Donald Trump Is Attacking Brian Williams In Another Twitter Meltdown (CMCSA)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-attacking-brian-williams-on-twitter-2012-11

Donald Trump wasn’t satisfied with just making a clown of himself last night on Twitter.

He’s continuing today, attacking NBC’s star newsman Brian Williams.

Last night Williams talked about Trump’s tweets on air and said he had “driven well past the last exit to relevance and veered into something closer to irresponsible.”

This morning, Trump is firing back as only he can, saying, “Brian–Thanks dummy–I picked up 70,000 twitter followers yesterday alone.” And, “Brian Williams was never a smart guy but always passes himself off as such. People will learn the truth!”

Here’s the full tweet-rant, read from the bottom up.

NBC Spoiled Missy Franklin’s Tape-Delayed Gold Medal Race Just Moments Before Airing The Race

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/video-nbc-spoiled-missy-franklins-tape-delayed-gold-medal-2012-7

NBC has received plenty of heat and criticism for their decisions to tape-delay a number of the more popular Olympic events. But they aren’t helping their own case when they spoil their own coverage with a promo for another show.

That’s what happened tonight when NBC was getting set to show the women’s 100 meter backstroke, an event Franklin won (will win?). The network went to commercial with a view of Franklin in the pool and the teaser “coming up, how good can Missy Franklin be tonight? The finals of the 100-back coming up.”

And from the “can’t make it up department,” NBC then showed a promo for “The Today Show” centered around Franklin celebrating her gold medal with her parents. The promo even included a shot of Franklin on the medal stand with her medal.

Gee, I wonder if she is going to win?!? Here’s the video…

MSNBC.com Is Now NBCNews.com

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/msnbccom-is-now-nbcnewscom-2012-7

nbc news

Msnbc.com renamed itself NBCNews.com after Comcast bought out Microsoft’s share of it for a reported $300 million.

The sale, which had been expected for weeks, ends the partnership of the internet giant and NBC, which stretches back to the mid 1990s. The sale price was not disclosed, but The New York Times reported it was $300 million.

“When msnbc.com launched 16 years ago, it set the standard for how people consume news online — creating trends and leading the marketplace,” said NBC News President Steve Capus. “Today, NBC News enters a new phase of its history better positioned to compete and grow in a digital environment, as well as deliver consumers and clients a multi-platform news experience unlike anything else in the industry.”

Capus also thanked Microsoft “for everything they’ve done for this partnership and for helping us build these properties into what they are today.”

The site’s editor in chief, Jennifer Sizemore, delivered the news in a message to readers.

“While our name is changing, our commitment is not. In fact, in the weeks and months ahead, we’ll be bringing you more of what you love today, and NBCNews.com will stay true to its mandate of delivering the news you need with the innovative spirit you’ve come to expect across all of our digital platforms.”

NBC NewsMicrosoft relinquished its stake in the cable news channel MSNBC in 2005, and the channel has branded itself as an outlet for left-leaning political coverage and analysis. But because of MSN and NBC’s joint ownership of the website, the online news site has not reflected the voice of the cable channel.

Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, now becomes the full owner of msnbc.com, and the purchase signals a major investment in the future of the news division. People familiar with the deal told the Times that some of the purchase price came from the joint venture’s past profits.

Visitors who typed in msnbc.com on Monday morning were immediately redirected to the new site.

Here is the video (via NBC Sports) and the subsequent zingers from both US Open champion Webb Simpson and Bob Costas…

YouTube and NBC Will Livestream the Entire Summer 2012 Olympics For FreeFor the first time ever, you’ll be able to watch every single olympic event live. NBC has teamed up with YouTube to livestream more than 3000 hours of coverage from the London 2012 Olympics for free. First the Super Bowl was streamed online and now this!

The Olympics will be streamed live on NBCOlympics.com using YouTube’s infrastructure. The games won’t actually be streamed on YouTube, and given the volume of people who will be trying to watch, it’s a good thing YouTube is tackling the project.

This is a sports junky’s dream. Every four years everyone probably watches popular Olympic events like the 100-meter dash live because the networks actually broadcast them on TV. But if you wanted to catch the live cycling action down at the London velodrome, you were out of luck until now. [NBC via Time]

A Leak From The USA TODAY Shows How The Kindle Fire Is Blowing Away Other Android Tablets (AMZN, APPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/a-leak-from-the-usa-today-shows-how-the-kindle-fire-is-blowing-away-other-android-tablets-2012-2

Here’s an interesting look at how the platform wars are playing out across smartphones and tablets.

GeekWire landed an internal slide from USA Today that lists how many times its application has been downloaded. USA Today has a wider, more geographically diverse readership than most other newspapers, giving us insights into the ecosystem that we might not get from the typical measurement companies.

If USA Today’s internal statistics are any indication, the Kindle Fire is blowing other Android tablets out of the water. The slide shows 260,000 downloads of its app for Kindle Fire compared with only 130,000 for other Android tablets. That’s a two-to-one ratio.

The Kindle Fire still trails the iPad by some ~2.6 million downloads, but that’s unsurprising. What’s more impressive is how much headway the Kindle Fire has made in the short time since its release.

Further, you can see that the iPhone app is still beating the Android app in downloads. And Windows Phone has a lot of work to do.

This Bakery Had To Make 102,000 Cupcakes Because Of A Groupon Deal And Lost A Ton Of Money

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/london-baker-makes-102000-cupcakes-groupon-deal-2011-11

need a cake bakery

A London bakery recently experienced the worst-case scenario of offering a Groupon for a small business, and it cost the owner thousands (via NBC Chicago).

Need a Cake bakery owner Rachel Brown decided to put up a 75% discount on a dozen cupcakes on the site, which dropped the price down to $10 from $40.

Apparently, people really love getting cupcakes cheap, because she was rushed by throngs of customers in a cupcake frenzy. 8,500 people signed up, and her crew of eight had to make 102,000 cupcakes to meet the orders.

Brown lost $3 per batch because she had to hire 25 extra workers to help, and she ended up losing $20,000 because of it, which a ton for a small biz. It wiped out her profits for the year, reports the Daily Mail.

“Without doubt, it was my worst ever business decision,” she told the BBC. “We had thousands of orders pouring in that really we hadn’t expected to have. A much larger company would have difficulty coping.”

This is just the latest in Groupon small business horror stories. A story popped up in September about a Portland cafe losing $8,000 because of a Groupon, which prompted a personal letter from founder and CEO Andrew Mason.

It brings up the always-present question about the daily deals site: does Groupon suck for small businesses?

Well, it looks like most small businesses think so. An overwhelming majority of 70% hate Groupon, if the latest survey from iContact is to be believed.

As for Brown and her bakery, the experience may have cost her 20 grand, but what about all the exposure she’s getting for her store? Great, right? It doesn’t hurt, but it probably wasn’t worth the cost.

Small businesses like this bakery thrive on relationships with their local customers, not crowds of outsiders coming in to snatch up a free lunch.

Getting new customers is great, but in this case, the bakery rewarded the wrong customers. Those 8,500 people that rushed for the Groupon probably won’t be coming back to pay for the same cupcakes at quadruple the price.

Only those the store has nurtured relationships with for a long time (in Brown’s case, 25 years), should be the ones rewarded. They’re the ones that keep coming back for more.
