This Hot New York Startup Looks An Awful Lot Like eBay After Six Years

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-ebay-vs-etsy-2012-5

There’s a reason people call Etsy the next eBay. Six years after their founding, both companies are showing eerily similar growth curves. Admittedly, Etsy is tackling a smaller slice of online retail than eBay, but that didn’t bother the investors who valued the company at an estimated $688 million in its latest round of funding.

New York Times sees higher circulation numbers, digital paywall smiles knowingly

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/01/new-york-times-higher-circulation-digital/

04 05 10nytapp New York Times sees higher circulation numbers, digital paywall smiles knowingly

Given how aggressively The New York Times pushes its digital packages — we’ve long since dropped our subscription yet are still bombarded with offers — you’d hope the paper was at least seeing some results. Well, never fear: it is. A report by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) found that the Times has seen a healthy increase in circulation, with the Sunday edition selling 2,003,247 copies (up 50 percent from last year) and the weekday editions racking in an average of 1,586,757 (up 73 percent). The ABC attributes much of this gain to the NYT’s addition of digital access to paper subscriptions, and we’re sure the paywall, which limits non-subscribers to just ten free articles a month, has something to do with it, too.

The Most Remarkable Instagram Chart You’ll See

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-increase-in-downloads-and-twitter-shares-2012-4

This chart plots both how many times Instagram has been downloaded, in gray, and how often it has been used to share photos over Twitter, in red.

Look at how, moving left to right, the red bars extend away from the gray bars.

Know what that means?

It means, in the words of the Distimo analyst who put together the chart, that “the average number of shares per users are increasing.”

That’s profound: The app isn’t just getting more popular, it is becoming a more important part of its users’ lives.

Google’s gunning for web spammers, bans us from mentioning Bieber

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/26/google-targets-seo-spam/

down with this sort of thing1 Googles gunning for web spammers, bans us from mentioning Bieber

Google’s changing its search algorithm to punish sites that emphasize search-engine optimization over quality. Mountain View’s data centers will exclude sites that offer no useful content, have articles written in keyword-sprinkled gibberish or only link to sites within a cluster. If the computers find it, the site’s pagerank will be demoted, with the company expecting to affect around three percent of all English language queries when it goes live later this week. The company isn’t providing more details (lest it help those trying to game the system), so just get all of those gratuitous Justin Bieber references out of your system before Friday, okay?

Google announces Brand Activate Initiative for online advertising, hopes to establish new standard

google Google announces Brand Activate Initiative for online advertising, hopes to establish new standard

When Google makes a new move in advertising, people are bound to take notice, and it’s made a fairly big one today. It’s announced what it’s dubbed the Brand Activate Initiative at the Ad Age Digital Conference today, something that initially consists of two new services for advertisers: Active View and Active GRP. The latter is a so-called gross rating point metric that’s modeled to some extent on TV advertising, while Active View is something that Google hopes will become a standard for all online advertising. In short, it measures both how long an ad remains on a person’s screen and how much of it is viewed — if at least 50 percent of it is viewable for at least one second it’s counted as an viewed impression. Both of those options are rolling out today, but they’re apparently just the beginning of the broader initiative. You can see Google itself explain it in the video after the break, and on its DoubleClick blog linked below.

Next Issue Media launches on Android, $15 a month for access to 32 magazines

next issue Next Issue Media launches on Android, $15 a month for access to 32 magazines
If you’ve taken issue with your usual choices for buying magazines on your tablet, be it pay-per-issue or per-subscription, you’re not alone. If you’ll recall, it was nearly a year ago that Next Issue Media launched the preliminary version of its “Hulu-meets-magazines” app on the Galaxy Tab, and it’s finally ready to release this physical newsstand alternative officially. After raking in a slew of deals last November, its Android 3.0 app is now available — users can fork over a monthly fee of $10 to access all of its monthly and bi-weekly content, while an extra five bucks adds in weekly content, essentially giving you access to every publication on offer. Singular subscriptions are also available for two to 10 bucks, and you’ll currently have a choice of 32 mags from the likes of Car and Driver to The New Yorker. Interestingly, TechCrunch notes that NIM plans to get the app over to iOS “soon” — it’ll surely be interesting to see how it competes with Apple’s own Newsstand. You’ll find more info at the via links below, and you can flip over to the source for details about a 30-day trial offer.

Creepy – Dynamically Targeting Display Ads Based on Items and Pages Viewed

The 3 business projectors I viewed yesterday on NewEgg.com and the one I added to my shopping cart to check the “special” price now appear in a display ad on news site The Guardian.

Where’s “the line?”  When will consumers rise up and say enough is enough and stop allowing advertisers to buy and sell their personal information without their permission for the sake of “targeting” them with more ads.

Flat-panel TV shipments to fall for the first time ever in 2012?

panasonic tv 2012 03 19 Flat panel TV shipments to fall for the first time ever in 2012?

The past fourteen or so years have been a great run for flat-panel TV sales, but according to IHS (formerly iSuppli), that run is finally going to turn in the down direction in 2012. The expected drop off is predicted to be five percent, which still leaves the total TVs sold in 2012 at 37.1 million, more than a few dollars for sure. The fact that last year saw a modest one percent raise is as good of an indicator as any that the good times are over. Of course this is but a single prediction from a single analyst firm and we’ll all have to wait until the year is over and earnings are announced to know anything for certain.

Western Union debuts WUPay digital platform, misses the point of convenience entirely

wu pay 1332447721 Western Union debuts WUPay digital platform, misses the point of convenience entirely

Modernization’s not for everyone — just take a look at Western Union. That 19th century institution’s finally getting its virtual act together, introducing a new digital payments platform today, dubbed WU Pay, that sadly does not involve laundering dough through the late, great ODB’s hip hop clan. No, this forward-facing system, built upon its eBillme acquisition, takes a backwards approach, eschewing direct payment options for something more circuitous. Customers that opt-in for the service at checkout from any number of partnered merchants, like Kmart or Sears, won’t have to link to their credit card accounts or even offer up any financial info. Instead, once the item is purchased, they’ll receive a bill via email that can then be paid online or at one of the company’s brick-and-mortar sites. Sound unnecessary to you? We sure agree. Now if only this innovation involved Marty McFly and Jason Alexander personally delivering those funds — that’s a service overhaul we can get behind. Check out the PR after the break.
