Following An Uproar Over Privacy, Microsoft Now Says The Next Xbox’s Kinect Motion Sensor Won’t Need To Be On For The Console To Work (MSFT)

Microsoft’s new video game console, the Xbox One, will not require users to keep the Kinect sensor plugged in for the system to work.

The news comes out of a Q&A session with the Xbox One’s chief product officer Marc Whitten on video game news site IGN. Whitten said:

…like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor.

When Microsoft first announced the Xbox One in May, it said the Kinect, which includes cameras and microphones that are always on and listening for commands, needed to be plugged in and switched on in order for the console to work. However, users would still have the option to disable the Kinect in the console’s settings menu.

But Microsoft still said the Kinect sensor had to be plugged in for the console to work, even if it was disabled, fueling concerns that the device could be used to spy into people’s living rooms. It now appears Microsoft has changed its mind and will allow you to use the Xbox One if the Kinect is unplugged from the console.

This isn’t the first 180 Microsoft has made since announcing the Xbox One. Originally, Microsoft said the console required an Internet connection to work in order to check whether or not users were playing pirated games. Microsoft also said it would allow game publishers to essentially “lock” a purchased game to one Xbox, making it difficult to trade in or buy used games. After a huge user backlash, Microsoft reversed both policies.

Apple is pitching media companies on a plan to allow viewers to skip advertisements while watching TV as part of its plan for an Apple TV, Jessica Lessin reports.

The ad-skipping technology from Apple would be part of a premium package for users.

To offset the lost viewership, Apple would compensate media companies for the skipped ads, says Lessin, a former Wall Street Journal reporter who is starting her own tech news site.

This seems like an audacious idea from Apple. eMarketer projects U.S. TV ad spending will be $66.35 billion this year. If Apple were to compensate for lost ad revenue, it could get pretty expensive pretty quickly.

Apple has been exploring the TV market for years now. It has reportedly been developing a full-blown television set, but nothing has happened yet. Lessin suggests Apple is more focused on making something happen in the TV market.

Creepy – Dynamically Targeting Display Ads Based on Items and Pages Viewed

The 3 business projectors I viewed yesterday on NewEgg.com and the one I added to my shopping cart to check the “special” price now appear in a display ad on news site The Guardian.

Where’s “the line?”  When will consumers rise up and say enough is enough and stop allowing advertisers to buy and sell their personal information without their permission for the sake of “targeting” them with more ads.

Yikes! Oracle Issues Emergency Fix For A Big Fat Security Problem (ORCL)

Oracle today warned customers that they need to fix a major hole in its flagship database or risk downtime and hacker attacks, reports Infoworld.

In a weird twist of events, the hole was actually found by Infoworld, a news site that covers the tech industry. Oracle even gave the publication a public credit for finding and reporting the hole — and waiting to publish the story until Oracle could issue a patch, which it did today.

The flaw had to do with time stamp technology that acts like an internal clock. This clock is the key to keeping data synchronized and safe. When multiple databases are linked together the clock could be manipulated to be inaccurate. This is one of those critical systems that was difficult to fix and affected a long list of Oracle’s products.

The critical patch sent out today fixes a whole bunch of other flaws, too. Some 78 holes will be patched across all of Oracle’s major product families.

Inforworld contends that Oracle executives knew about the time stamp problem and not only downplayed it, but issued a workaround fix that could have caused customers even more headaches and money. Oracle seems to have gotten its act together and really fixed the security flaw this time, Infoworld says.
