Samsung printer hack could let the wrong ones in

Typically, when we think of hacks, our minds conjure images of compromised security systems, personal computers or server farms, but printers? According to Neil Smith, a researcher from the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team, unauthorized access to those devices could be a very real threat — if you happen to own a Samsung model. Discovered and submitted to the agency this past Monday, the exploit unearthed by Smith takes advantage of an “SNMP backdoor” : an internet protocol that allows for remote network administrative control without authentication. The vulnerability — which would give hackers access to data sent to the printer, as well as control over it (think: ceaseless printing!) — affects most units released before November of this year. For its part, Samsung’s promised a patch will be forthcoming. But, in the meantime, if you want to avoid exposing any personal data or the possibility of a seemingly possessed printer, it’s best you steer clear of rogue WiFi connections.

Stephen Colbert Argues That The Chick-Fil-A Controversy Is Really A Brilliant Business Strategy

Stephen Colbert discovered the true take-away from the Chick-Fil-A controversy when company president Dan Cathy “came out of the tolerance closet.” On a segment of The Colbert Report Monday, Colbert argued that it’s a brilliant new business strategy.

“I think Chick-Fil-A has stumbled on a new strategy to help struggling businesses in this down economy,” Colbert said. “Just associate your product with a divisive political position and just wait for the cash to roll in.”

Colbert added: “Hey, La-Z-Boy, why not run ads that say, ‘You know who’s lazy? Mexicans.'”

Mad Men The Pitch AMC Ratings 2012

Early last week, we chronicled how AMC’s advertising competition show, The Pitch, had some seriously awful ratings.

The low ratings prompted AMC to move The Pitch from its Monday time slot to Sundays, following AMC’s other advertising show, Mad Men.

It’s hard to say the move didn’t work—viewership has doubled— but a new trend is emerging: Mad Men is struggling.

The most recent episode, which aired on Sunday, had just under two million viewers or one-third less viewers for when Mad Men first aired a one-hour episode this season on March 25. (It’s an over 45% drop-off from the 3.535 million viewers Mad Men claimed during its two-hour premier in March.)

It should be noted Mad Men debuted with record ratings and is still beating last season’s average. Although Netflix took credit for an added million viewers, i.e. the bulk of the difference between the record premiere and last season’s average.

We’ve mentioned it a few times before, but advertising shows traditionally do not work.

Despite not having a single positive trend in ratings since the season began, Mad Men will fare a lot better than The Pitch, which has failed to cross the 0.1 threshold from Nielsen since its debut while being described as an oversimplification, outdated and phantasmagoricaly awful from critics.

AT&T Is Going To Try To Blow Away Amazon’s Cloud (AMZN, T)

There’s already no shortage of companies with their own “clouds” trying to blow up Amazon’s popular web services.

Now AT&T will too.

On Monday AT&T announced  AT&T Cloud Architect, which it describes as “a developer-centric cloud platform providing storage and infrastructure as-a-service.” Sound familiar? It should. That’s what Amazon’s Web Services does, as does Microsoft Azure, IBM’s SmartCloud, Red Hat’s OpenShift and countless others.

AT&T has promised that it’s new cloud will support multiple flavors of Linux (CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat) as well as Windows Server.

AT&T was vague as to when its cloud would be available, saying that it would be turned on sometime in the next few weeks, reports Ars Technica.

The news is significant for another reason. AT&T is choosing OpenStack to build its cloud, making it the first carrier to join the OpenStack consortium. OpenStack is an open-source cloud architecture project based on a collaboration between NASA and hosting company Rackspace. It’s not the only open source cloud architecture, but it is the one that seems to be winning the most support with the most important participants.

Having the cloud industry settle on one architecture is good for enterprise customers. It ensures they won’t get stuck with one cloud vendor. They can move their applications more easily between multiple clouds built with the same technology.

That’s the heart of the complaint thrown at Amazon by competitors like Rackspace. They say Amazon’s proprietary technology makes it hard for customers to move.

The Smartphone Is Becoming A Goliath In The Retail Industry

A study by the Times finds many retailers–including major ones like Best Buy, Nordstrom and Amazon–offer the most promotional deals for smartphones, which generate millions, if not billions, in revenue.

