandy Bump, Pulls Back Into A Tie With Mitt Romney

Bolstered by his response to Hurricane Sandy, President Barack Obama gained one point to pull back into a tie with Mitt Romney in the latest Washington Post/ABC News tracking poll.

According to the survey, 78 percent of likely voters polled had positive views of the way that the president has handled the “super storm” – a number that includes two-thirds of Romney’s supporters. In contrast, just 44 percent of those surveyed had a net positive view of how the Republican candidate responded to the storm.

It is too early to tell, however, if that support for Obama will affect his overall standing in the race. The results of the four-day tracking survey include only one night of interviews with voters after the storm hit, so we will have to wait for Thursday and Friday’s results to see if the storm has any real effect on the dynamics of the presidential race. 

Overall, Obama and Romney are tied, 49% to 49%, among likely voters. Those numbers are consistent with the rest of the poll’s results, which have shown the race between one point since daily tracking began on October 18.

Here’s The Truth About That Gallup Poll That Shows A Huge Lead For Mitt Romney

Worried Obama fans will be happy to read Nate Silver’s latest post about Gallup, the polling firm that has Mitt Romney with a shocking 7 point lead among likely voters.

Silver’s post is broken down into two parts. The first is a technical discussion of how Gallup fits into his own model (which still gives Obama a 70% chance of winning the election). The second part talks about Gallup’s reliability.

The basic gist is two fold. One, when Gallup is far apart form other polls, Gallup is usually wrong. The second is that Gallup’s history of Presidential tracking is very odd, and prone to huge swings that don’t show up in the results of other pollsters.

Here are a few examples he cites:

  • In 2008, Gallup put Obama 11 points ahead of McCain on election eve. Other polls averaged an Obama lead of 7 points. The other polls were correct.
  • In 2000, Gallup put George W. Bush a stunning 16 points ahead of Al Gore in August.
  • Then later in 2000, in September, it put Al Gore up by 10 points.
  • Then in October 2000, George W. Bush was back up by 13 points. No other pollster had swings remotely this wild.
  • In 1996 at one point, Bill Clinton was up by 25 points over Bob Dole. And that was just 4 days apart from Clinton’s 9-point lead. A ridiculous swing.

Bottom line: Gallup swings wildly and it frequently has results not in line with other pollsters.

Social Media Analysis Reveals Just How Badly Mitt Romney Trounced Obama Last Night

Taykey, an advertising company that monitors social media volume and tone, passed along some of the most compelling graphs that show just how significantly Mitt Romney trounced Barack Obama in last night’s debate — at least in a social-media context.

The graphs measure volume — or how many tweets are going out about a candidate — and sentiment, which gauges how positive the tweets are. 

Here’s how Obama fared over the course of the evening:

That’s a pretty significant difference, only enunciated more by this chart laying one graph over the other.

Pay attention especially to sentiment, where it’s clear that people weren’t just talking about Romney the whole time — they were also saying better things about him, too:

Romney’s 47% Video Has Been Viewed 3 Times As Often As His Convention Speech

Here’s an amazing chart from Pew Research, which is being tweeted around by Charley Warzel of AdWeek, Andrew Kaczynski of Buzzfeed, and others.

It shows the number of times different convention-related videos have been viewed on YouTube.

The highlights:

  • Barack Obama’s convention speech has been viewed 5 times as many times as Mitt Romney’s convention speech.
  • Mitt Romney’s “47%” video has been viewed 2 million times more than his convention speech.
  • Clint Eastwood’s convention speech has been viewed 2 million times more than Mitt Romney’s convention speech
  • Michelle Obama’s convention speech has been viewed 3-times as many times as Romney’s convention speech–and 6-times as often as Ann Romney’s

Mitt Romney Twitter Fraud – 117k Followers On A Weekend Day

The first graph shows search interest in “mitt romney” over the period of June 25 – July 24, 2012. There is no discernible lift in interest around July 21, according to Google Insights for Search 

The second chart below was generated by Twitter Counter and shows a dramatic increase of nearly 117,000 followers in 1 day, when the average number of adds per day over the same period was usually a steady 7,800 per day.

Something is not kosher.  The spike happened on a Saturday, July 21. Saturdays and Sundays are usually the worst days to tweet according to a study by FastCompany.

Many of the followers listed on Romney’s twitter page have ZERO tweets, ZERO followers, etc. (see screen shot)

See at the bottom an example of the proliferation of “service” which help users buy thousands of followers at a time.