Amazon, for example, will make $5.37 billion in sales through mobile devices by year’s end, according to a recent survey by Internet Retailer.

Flash deal and group-buying sites are also jumping on board with mobile-exclusive deals of their own. Gilt Groupe, for example, started offering special holiday promotions on Friday, November 25 at 6 a.m.

Surprisingly, it’s bricks-and-mortar stores who will be making the biggest mobile-deal push. One of the main reasons is because they must compete against the growing consumer trend of using price comparison apps, says Time Moneyland’s Brad Turtle. These apps let you scan an item, compare retailers’ prices and read product reviews, which have become increasingly popular in the last year.

What’s funny, though, is how many retail stores started arming their salespeople with the same equipment. Reuters reports that companies like Lowe’s, Best Buy and Toys R Us gave their people smartphones of their own to research products, check rival’s prices and even make purchases.

More than 40 percent of retailers now have a policy of competing against lower online prices through mobile phones, according to the research firm RSR.

Lowe’s alone is using over 42,000 Apple iPhones and distributing them to 1,700 of their stores.

With the equipment, employees can engage customers more effectively by using iPhones to track down the same information consumers are tracking. They’ll also be able to quickly see if products are in stock, or still available on the website or at another nearby store.

Some companies are also allowing their employees to either match or beat prices that a consumer finds somewhere else on their phone—good news for the consumer.

Free Shipping On The Web Isn’t So ‘Free’ Anymore

It’s no surprise why online shopping is so popular.

“You get the item quickly, you don’t pay for shipping, you often receive better prices, and you don’t have to leave your house,” said Andrew Schrage, founder of Money Crashers.

Perhaps in response to shoppers like Schrage, businesses have been giving away free shipping with a vengeance.

Some 93 percent of stores will offer at least one free shipping deal this year, which means a six percent increase from last year. Meanwhile 30 percent of store sites will offer free shipping on Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation.

Experts like Kit Yarrow, a professor of psychology and marketing at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Calif., told Smart Money that free shipping has become an expectation. However, things don’t always don’t always pan out for consumers.

Retailers may raise the price of their products to make up for shipping costs or bar consumers from using coupons. She also warns shoppers to consider the overall package, including whether or not you can combine discounts.

Besides analyzing the overall deal, Schrage advises shoppers to stick to Web-based companies when shopping online.

“Online sites like Amazon almost ALWAYS have as cheap, and usually cheaper, prices than these retailers who also provide free shipping,” he said.

He points out that companies like Amazon even offer two-day shipping for free, and maintain great return policies that prove to be better than those of bricks-and-mortar stores.

From time to time Schrage admits you will seen an online site offer a higher retail price with free shipping. But stay away—you can score a better deal.

I had been eagerly awaiting the start of the Patriots season since their heartbreaking loss at the start of the year. The first Monday night game in September I got to see my favorite team back in action, along with my favorite player. What I wasn’t expecting was to see Tom Brady off the field as well, advertising footwear during one of the game’s commercial breaks.

I loved the commercial, and not just because it made walking around aimlessly look incredibly cool. It brought a new dimension to a brand that I remember seeing only on girls walking around campus in the winter. Forgetting their origin as Australian surfers’ footwear, Uggs are now so tied to their classic boot look for the female demographic that I can’t imagine them breaking into the male market significantly.

Well after a month of walking around Boston seeing Brady’s image posted on buildings (and I’ve heard they’re in other cities, as well) I wondered what kind of boost the brand is getting from the campaign.

While the trend looks the same, with the traffic starting to pick up for the holiday season, uggsaustralia.com has a whopping 237,887 more unique visitors than it did in September last year, a 48% increase. There has been an overall increase in traffic year over year, but that difference was only 23% in July before the ad campaign started.

Also, more people online seem to be going to the site. The trend has steadily been on the rise, with some significant peaks since the commercial started airing in September.

The most important question, though, is what kind of effect is Brady having on driving the male demographic to the site? There isn’t a major increase during September, but it’s up 2% year over year in the male demographic. The beauty of the campaign is it may be targeting females just as much to get the shoes for their guys as gifts during the upcoming holiday season.

After all this, it’s still hard to tell if the campaign is having a significant effect—the next few months will give us a better idea.

But I think I might get a pair. If Tom wears them they must be cool, right?
